  1. the latest fax charts ditching the warm sector, its now over southern ireland..

    -3.1c DP -5c

Yes, another poster alluded to this likelihood earlier. EDIT:- Wysiwyg - beat me to it!

The BBC - and this was also mentioned - have indicated a cold front moving south, warm sector not in evidence - if my memory isn't playing tricks on me again!

So positive news as we approach the much more reliable timeframe. smile.gif

  2. The station at Brierlow Bar on the south side of Buxton, a few miles north of me had a min' of -7.5c last night and hasn't been above -3.4c since 0900 today, it's now back to -4.2c. They're also in an ideal location for low min' at 340m a.s.l but also in a shallow valley; -10c could be on the cards for them tonight.

Buxton must be a really great place to live - or anywhere with that kind of altitude I suppose. Those temperatures do not surprise me and having been up there a few times it can, obviously, be really badly affected by snowfall when conditions are right. I have known Buxton to be completely cut off - particularly during the '80's. I cannot remember when that last happened here.

  3. I reckon your min' could be pushing -10c tonight OON. The combination of snow cover, light winds and being in an upland valley, almost perfect for low min'.

    I agree.

The minimum here this winter has so far been -8.2c. Tonight will come close to that I would have thought with a snowcover - and others such as OON may well, as you say, see -10.0c or possibly even lower.

  4. I hope lots more parts of the North West particularly those at lower levels and near the coasts benefit from the colder snap that's on it's way. Let's hope more of us get to see this lovely white stuff!

I echo those sentiments entirely. Looking at the radar, it seems that the final band of ppn is virtually upon us - if not some of us already. After that just watch those temperatures plummet. smile.gif

  5. Some more snow in the past hour or two, quite heavy at times and the wind is whipping up blowing it almost horizontal! We have about 4 inches at this level now which was very unexpected! Temp dipped below freezing now, -0.3°C

Sounds about right James - much the same here.

Should be a very sharp frost once this lot clears.

  6. whyo's got any news from saddleworth? atm here, the wind is causing the snow to whip in almost horizontally. Granted it's fairly light flakes, but given a bit more elevation, you might pick up some blizzard conditions - bet the M62 is a no go currently.

I've been trying to say this for a while.

I do not live at a location as elevated as some of the other posters from Saddleworth on this thread, however I can say that the temp. has dipped a fraction below freezing and the snow is beginning to drift. good.gif

PS. Like the avatar by the way - good film laugh.gif

  7. getting marginal again im sick of marginal now.

why is it so wet and marginal we are supposed to be under -8 uppers by now???????? wallbash.gif

    Really surprising!

There is nothing marginal about this whatsoever here. Powder snow, a temp. of 0.2c and dewpoint of -1.0c. I hope it improves for you.

I would like to know though if anyone else has the same conditions that I am reporting.

  8. the clue is in the name

European Centre for Medium Range Forecasting

It was set up to run forecasts, chiefly from T+72 to T+240, to try and make forecasts in that period of the same accuracy as the period T+12 to T+72.

Obviously they run forecasts prior to the times I've given but their main emphasis is on the 72-240 period.

Thank you for the clarification there John.

I knew that it was designed for up to at least T+168 although I was unsure how far beyond that its capabilities extended.

By the way - and off topic, I subscribed to NW Extra the other day - with radar and NMM charts. First class and well worth it. I know that several others have said the same thing but I must concur! drinks.gif

  9. Regarding the precipitation forecasts, I am amazed by how bad the ECM can be at even a short range. It didn't pick up the signal for todays streamer over northwest England. The gfs picked it up only yesterday but underestimated the intensity of it!

    Karyo

To be fair the ECM is not a short-range forecasting tool. It was not designed for that purpose.

The ECM is a medium-range forecasting model best utilized for the 72 - 168hrs range if I am not mistaken.

  10. I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing something from this, it just keeps on getting thicker and thicker, it must be the altitude, I am sure oldham, saddleworth and that area should see somthing, its heading in that direction on the radar.

We are indeed! I did not realise myself how much had actually fallen and continues to fall until I opened the door this morning. Merely looking at it through the window did not give a true indication of snow depth on this occassion.

Snowing quite heavily at the moment. cold.gif
