  1. morning guys, not read through the latest posts so apologies if this has been answered. i have some planned work in Cardiff, Bristol and London next week and need your outlook.  On the MOD thread there is a lot of hype about this incoming northerly blast bringing cold, wintry, snowy and windy period. But I do not have enough experience to understand whats going on in the MOD thread!! Of course I know things can change as this is quite a far off event in terms of models etc. My question is to fellow Welsh people:

When is this likely to be hitting South Wales area?

    What can we expect?

    How long will this last?

Hoping you can give some opinions etc. Hoping the more experienced here will be able to give info in laymans terms with some charts and explanations. Thanks all and have a fab Saturday.

  2. Carol Kirkwood just said its going to be up and down, never heard this before its mild its cold its mild its cold next week.

    Could make that a song.

Made a slight air frost last night at -0.3c the snow wants to hang on what`s left of it,lethal out there with black ice.

I had a chuckle at their comments as well on breakfast LOL

  3. So quiet in here! Had hardly any rain yesterday let alone anything else! What are our prospects over the next week for cold and snow? or are we likely to just have more cold rain?

gosh all we had was rain from 1pm until i woke at 6am this morning LOL. I guess everyone are nursing 'major disappointment hangovers' due to lack of snow and the warnings made.

  4. Well there's a lot of precipitation in south Wales heading this way. If and when that gets here, that will be the sign of how this is going.

Until then, nothing to see really.

just falling as rain here in South East Wales.

  5. Warnings just issued

Issued at: 1051 on Tue 20 Jan 2015

Valid from: 1600 on Tue 20 Jan 2015

Valid to: 1200 on Wed 21 Jan 2015

An area of snow is expected to extend northeastwards from parts of Wales across the Midlands and into parts of northern England on Tuesday evening and night, persisting into Wednesday morning. Accumulations of 3-8 cm are likely in places, perhaps 10-15 cm very locally on high ground. The snow should ease gradually through Wednesday morning. The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to transport.

    Chief Forecaster's assessment

A complex frontal system is running into the UK from the west and is coming up against a stagnant cold airmass on its forward flank over central and eastern areas. Rain arriving in westernmost areas will readily turn to snow as it comes inland later on Tuesday, spreading into Wales along with central and northern England overnight. The snow is likely to accumulate easily, given the cold ground surfaces. Details remain uncertain regarding the extent and amount of snowfall, in particular the northward extent of snowfall into northern England (indeed some areas may miss the snow altogether). Therefore it is likely that this warning will be updated in the light of new information and may be upgraded to Amber should confidence increase sufficiently.

Regions / parts of regions under the warning

    South West England (Gloucestershire only)

    Wales

    North West England

    Yorkshire & Humber

    West Midlands

    East Midlands

    East of England

beat me to it. i got text at 10:53 but no internet to post it lol

  6. Watching various weather forecasts on TV, online and reading online posts - in my opinion anytime from 6pm tonight until 6am Wednesday morning Wales as a whole has a chance of snow. After dark is the obvious time, but depends on how quick this front fizzles away when meeting the warm air - so could be rain or snow. Nowcasting event again. Exciting times though!

  7. Anything to sell papers! Any one heard from that exacta weather man about the cripling winter we are having For 3 months ?

Aghh James 'Mad one' yeah hes always putting out exclusive press interviews to make some cash from his back bedroom professional weather station LOL

  8.

    GFS

Goes for a snow to rain event on Tuesday with 850HPa uppers rising to -2c. However reverting back a bit to snow later as upper falls. Staying as snow longer in the North, for a Shorter time in the south.

Wednesday sees more of a risk of snow for Southern areas colder uppers edge in. (Back below -5c)

However precipitation amounts are not massive anywhere.

All the above is entirely based on GFS 12Hz run.

Evening all, albeit late! I do like those charts, lovely. Case of just nowcasting and see what happens. :)

  9. OK guys just woke up after a busy night shift and weather watching. I can report during the night of only freezing rain and hail falling here. This afternoon this is a slight covering over the mountains of snow, but more importantly the rain froze in back garden. Its like an ice rink out there even now.

  10. No ppn here now, I think we're south of the showers damn.

    That's incredibly bad luck.

I know it's easy to get despondent but we tend to do much better for snow in South Wales than in Southern England, including the Southeast, and perhaps the Midlands.

But our ASL is less than 100 metres so no suprise. PPN started again heavy wintry mix.

  11. Wow, that must have you on tenterhooks when you hear the "snow north of the M4" line.

Yeah, it's still heavy. Nice little covering now. I'll take a picture shortly.

2010, really? What about January 2013? We had one major fall followed by two significant falls that left approaching a foot in places by the end of the spell.

Missed us completely by just a few miles, pontypridd, cilfynydd had it and taffs well. i would say 3-4 miles either side of us.

  12. Snow in Cardiff, wintry mix in Upper Boat, snow in Nelson.

You've got a microclimate, worldairgroup! The San Francisco of South Wales.

Always strange here. Im literally looking at A470 out my back window 100 yards away. Last time we had snow and to talk about was the major snow event in 2010. Always seem to miss it. Does not help we are in a valley with two huge mountains each side of us lol

  13. First flakes falling here, should be with you worldairgroup and Clair within the next fifteen-twenty minutes.

Rock on Jackfrost LOL. Thanks. Incidentally think traffic wales have a fault on their CCTV Cameras. Cannot view any of them.

  14. I sympathise. I miss my old lamppost too. Many an hour I spent gazing at it. I moved in 2013 and have only recently discovered how rubbish my new lamppost is. It's much further away and well, with my eye sight these days I had to use my camera and zoom in to get a decent view. Maybe I'll just have to wait until it blankets the ground. Lol. I may have a long wait.

Never mind Clair. It will work out in the end. Well no sign  of ppn here...yet, but cloudy and feel is getting slightly warmer.

  15. Light sleet now with a thaw starting but another nice surprise if temporary snowfall!

Thank goodness for the lamppost directly outside although thought its usually off by now.

Tony I think my lampost has gone to find yours LOL may they live happily ever after.

  16. Funny you should say that ......We`ve got the same problem in Harborne, LED lights all around the base of our flat.

absolutely.....crap viewing with the naked eye....but work with the lower exposure of the Night setting on Brumcam :)

ps... send some of the white stuff over the border :D

hey arnie, problem we have is I now have no lampost to even watch LOL. I think looking at radar its just approaching Merthyr so I would hope its coming my way within the next 30 minutes. then i will have chat with the beast for you and put in a good word LOL. Good luck regardless or what you or I end up with.

  17. I miss the orange lampposts which I can barely remember from my childhood. Here in Caerphilly they're almost extinct, replaced by yellow and increasingly the silvery LED types.

The orange added such an amazing glow to the snow.

(MODS - off topic i know but relevant to lamp post watching) yes thats what we had orange ones - but basically they have totally removed the one opposite my house. the new ones are amazingly bright but i know my neighbour is not impressed as its right outside her bedroom window and she felt like she was at the Brit Awards every night! think they ended up putting deflectors onto it for her. Also it makes our driveway pitch black now in the evening which does not bode well for security.
