  1. Getting thouroughly sick of all this mild and wet weather now. When will it ever stop for heaven's sake. I would not be surprised if this winter is a total washout (literally) with hardly any cold or snow. Our seasons just seem to be permanently wet now. Summer was awful and now it looks like winter will be a continuation of that theme. Lovely Britain....not!!

  2. The models were consistently showing substantial cold the past few weeks and although we have had a few days of cold, the prolonged severe weather has been hijacked by the usual atlantic mild weather. The chances of the UK being hit by a prolonged cold spell is very rare and 9/10 the mild weather will win. I also wonder why people even bother looking at the models if they end up being so inaccurate to be honest. As people keep saying the weather cannot be accurately forecast more than a few days beforehand, then what is the point of having these multi million pound computer giving you predictions which may (or may not) come true?

  3. I for one, will stop kidding myself that this winter will end up to be anything other than predominantly mild as per usual for UK winters. Yes, we will obviously have a few days of cold weather, but as for any substantial cold and snow, then I think we need to be realistic and not raise our hopes. We are unfortunate to live on an island stuck out in the Atlantic, with a gulf stream which ensures we don't normally get any substantial cold periods and if we do, they are shortlived affairs before the atlantic wins out again. I feel very depressed the way this winter is going and the thought of having to wait another 10 years before we get decent cold and snow events is far too long.

  4. This winter will be worse than last winter. Yes, it has been on the cold side for the early part of December, but dry with very little snow, if any. I think January and February will be equally dry and predominantly mild with periods of rain (not snow). This winter could go down as one of the worst for many years in respect of cold and snow. I have given up hoping for snow in this country. It's too much of a gamble and not worth raising hopes only for them to be dashed. Had enough of this countries weather, think I'll move to Switzerland.

  5. I have given up following the models as all they do is tease us with promises of cold and snowy easterlies only to backtrack at the last moment and as usual, we get the boring old westerlies with rain and mild weather. I know there are some on here who love the fact that the British weather is so unpredictable, but I would much prefer to have reliable weather systems than clutching at straws to be honest. Even when we do have cold winters, they are hardly that cold and snowy. Even 2010 wasn't that memorable. Yes, we had snow in December (wow!) and it was cold for most of that month, but then January and February were mostly mild and snowless. That's not what I would call a memorably cold winter. This year is even turning out worse than last year (if that's possble). At least we had one slight snowfall last December. So far this year, we've had none... and even the first frost was late this year. Bleedin country.

  6. I get the horrible feeling that even though this winter may be colder than average, that doesn't mean more snow. I think the colder spells will mostly be dry and the precipitation will fall as rain during the milder interludes as has happened this week with mainly sleet and raining falling for the majority of the country. If this does materialise, then it will be yet another disappointing UK winter.

  7. I don't think this evening's rain will turn to snow for the south east or anywhere from the north midlands southwards to be honest. It is cold but we need more than just cold for it to snow. I think next week could deliver some of the white stuff to much of the country though if things continue the way they have been showing on the charts in the past few days. Of course, this being the UK, it could all change in the blink of an eye.

  8. well it snowed heavily for about 6 hours yesterday evening in northampton and we've got about 3 inches of crisp lying snow on the ground. Even the snowfall from last weekend hasn't disappeared, so it is a very snowy landscape this morning and very cold. we have been very lucky in the east midlands i must say. best snowfalls for a good few winters and there i was beginning to write this winter off as a non starter. how wrong i was.

  9. i'm near northampton town centre. even here with all the traffic it must be a good 15cm and we already had lying snow still on the ground from last weekend. tonights snow has just refreshed everything. the snow keeps getting lighter and then getting heavy each time we think its all over. Huge flakes 10 mins ago

  10. so it looks like northamptonshire is once again in the firing line. Talk about swapping and changing. If we do get the white stuff it would be great if we get some big flakes this time around rather than the fine stuff. Saying that, I suppose I shouldn't be fussy and consider myself lucky to have a second round of snow. We still have a fair bit of lying snow from last weekend.
