Temperature dropping fast here, 3.1c a drop of 3c in under 2 hours.

wind really picked up as well, seems windier than big daddy Beast #1

Yes, temp seems to be dropping fast. There isn't meant to be any disruptive snow here through the day is there? I have two boys heading to work soon. During the last beast everywhere closed suddenly and it was bedlam with everyone trying to get home. One of my boys had to walk 4 miles home in it

  2. Rapid thaw in Poole, it's almost all gone. Managed to have my fun last night. I'm content with that. The freezing rain was lethal. We had to crack through the layer of ice to get to the snow. Last night 2 of my grown up children and me (19 and 21) were outside like big kids throwing snow balls, stomping through the ice and snow having great fun. Yes it was a nightmare walking to and from work but it was lovely when I had a chance to mess about in it. If it stayed the powdery stuff that would be fine but I'm glad the ice has all but gone. Having said that, it's been a memorable spell.

Yes, I understand that, and everybody thanks you for your's and your colleagues efforts. However, there must be some parameters and systems in place that protect you as a worker (what if your children were home from school on top?) and ensure there is enough resident staff to satisfy the safety and care of patients. It can be done in NHS Hospitals effectively - even the Army will help out. Perhaps that would be an avenue for your employers to tap into.

It was quite amazing actually. To see the efforts of people helping each other and doing their best. There were some people giving lifts in 4x4 and one driver went and got us some bread. Yesterday one of the trained nurses went to pick people up and he was one of those staying on site. There was a contingency for those who couldn't make it. No matter job we do in the home we all have the same training. That helped to cover. We all did our best and our residents were well cared for. That's all that matters.

Workers need to have clearer guidelines. Most go to work because they feel they should, and to stay home would be somehow wrong. I think that when we get MetO warnings and weather is as severe as this, there should be another level of advice/law that kicks in to protect workers and that trumps workplace pressure. And, that the guidelines become instruction to employers. You should never have been put in danger getting to work, neither should your colleagues.

That's true and I agree but it's a dementia care home and none of us, whatever job we do there will want to stay home if it's at all possible to get to work. At least three members of staff stayed on site for 30 hours covering those who could not get in. Im glad i made it and would do the same tomorrow if I had to

  5. Well after a second go I made it into work. A 25 min walk took me 50 mins this morning. It was reported that 2 staff had fallen over on their way to work and had to turn back. It was still raining and freezing everything on impact. Lethal. I never EVER want to see that again. It was significantly better on the way home but still very slippy. The snow is still perfect under the sheet of ice. It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen or at least for a very long time!

Terrible dilemma, I know. Is there a solution? Can a 4 x 4 pick you up? Will the care home be short of staff if you are not there? Can somebody more local cover your job for today?

Walking around on ice like this, on your own, is quite risky - especially as you do not feel confident in yourself to make such a journey.

I've rang in. I know some nurses have stayed on site since yesterday. I work in kitchens. Everyone in the same boat. Nothing we can do. I'm hoping someone can pick me up. It's only a 25 minute walk but impossible.

Yeah, a bit. It wasn't anywhere near as windy as the forecast suggested. It is stronger now, better late than never.

I was glad of that earlier. Snow still felt like needles on my face walking home from work. My poor son had to walk 4 miles in it to get home from work. Mine was only half hour walk. Not looking forward to walking to work tomorrow morning at 6am lol
