  1. Many thanks to MIA & other posters on here that make this thread an extremely interesting one. I only came across it a few weeks back, but is now one of the first I look at when logging in. A very Merry Christmas to one and all.
  2. Just returned from a children's carol service at our local church. As it was quite warm and dry when we left home I did not bother taking a coat with me and we all got rather wet getting back to the car in the steady drizzle, not that our grandson seemed to mind. I hope everyone has an enjoyable Christmas and a healthy, peaceful New Year.
  3. Good Morning MIA I trust you are well. Thanks again for another very interesting read. One of my other interests is philately and by coincidence yesterday afternoon we held our fortnightly meeting which included a guest speaker who provided several frames covering postal services in Canada's Arctic Northwest Territories from the weather stations located there. I have found the following link covering these stations to assist me in producing my report to local press and national magazines. High Arctic Weather Stations | The Canadian Encyclopedia WWW.THECANADIANENCYCLOPEDIA.CA History, politics, arts, science & more: the Canadian Encyclopedia is your reference on Canada. Articles, timelines & resources for teachers, students & public. Are the 6 stations you have mentioned include any of those listed in the above article. Kind regards Dave
  4. Tim or another poster, could someone tell me what the final chart is all about. Many thanks Dave
  5. Good morning everyone. I was uncertain as to where I should post this posting so moderators please feel free to transfer it to a more appropriate place should you so deem. Last night I watched the BBC1 documentary presented by David Attenborough in the first of seven programmes on the world's continents the first being on Antarctica. It was a fascinating hour's viewing and one thing that attracted my attention was one of his final comments with regards to the waters surrounding the continent. He said that it absorbed twice as much carbon dioxide as the Amazon rain forests. Earlier he had stated that the Antarctic sea ice is melting at an alarming rate. These two pieces of information got me thinking. If more sea is exposed because of the ongoing melt does that mean that a greater surface will be available for carbon capture and will this in turn slow down global warming and eventually reverse it in that particular region at least? Kind Regards Dave
  6. Thanks for your reply. It makes sense now. I am fine thanks, but my wife had a fall about a month ago and damaged her elbow & both knees. For a couple of weeks she could not cut her own food or walk and so I was head cook & bottle washer. I hope your operation was a success & likewise your wife's is when her time comes. Kind Regards Dave
  7. Good Morning MIA I trust you & your family are well. Thanks for a very interesting read. Not used to some of the phrases you use could you please explain to an ignoramus like me what is meant by "flash melt" & "flash refreeze" Many thanks Kind Regards Dave PS happy very belated birthday for your wife on 12th September
  8. Hello Mark I trust you are well. Been very wet in mid Essex too. I agree about bringing on the snow, that is my type of weather. Make sure your Coop has enough soup in for the Big Freeze some pundits are predicting this winter. To be on the safe side you should also stock up on burgers & steaks for BBQ's. Kind Regards Dave
  9. Had rain for last 45 minutes. Really annoyed as I looked at the forecast this morning and presenter stated isolated showers in the southeast. As it was sunny and we have guests coming for lunch I thought I would be ahead of the game and have everything ready for the BBQ which I was intending to start up just after midday. Got all chairs and tables out from the shed and then it started to rain. I will have to BBQ under umbrella and everyone eating indoors including a very active 2 year old who would not be out of place on a demolition site. Hopefully the rain clears soon @markwheeler if you are reading this have a good holiday. Kind regards Dave (AKA Desperate of Chelmsford)
  10. I was brought up in Writtle, a very interesting place. Marconi had a research establishment there and the first public broadcast was from there. When I worked for Essex County Council I used to make use of their weather records. One year whilst in money saving mode the energy conservation officer had the bright idea over a Christmas/ New Year holiday period to rely entirely on frost thermostats on the outside of county buildings with the heating only coming on if the external temperature only fell below a certain level. Sadly following several mild days over the holiday period a very vigorous cold front came down from the north and temperatures fell like a stone. By the time the heating kicked in it was too late and at least £200,000 worth of damage was the result with pipes bursting come the thaw. This caused ceilings to collapse, electrics to be damaged, carpeting to be ruined and gymnasium floors to warp. in addition school books and IT equipment was damaged. Trying to save money does not always work. I was actually in Writtle today visiting by 90 year old uncle and getting some shopping for him. it certainly felt very hot. The thought of an arctic plunge like I mentioned above sounds almost appealing. Kind Regards Dave
  11. Hello Snipper, The Highways Agency (I guess) at the Boreham Interchange and the ECC Highways Department on the junction of Lawn Lane and The Chelmer Valley Way seem to want to make the landscape as barren as they can. In the past few months they have removed the majority of the trees and bushes. So much for thinking "green"
  12. Yes one of the joys working in construction. I too am retired now, but my middle son is an electrician. In the summer he often has to go into lofts with services and it is very unpleasant sweating with the fibreglass insulation sticking to you. On the other hand in the winter it is outside work in the freezing cold fixing pub external lighting. BTW did you work for a consultancy?
  13. Very nice here too. According to the main model thread it looks like next week could be quite hot down in our region, albeit humid at times with a chance of thunderstorms.
  14. I hope so Harry or Ice Day & I will be very disappointed. Last week I was on holiday in Lowestoft & we had quite a storm overnight. A repeat in Chelmsford would be good or am I being too greedy?
  15. Hello Mark. I know where you will be next week. Next to the freezer cabinets. It certainly looks as if it is going to be very hot by Thursday. Two of my three sons will be missing the exceptional weather here. Both are on holiday- One is going to Oregon to visit a former school friend of his who emigrated there. I am taking him to Heathrow early Wednesday morning and the other son and his partner are going to Croatia for 7 days starting Friday and followed by 3 days in Bosnia. At least trhey will be enjoying hot weather too. Trust you and the family are well. Kind regards Dave
  16. I agree with you. For your area it does look concerning. Before I retired I worked for a consultant engaged by Cambridge County Council to deliver highway works. I was involved in quite a few projects mostly involving bridges but also works to Nene Quay at Wisbech. On one such occasion at Wisbech we had to cease work for a couple of days as the river was in flood & dead cattle were being swept along in the current, Another project was the provision of a cycle track & pedestrian bridge across the flood plain at St Neots. Flooding there is quite a sight when the river is in full flow. Hopefully it will not be as bad this time. Kind Regards Dave
  17. Good Morning everyone. A little drizzle at about 09.30 but has brightened up again in mid Essex. When is the rain due to arrive or will we miss out? To my untrained eye it is not clear if the trajectory of the system will give us much rain or if it will be confined to west of here. Perhaps we will just end up with a windy couple of days. Hopefully it will not affect the Trooping of the Colour flypast as the aircraft fly right over our house and we look forward to this every year. Kind Regards Dave
  18. After early morning showery rain we have had nothing more today & so the predominately dry weather continues. We have had to water all our potted plants again today. The allotment is also fairly dry & I will have to water it on my next visit. Rhubarb doing OK though. The early part of the weekend looks wet & windy. As a Chelmsford City supporter I am travelling down to Chippingham for the final league game in the season, before we are engaged in the playoffs. I only hope it is nit a repeat of my experience a month or so back when I traveled down to Torquay for a rearranged game that had previously been cancelled. The supporters coach had left our ground at noon and arrived at Plain Moor at 17.50, only to be told 20 minutes later the game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. We left and arrived back at Chelmsford at 1 am. Kind Regards Dave
  19. Good Morning to all in the south west and central southern England from a south-easterner. I am a Chelmsford City supporter and we have a rescheduled for this Tuesday evening away at Torquay United. The game was to be played a coupe of weeks back but cancelled the day before due to a waterlogged pitch. As a lot of supporters had already booked trains and hotel/ B & B accommodation they still traveled down to make the best of things. I have booked the coach for Tuesday with a departure time of 12 noon, but wonder if there any posters on here based in the Torquay who can give their view with existing conditions and what is likely to happen over the next couple of days as to whether the game is likely to go ahead. Kind Regards Dave
  20. Good Morning fellow SE/EA weather folk. I am too chicken to post this on the hunt for cold thread in case I am accused of posting it in the wrong thread. I do wonder with all these super duper computers at weather companies disposal these days if the information gathered and analysed is too complex and it misses the wood for the trees so to speak. By taking too much into account it increases the area of uncertainty. To use an analogy if anyone looks at the risk down to the minuscule they would do nothing but stay in bed all day. Even then they may feel they are at risk from an aircraft plummeting through their roof. What do others think, or have I got it all wrong? Kind Regards Dave
  21. If you have cross eyes Pete should it not be welldowning. I am no expert but I believe that your area will do fine from Thursday night's precipitation. In fact South Suffolk could be the sweet spot.
  22. Hello TI I enjoy your posts & the optimism they engender. As far as impactual snowfall is concerned could you advise whether your comment refers to all the UK or where you consider the snow line will be. Many thanks. Kind Regards Dave
  23. Please forgive me for asking as I am a relative novice at reading charts but do you mean a north England snow line or an England snow line. Where do you expect the demarcation to be? Many thanks. Kind Regards Dave
  24. Good Morning everyone. I am sure Ice Day as a fellow Chelmsfordian will agree although we have endured for the past fortnight or so a lot of cloudy, drizzly weather, albeit generally on the mild side, the ground for this time of the year seems much drier than usual. I cannot speak for other parts of the country but surely if repeated elsewhere this will bode well for the ground becoming frozen quicker once the colder weather arrives after what seems to be weeks of eager anticipation by eager beavers like me. This in turn will mean that any snow that subsequently does fall (other parameters being in place of course) stands a better chance of settling. This morning's charts as kindly displayed by others this morning plus the comments by the more knowledgeable posters on here have enhanced my confidence that we are on the cusp of something memorable. Kind Regards Dave
