  1. the only melt I have noticed today is on roofs where central heating has been blasting all day, this shows some lofts are poorly insulated (my house included) this is why their are so many icicles around, nothing else around my location has melted. I must agree with some of the earlier posts that when the wind picks up from the sea things become very marginal around the coastal plain, but this spell of cold weather has been very unusual and could spring a real suprise, lets hope the warnings for once in these situations comes to fruition.pardon.gif

thats the way i'm looking at it now gaz, as far as I'm concerned this current cold spell for us is on its last legs, so if I'm wrong i wont be dissapointed :cray:

  2. Blimey, temperatures only 3c below normal...big warm-up!

Low pressure on the 18z undercutting the high..let the easterlys begin once again.

ok here's a question, we have just over a foot of snow lying on the ground in places, if temps remained around the 3/4 degree mark all week here in Teesside, how much of the snow would dissapear?

  3. Agreed TEITS and I think this has been understated within many of the forecasts so far. We on the East Coast (N Norfolk) already have temps of +2C and rising dewpoints! For me, it's the beginning of the end for this particular spell.

yes I also agree, its got a little milder here as the day as gone on ( Teesside ) other posters in the yorkshire/pennines thread who are on the coast are saying its warming up there too, not to sure if I will see snow like we've had the past two days again for a while, roll on the next spell of cold weather :hi:

  4. I DONT WANT THIS SNOW TO START TO THAW ON MONDAY! :( ive waited so long for this snow ill be gutted if it all goes next week! :(

Fingers crossed it wont tur to wet snow... please....

I must admit i'm alittle worried about those temps the bbc have forecasted for my area all next week, a week of 4 degrees will damage our snowfall and were down for light rain on wednesday.

  5. OK, but surely there is the possibility that if sleet and wet snow fall at night they could freeze? Unless of course that the only way sleet and wet snow could fall would be milder air from the North Sea rather than other unfavourable conditions.

Anyway I'm not expecting anything from this event so I'll either get what I expected or be pleasantly surprised.

alza thats my take on things now, I seen the best snowfall since 1992 ( if not better ) there are a few experienced forecasters in the general discussion thread saying the north east will get another pasting next week, personally I cannot see it myself now, I think we've had our lot, its time to enjoy it while its here.

Just for the record on January the 2nd we got heavy snow and not sleet/wet snow so anything is possible when our area is forecast for sleet.

  6. I think it will get up to 2 or 3 degrees tomorrow within about 10 miles of the coast, tonight will be less cold thank to the easterly winds so the higher starting point will allow the temperature to rise high enough to initiate a slow thaw before it refreezes. If the sleet and snow arrives during tomorrow night the temperature might be low enough to keep it on the right side of marginal, and we could see some significant snowfall. If it arrives during daylight hours there could be a problem.

lets hope it stays away during the daylight hours alza, Plus the snow cover will help keep the temps down, its clear here now and The snow is starting to sparkle so the temp must be slipping away despite the wind coming in from the coast, if it stays clear I think we can forget about seeing temps above 0, which is what we want.

  7. Hi guys, very little snow today, just the odd shower lasting a few minutes, the wind has picked up alot and is dragging the temp up with it, far less cold than its been the last two days, I think we have seen our lot for the current spell now, lets just see how long this snow cover will last's. I also seen the sky weather report and they had our part of the north east been 4 degrees tomorow and monday, well through experience of the weather round my way, if thats the case then we will deffo get rain if there is any ppn about.

  8. I'm no expert (far from it!) but snow cover is the key here for any potential breakdown, surely?

Cold/bitterly cold to our east, cold to our south, obviously colder still to our north and of course naturally we look to our west. However, the USA is buried in snow too, greenland/iceland etc. even parts of north africa have potential 4 snow this weekend. How can anyone be sure of what the next step is, the models barely get a grip on this so gut feeling is used.

My gut feeling is for the breakdown of services/society/normal 90's/00's life before the breakdown of this spell. Cold until Feb at least or even March what about that?

Sorry, just trying to be realistic and am hopefully not dramatising here

    Snowy Cheers

    STORMBOY

I am right in thinking most of the northern hemisphere is under snow at the moment, like you say the usa have been battered, uk and europe have snow cover and have been battered and china has also been beltered with snow this winter, is there a pattern happening here are the so called world powers keeping something hush hush lol.

OK I'VE BEEN WATCHING TO MANY FILMS but you've got to admit it a pretty good start to winter

  9. The amount of snow that's lying and the the predicted temperatures it will take some shifting, they will still be lying snow from this cold spell when the next one hits.

thats what I am hoping for Hagler, I'm hoping a quick reload after a slight mild period ( if you can call 3 degrees a mild period ) which may come into play sometime soon.

  10. What bare ground because the snow has blown into 10ft drifts? Give me 1ft of level preferably wet snow any day of the week.

was watching look north tonight they reckon, monday top temp will be 3 degrees along with Tuesday except as Tuesday moves on drifting snow with strong winds will blow in and continue into wednesday, may not be over for a while yet?

  11. After this clears the showers in the North Sea long right on target to move into the North East later. They are way too far out to say for certain, they could fizzle out but I have a good feeling many of us will get some heavy showers later in the night and early tomorrow.

This lot is still intensifying a little on it's back edge, looks like at least another hour of snowfall before it clears, it may clear from Teesside a little sooner.

cheers MCT, I can confirm its still snowing here, lighter than it was but its been snowing for 6 hours now.

  12. Pleased to hear you're enjoying it!

Those showers following on behind are really intensifying and there's more appearing all the time. After this dumping is over there could be plenty more to come for the rest of the night into tomorrow.

    This really is brilliant! :D

Hi MCT, I'm going to sound greedy here but anymore spells due tonight for Teesside tonight? :whistling:

  13. your right because water is less dense than land and takes a lot longer to cool down in the long run ,so the north sea temps are normally colder in feb/mar than dec/jan, that is in normal winters, but this winter ain,t normal

I'm no expert but I have a gut feeling some type of snow event on a massive scale may kick off come febuary, this is the best start to a winter I have ever seen. Anyway even if we dont see another drop of snow this winter i'll be glad I witnessed the events of the past couple of days roll on feb/march :whistling:

  14. I think you have seen the worst, sorry best of it now as it shifted further north, but there may still be a sting in the tail in the early hours. Keep an eye on the showers out to sea, of they start to intensify.....

I think its only fair we share some of this with our fellows friends up the coast :whistling:

  15. even once the atlantic kicks back in with its warmer winds and rain.it will take until april to get rid of all signs of snow.

we're just heading into winter now.

am I right in thinking the north sea will be alot colder come febuary, plus febuary is normally a cold month anyway, we could see something even more special come then, along way off I know but like you said we are just heading into winter now?

  16. guys I cannot believe what has happened here the last two days, tonight it has snowed for 5 hours solid, I dont think I will ever see anything like this again for many a year to come, I had 1 ft of snow in my garden at 6pm and its been snowing all night, must be breaking records here, I would just like to know how long it will take to clear?, I seen on the weather tonight the temp on monday tuesday been 3 degrees, that wouldn't shift it alot, so I'm thinking by the time a possible reload comes in we could have some serious serious amounts of snow on our hands, am I right in thinking that way?
