  1. It's really noticeable here now. I was outside last night until after midnight and there were still reds and oranges to the north.
  2. I remember a massive thunderstorm in Brisbane saving England from defeat on the fifth day during the 1998/99 Ashes tour. The pictures were amazing - it was like night-time. Hard to believe there was a washed-out day in 1976. Which one was that?
  3. Weird weather in the Top End lately. The Dry arrived on schedule in Kununurra in April but then about a week ago the cloud built up, the humidity increased and there was a bit of rain (the first for a month and a half). Saturday felt as humid as it was in March, and when I was in Darwin the next day it felt just as sultry as it did when I was there in February! I'm back in Britain now though.
  4. I'd like to add a vote for 2002. The only thing remotely interesting I remember about that year was a warm, thundery spell which occurred when the Commonwealth Games were going on in Manchester. 2011 is saved thanks to that exceptional late autumn heatwave, otherwise it was a waste of warm synoptics (I think that April has been overrated, though obviously fascinating from a purely meteorological perspective). Of course even the second warmest year since 1659 couldn't stop all three summer months being below the 1659-present day average. A frustrating year. 2012 was at least interesting in its appallingness.
  5. To put this incredible spring into perspective, March was even colder than this year, April was the coldest on record and May was exceptionally cold at sub-10C. Even with the exceptionally cold start to spring this year, it would still take something like the coldest April on record plus one of the coldest ever Mays (or vice-versa) to beat Spring 1837.
  6. Not much to add to what's already been said. You've left a great legacy here. Congratulations on your new role and best of luck for the future. Do feel free to drop in again though!
  7. So provisionally ranked 4th out of 242. Very impressive.
  8. Highest daily CET so far this month is 6.9C on the 8th. The only March since 1772 I can find which betters this is 1837, which had a highest daily CET of 5.0C (and a monthly value of 2.3C). I reckon with downward corrections this month will beat 1962.
  9. Life is full of pain and suffering. Doesn't mean we shouldn't enjoy it when we get the chance.
  10. An exceptional month it has to be said. I've just seen some of the photos and even Liverpool's had decent snow in recent days. I could do with some of that snow where I am (where it's been stupidly hot).
  11. Wish I was at home for this one - an impressive March CET. It could end up below 3C, which would be quite an achievement. Even the running CET for March 2006 stayed above 3C before the end-of-month mildness arrived.
  12. August 1995 February 1996 July 2006 January 2010 December 2010
  13. Hard to believe there was ever a thread called "2012 UK Drought".
  14. Delete me. I'm on the other side of the world.
  15. I didn't realise there was such bad flooding in NSW. I've been in Sydney the past couple of days and we had a very wet day yesterday culminating in a thunderstorm. It's been overcast for the most part.
  16. Has that incident in Cuba been confirmed? It's not on any news sites yet. The following image from the BBC News website shows a six metre-wide hole left by a meteor fragment in the ice on Lake Cherbakul, 50 miles west of Chelyabinsk:
  17. That's insane.Here's another perspective: http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np_mpGYSBSA&feature=player_embedded Scary stuff.
  18. A meteor(s) has exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk. There's been damage to buildings, though I'm not sure if it's directly from the impact or from the shockwaves. I hope no-one's dead or injured.
