here we go, after a few days of raising our hopes, the models once again bring reality in with a thump. We aren't going to see any snow this winter... mark my words.
-
This winter is just turning out to be an extension of a normal 'autumn'. When they are having lying snow in north africa and we get nothing here, there is something seriously wrong going on. The jet stream and the azores high are being real trouble makers this winter. They are spoiling it for everyone. No doubt they will disappear for the summer and then reappear in time for next winter. The weather in this country is so unreliable and usually depressing.
-
I have a horrid feeling the battle this weekend will turn out to be a damp (literally) squid and will just go to show how consistently disappointing this winter has been. When they are even having lying snow in the deserts of north africa (and I don't mean the Atlas mountains) then you have to agree there is something seriously wrong going on. We can never win on this island.
-
when even the desert in north africa (and I don't mean the Atlas mountains) gets a covering of snow and snow drought Britain gets zilch, you know there is something going wrong somewhere.

This cold spell is turning into something of an anti climax. Doesn't even look as though we will get the 'snow event' when the milder air clashes with the cold air as the mild air is coming from the NW rather than the SW...... typical. Says it all for this winter really. It has been useless.
-
Well what a winter this has been.......not! Boring to say the least. If I could afford it I would definately emigrate to Canada or USA where at least they have seasons. Britain is quickly becoming a one season country (of mediocre, dull and miserable weather). Even the heatwaves are short lived and we can't even count on having decent summers, let alone winters. 5 days of snow (or heat and sun) and we think that is a good summer (winter). I personally can't really tell the differences between the seasons now, apart from it being a little cooler during the winter.

I wouldn't believe anything metcheck says. They can never decide which icons to put even down to the last few days.
-
The gritters are out because they have so much of the bleedin stuff to get rid of as they had stocked up thinking we could get another harsh winter (ha!!). Why they can't save it for the next bad winter I don't know. Okay they may have to wait 10-15 years but hey, at least they will be saving money not having to buy more grit in the meantime.

sorry about the rant, but it is just so frustrating in this country. Even 1 or 2 days of guaranteed snow each year (out of 365) would be enough, but no, we either get a winter with a lot of cold and snow (2010) or a year with nothing. It goes from one extreme to another. Although saying that, although we got the cold last December, the snowfall wasn't anything to get really excited about. Probably had about 2 inches throughout. Hardly snowmageddon.

I very much doubt there will be a snowy breakdown, more likely rain or sleet at best. This winter has just not had the right set ups for snow and I very much doubt that pattern will alter for the rest of the winter/early Spring. No doubt we will get the right conditions (meteorologically speaking) in the summer which would have resulted in bitter cold and snowy weather had it happened in the winter. I give up even hoping for the white stuff now as it never seems to materialise. If we can't get it with an easterly there is no hope.

What a pathetic winter this is turning out to be. Finally get some cold (although nowhere near as severe as they were predicting) and then it all goes pear shaped with no appreciable snow in the forecast for the future. I think this winter will go down as one of the most boring in recent years. No snow to speak of and consistently mild and rainy. I give up with winters in this country. It seems all we can guarantee is that they will be mild and rainy. Any hopes of snow are only dashed and I think this is only going to get worse over the next decade or so. I wish I could emigrate to Canada. I hate the UK weather.
-
Great, we finally get some (although nowhere near as brutal as was suggested) and it looks as though it's going to be a non event snow wise too. What's the point. I give up with winters in this country. They are not even worth looking forward to (unless you like mild and rainy weather). Now that is almost a guarantee. What a disappointment this winter has been.

this winter is rapidly turning out to be a no goer in terms of cold and snow. Yes we still have a month of winter left but the more the weeks progress the less likely we are to have any snow (or at least snow that lasts). Must be one of themost boring and mildest winters for quite a number of years. What a waste. now if we could get as much snow as we do gales and rain....!
-
i know what you mean with the models. Not sure why people bother with them if they change from one day to the next. may as well just stick your head out of the window and see what is actually happening rather than rely on inaccurate models which can't make up their mind.
-
yes I know the UK can have cold and snowy spells, but they are something that are few and far between you have to agree. We can go 10 - 15 years between 'decent' snow events happening. That is far too long in my books. Wish I could emigrate to canada or the US
-
typical how we have been prepared this winter with all the gritting stock and basically it hasn't been needed. Thank god we didn't invest in snowploughs and stuff like that as lots of people were suggesting we should during last winter. Britain is basically a snowless country and will never have prolonged severe cold and snow.
-
guys you are lucky you have anything. Here in the east midlands we have nothing.... as usual. I must be cursed, since moving from wales 20 years ago, you seem to be quite lucky with snowfalls to some degree. when i lived there, we had hardly anything. Don't get dispondent if it is wet ground. That happened here once and the snow started when it had been raining and the ground was soaking wet, but after an hour or so, the snow did start to settle and we ended up quite a few inches of lying snow.
-
i am tired of getting excited about any chance of cold and snowy whether only for it not to appear after all. The models are so up and down and this country is pants in delivering any decent cold or snow. A few days of guaranteed cold or a couple of inches of guaranteed snow each winter wouldn't be asking a lot, but in britain it is like asking for the earth. We just have boring winters (and not that much better summers) end of.
-
sorry guys, don't wanna spoil the party, but as with the whole of this winter, the upcoming cold weather prospects are now being downplayed and it looks like this winter is going to go down as one of mildest snow free winters in quite a few years.
-
i don't believe i missed the 5 minute 'snow event' in northampton earlier. It would help if the snow was a little more prolonged than a few minutes though. I must be cursed.
-
it never ceases to amaze me with the weather in the Uk. We get tons of mild wet weather and then when the chance for a bit of cold weather comes it always ends up in a 'will it, won't it' situation and usually doesn't materialise. Even having 2 days of guaranteed snow out of 365 isn't asking too much, but here in soggy mild britain, it seems it is. I'll believe the snow forecasts if it ever decides to fall.
-
I reckon 12.5c, judging by the winter so far. It has been ridiculously mild and there is no evidence to suggest February will be any different. Now if I had my way, the CET for Feb would be -5c, but we live in mild and murky ol britannia and we are never going to get cold like that... unless a new ice age happens.
-
will this boring mild weather never stop?..... probably not. I hate it.
-
I think I will become a forecaster. It's all guess work by the looks of it.

I don't think the word I have to describe Januar 2012 (or December 2011) would pass the moderators. Needless to say I am sick and tired of this non winter we are having this year. It's a holiday in the alps for me next year for definate now.
