  1. Very heavy rain shower at 12.30 with small hail at 1231. I reckon this is the heaviest rain at this station in July. The reason being the showers are home grown and maturing overhead coupled with an offshore westerly wind. The shower moved away east and turned into a slight thunderstorm over the New Gilston/Largo Law area of east Fife. Heard 2 loud rumbles of thunder at 1240 and 1242h.

Edit: distant thunder at 1252 and 1254hr.

  2. An energetic thunderstorm passed directly overhead at 10am today. Frequent C-G lightning and very loud thunder. Brief power cut with car and house alarms going off and dogs barking for miles around. Very heavy rain with large raindrops for about 30 minutes, although nothing spectacular. A lightning strike set a house on fire in the Kennoway Burns. I spoke to one of the fireman and he said the house is gutted. He also said another house was struck in the nearby town of Buckhaven. There was a 2-car accidient on the Kennoway to Leven road. One of the telegraph poles has been shattered in pieces, don't know if caused by the accident or from a lightning strike. I first heard thunder at 9am to the south-west and the last thunder at 11am to the north.

The sun came out this afternoon as it became very humid. Max 20.7C. Recent rain shower.

  3. Hottest day of this remarkable spell, max 28.6C with no seabreeze. That makes it the hottest day in Baintown since 28.6C recorded on 21st August 1995 (site 300m NW of current one). The 3rd day with a max at least 28.0C in this spell. Still 25.5C at 8pm. The westerly wind increased this afternoon and has veered NW. Towering Cumulus congestus around 2-3pm.

As for the haar, should become extensive tomorrow night after a sunny day.

I should add although my site is not official the Stevenson screen and liquid in glass thermometers are Met Office spec and the LIGS were recently calibrated at a UKAS lab.

  4. Max 28.1C, 0 around 2pm....still 27C at 5pm with westerly breeze (no seabreeze) as yet. The westerly breeze picked up this afternoon. Thick patches of Cirrus and Altocumulus after 2pm prevented an even higher max. What a difference the wind direction makes...on Tuesday 9th NW wind max 28.0C....Wednesday 10th, haar with east wind (off the sea), max 15.8C....Thursday easterly flow max 19.6C....

  5. I've looked through my station records and drawn up a shortlist of hot days (max >=25.0C) at my site.

    1. max 28.6C 21st August 1995 (different site, nearby open grass field)

    2. max 28.0C 9th July 2013

    3. max 27.6C July 2006

    4. max 26.4C 10th July 2005

    5. max 26.4C July 2009

    6. max 26.0C 9th August 2003

    7. max 25.8C 8th July 1999

    8. max 25.6C 16th August 1997

  6. Speaking of previous March's, does anyone remember a heavy snowfall in mid-March 2006? It was on a Saturday night and the police had to force a night club to stay open to provide shelter for hundreds of people stranded in Glasgow city Centre because the snow had forced all the taxis off the road.

Remember it well. That was a powdery snow frontal breakdown. We got about 13cm with 2 feet drifts.

    Currently, 0.9C/0.0C/-1.5C

  7. Well, I have arrived in the Kingdom of Fife. The flight to Edinburgh allowed some good views of a snowy Scotland although even here elevation appears to be the key to how much has settled. I am now very close to the coast, near St Andrews, and all around here is green/brown. Looking west from Edinburgh, with a little elevation and away from the Forth and sea the snow cover looked to be quite impressive. Looking out of the hotel window I can see lines of showers passing to the south of here, probably hail/sleet by the sea but snow inland again. I can't see to the East at what might be blowing in on the wind It's cold-ish, but not exceptionally so.

One of my fellow passengers, Scottish, described the snow as 'London Snow' by which he meant you could see the grass!

Friday to me still looks uncertain in terms of the northern extent of the front. Any views?

    Thanks

    AS

Altitude is definitely key around here...i live 15km SW of St ANdrews. I've still got about 2 inch lying on the grass. 2-3km south of here on the coastal strip near the Forth, the ground is brown/green. Less than 1km north of here, at 200masl, there's a good 4 inches.
