  1. People worried about this band need not worry. We are now entering an area of more instability and this band will be self perpetuating as it moves east.

Rather than a band it will just keep on coming and without a doubt grow in intensity, especially for those areas south and east of London.

If you look at the radar image you can see as it moves west it grows again on its eastern flank.

Snowing here nicely just SW of Faversham now, nothing too heavy but the wind is strengthening all the time bringing heavier bursts in downdrafts and lots of blowing snow.

    EDIT its now hammering down!!!

    James

Thanks for that reassurance and summary Barometric. I was rather worried it would fizzle out before it reaches us, as many other bands have. Hope your right!

  2. Very heavy snow here now!! Quite large flakes - really perfect snowfall, blowing around in the gusty strong wind. :o Probably what Neilsouth would describe as a BLIZZARD!! or WHITEOUT!! :p :o

This stuff is laying sooo well! Good call Steve, is this kinda thing looking to continue??

    Radar looks very promising!! :good:

Actually, it seems as though its dying a bit now, either way I'm happy with what I've got from it, shows the potential for Sat-Sun-Mon.

  3. bet you are all happy you stayed up now

im still hoping for a sharp heavy fall here in eltham... am i to expect any? i know b.heath has got heavy snow now and im not to far away

Yep sure am, hopefully see a bit more out of it too.

a quick 1cm here in 15 mins as we nailed the green pixel in the shower-

Many many down the pipe beginning to merge-

Heres the 2:10 image with GRAYS in essex as the postcode- as you can see many many showers developing in the esuary & the showers are getting into SE london & towards bromley / biggin hill-

We are seeing a streamer setting up South essex & NW kent-bonus snow is always the best

    S

Pretty much as good as it gets for me wind direction wise I think. Conditions are probably the best I've experienced so far for snowfall too, its off the really fluffy, dry variety and even though its light, it lays everywhere with relative ease :good:

  4. Dunno why but Essex always seems to escape the real warnings when the Southend area is so close to Kent!

Generally all of Essex is 3-7CM with Western parts a lot higher (up to 17CM). I hope that doesn't mean sleet in the East and South of Essex lol

I cannot believe how the radar has suddenly come alive in the last half hour, could be a huge band from Mid Suffolk down to Kent forming!!!

I don't have the NW Radar, so my tracking is a little delayed. I take it the PPN has developed quickly to my East. I am looking in a favorable position for it with the winds slightly more Easterly? So far this evening I really haven't got anything, with everything passing to my South - rather frustrating!

Also, how come nobodies on the chat!? :D

  5. Ahhh, somehow both these 'blobs' have managed to pretty much miss me completely with them drifting too far South, while their northern 'arm' that would be over me decays too quickly for anything of note. I'm pretty sure its due to the winds having just too much of a northerly element in them throughout the day, but that's all part of the game I suppose, hopefully tomorrow will bring something more interesting as winds become more favourable.

Just experienced a spell of what i can only describe as heavy snizzle, although the intensity was moderate the flakes were tiny, like little sparkles floating down.

Interestingly water is dripping quite quickly from the guttering just out my window even though its currently -4! Its helping to form pretty widespread and relatively large icecles and as the water hits the ground it freezes with a thick bumpy layer, almost like the biggings of stalagmites. Can't think whats causing this at such a low temperature? Maybe the effect of our central heating on the snow on the roof?

  6. Yet to see a flake here in the Sevenoaks area from this evening activities, really need to see the winds veer slightly more Easterly for us to receive anything of note, although that should hopefully happen as the night progresses.

Seems to me as thought Maidstone and similar areas in Central Kent are currently the sweet spot for Kent/Sussex with this wind direction...

  7. Welcome KK, my mum's flying to Auckland this evening, think she's looking forward to a bit of warmth. :)

Meanwhile, I just want to get a bit of sledging in :cold:

Thanks Jezzer. Lucky her! How long is she over there for? It has been really nice over the summer so far and everything is really dry, although the forecast is looking a little cloudy/rainy for her first day there but should get better after the first couple, reckon the warmth should be a real shock to the system anyway, even with rain/cloud.

Has she been there before? If she hasn't might just be worth mentioning the potential humidity; it can be really oppressive at this time of year if the days are calm, certainly far more so than over here. Also probably the bigger thing to watch out for is that the UV is extremely strong at around 12 to 14 on the UV scale during the summer and burns very quickly even under heavy cloud (ie less than 10 minutes without suncream), might catch her out, especially after not having much sun over the last few months here.

Apart from my doommongering on those topics  hope she has a great time, it should be really lovely and I can't deny I'm jealous!! :yahoo:

    Cheers :drunk:

  8. Welcome Kentish Kiwi, I know which side of the world I would prefer to be on and its not here :pardon:

Yeah, I do miss it and it is really lovely in the Summer, which has been a scorcher so far over there, although it is really great to see a true winter and some of the white stuff while over here, something we never see where I lived in the sub-tropical North, my relatives are always interested in seeing the pics I take, which is always a huge contrast to what they're experiencing at the time. My grandparent hadn't seen snow falling their entire life apart from when they came over here the other year!!

    Hi there

You lot normally get clobbered when there is a proper Thames Streamer going, I can see the hills towards Sevenoaks from here and often see the clouds over there with snow whilst it is dry here.

Really only clipped that last shower but it does look good for the rest of the night.

Yep sure does. Yeah, the Downs normally do really well out of those situations. Actually I've been up 'extreme sledging' at the top of the Kemsing Downs the last three days, where they've got a lovely powdery covering of around 20cm, beautiful views from up there - looks like something from Switzerland not the UK :)

Welcome to NW, Kentish Kiki :)

I'm in T. Wells so I'll be following your updates with interest. I hope we get a good dumping over the weekend.

We've got roughly 13cm here at the moment and the temp is reading -2.5C.

Sadly we missed the last blob of snow which passed just east of us.

Thanks mate, yep same here :cc_confused: but not to worry, I'm pretty sure were going to do quite well over the coming days ay, even overnight when the winds veer ever slightly more Easterly.

Also just wanted to say thanks for the welcome and replys everyone, I love this kind of winter weather, which is something I would have never seen back home, and have been following Netweather for the last few months, been great reading some of your reports and thoughts. Heres hoping for the coming weekend

  9. Whatcha Kiwi, have you skated on your lovely village pond yet ?:)

    Haha, nope not yet.

Other than thin ice forming on the surface its remained largely ice free, especially compared to the local lakes etc which have completely frozen over on the surface. I can only think its because of the ducks swimming around keeping it from forming or that they've added some kinda de-icer solution to the water.:pardon:

It has been recently refurbished and is looking really lovely with the winter scenery.

  10. Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd register to give snow reports from the Sevenoaks area (Otford, North-West Kent to be precise), which seems to be a relative black spot in coverage (although there is a decent amount of posters around the area such as Maidstone, Tonbridge, Tunny Wells and Bexleyheath).

Its clouded over currently, after a lengthy afternoon sunny spell, and I'm expecting some snow in the next half hour to an hour. It seems this blog that's effecting Maidstone and Central Kent is passing just to the west of me due to too much of a Northerly element to the winds, hopefully it can veer more Easterly overnight and we should hopefully receive a decent top-up ontop to the 10cm+ thats lying widely across this area. Currently monitoring that cluster of showers moving down the Essex coastal area for later.

Anyway, cheers, has been a very good winter so far, with four days off school including the spell before Christmas and hopefully it can get even better over the weekend!

Just thought I'd re-post my little introduction, as it sadly managed to find its way to be the last post of page 18  Hope you guys don't mind. :yahoo:

Snowing in tonbridge now and wind more gusty with it.... :yahoo:

Nothing here to the North of you just yet, seems the 'blob' managed to push just enough East to miss us completely, hopefully that stuff to its North-West will scrape us.

    Currently -2C and surprisingly calm...
