  1. 40" is basically a metre of snow. And that's without drifts. Epic.
  2. Try to imagine what the drifts will be like considering up to three feet of level snow is being forecast.
  3. Those amounts are nothing compared with what the NAM model was predicting:
  4. I'm assuming those maps have been released "early" (it's still the 31st) because the rainfall cut-off was at 9am this morning. Until 5pm today Melbourne had recorded 8.0mm of rain in January, but has received 25.8mm this evening thanks to a biblical downpour (which I got caught in). Looks like I've taken the weather with me from Queensland. Crowded House would be pleased.
  5. Has anyone else seen moving lights in the night sky? I saw five of them last night in Melbourne, like fairly bright stars but moving about randomly and with variable speed. I took a video but some of it's quite hard to see and it's taking an age to upload to YouTube. It lasted for at least 5-10 minutes before I went to get a curry - they were gone when I went back out about half an hour or so later.
  6. Bundaberg is also facing the brunt of Queensland's floods. The Burnett River there has reached record levels. Some pictures here from this afternoon:
  7. 119.4mm recorded in the last 14 hours, and 225.4mm in the last three days. So much for that exceptionally dry January. The Brisbane River is expected to flood through Monday and Tuesday with a crest of 2.6 metres, two metres below the January 2011 floods. Some parts of the city have already been flooded by creeks bursting their banks. We're also on tornado alert.
  8. A very unpleasant day here today: strong winds and unremitting torrential rain. There has been a tornado outbreak around Bundaberg, with one fatality confirmed so far (EDIT - caused by flooding not tornadoes). It's been raining with very little respite for 3-4 days now. Flood warnings are out in force.
  9. Ironically, Chicago has had very little snow this winter. I imagine it would have been even colder there had there been a significant cover on the ground.
  10. Irish bands only please! To stay on topic, I hope this particular Irish band provides many Thrills for all.
  11. Temperatures are looking marginal for some areas. The tension is too much de Burgh.
  12. You can never be too sure when you live in the west of the region. That's Westlife for you.
  13. First proper wet day here in Brisbane since I arrived two and a half weeks ago. Looks like the very dry January is about to get a lot less dry.
  14. Bananas by any chance? I'm glad I moved down from North Queensland when I did. The wet season was a long time coming this time round, but now it's really in full force.
  15. The radar shows that an area of decent precipitation has moved as far as the Irish Sea coast. Some people might end up with more than they expected...
  16. How is the snow cover holding up on Merseyside? I've seen some pictures from back home and there wasn't enough snow to cover all blades of grass - this to me is the cut-off point between a moderate fall and a significant one. Any snow is good snow of course, but I understand any frustration over missing out on what was close to being a real dumping. I see the snowy synoptics have reverted to type, affecting the east and barely making it across the Pennines (which despite their relatively low height seem to act like the Himalayas when it comes to snow from the east). Maybe those in the east of the region who moaned on Friday now have a slight inkling of what it is usually like to live in the west!
