  1. This winter though a thousand times better than last year, at times does leave you a little frustrated, especially when you are told to expect a raring arctic wind to freeze the parts you don't exposed. In reality the temperatures have been cool rather than Icy cold. If this is that cold blast from the north? I bet the polar bears up in the arctic must be sitting on their deck chairs, sipping on a piña colander and wondering what the met office are talking about!! ......anyway, enjoy the weekend midlanders no matter what falls from the sky. :-)
  2. Went to bed at midnight, snowing hard and road white over, just woke up and can't believe snow disappeared and heavy rain. Just looked out again and now sleet......crazy winter!! :-\
  3. From a coldies point of view, it's great the cold weather is with us. However, the shower activity can be very frustrating. Some areas have done very well with snow, but many areas are still green. Here in Hinstock snow has fallen from the sky but never settled, this I believe has been a similar picture for many areas in the Midlands. What we need is a nationwide snow event for everyone to enjoy. Let's hope February brings such a thing and the cold can be trapped in for us coldies. :-)
  4. Let's finish winter off with a cold month. 2.3 for me:-)
  5. Sorry make that 2 that's a 100% improvement!
  6. Just seen 1 snow flake fly post the lamp post......happy days! :-)
  7. Still overcast here in North Shropshire, hard frost forecast tonight so tomorrow should be a cold and frosty winters day. I've not given up yet on this winter and feel come the weekend of 24/25th January we will have snow on the ground across the midlands....well there's no harm in dreaming
  8. Snowing quite heavy now large flakes......it's on its way back down.
  9. Snowed for about an hour or so and then rain on and off for the last 90 minutes. Just did the lamp post check and rain now turning more sleety, hopefully it will turn to snow shortly!
  10. Big wet flakes falling now.
  11. Looking at the models, I cannot see any long term cold this year! I maybe totally wrong but the weather is set in a pattern that will take a lot to shift. I've just travelled back from Birmingham to Shropshire and the outside temperature is reading 13 degrees at 10pm!!......being a lover of cold weather this mild mush is driving me crazy!
  12. We are told we are now in a warming climate-but centuries ago there were warmer and colder periods sometimes over decades. Having experienced over 40 winters, more have been mild than cold. However, I feel we are now entering a period of more average to colder winters which in the next 20 years will provide us cold lovers with weather we look for during winter. The weather in the UK during December rarely delivers nationwide cold and snow, so at the moment I feel the conditions have been fairly typical. Come January and February I'm hopeful the winter will deliver cold and enough snow to build a snowman or two.
  13. I am a lover of cold and snowy winters. However, I'm afraid looking at the charts for the up coming 10 to 14 days and possibly beyond, I can see very little wintry weather for the majority of the UK. We are now in a dominate westerly wind direction which will keep the conditions fairly average for the rest of the month. Let's hope europe goes into the freezer fairly soon with cold from the east, then we will see a pattern change and the best chance of something more wintry in the UK come the new year .....This I feel will happen. To keep the faith, for centuries the true winter period starts December 21- so don't be fooled by any organisation that in recent times start the winter period December 1.
  14. Daniel, Thank you for the warm welcome and Yes! I have at last left the nest.
  15. Dancerwithwings Thanks for the big welcome, and yes I still lamp post watch. The wife and kids think I'm crazy leaving the outside lights on during the night when snow is predicted.
  16. Evening guys, Very first post after years of reading the topics on net weather, must say some very interesting posts and opinions. Me, I love the winters cold and the summers warm and dry. I have been a weather nut and a lover of cold winters since I can remember being a young boy. Back in those days during the 1970s, I remember as a small child on winter nights looking out of the window lamp post watching. I would be waiting for the first snow flake to fall when the weatherman on the bbc news at 9pm had predicted the rain to turn to snow. Happy days! I have been lucky to have experienced some cold winters in the 1970s and especially the winter of 81/82 and more recently 09/10. So what about this winter, well no science behind my thoughts only a general feeling I have each year, which over the years my wife lets me know I tend to get more right than wrong. This winter I feel will be a typical 1970s winter, 2 or more major nationwide snow events mixed in with mild incursions. More frost and fog and cold calm days where the sun shines and the frost stays in the ground. Living on an island we will still get the wet and windy periods. However, not the very wet winter of 13/14. I guess for cold lovers a better winter overall. So there we have it! I maybe completely wrong with my predictions but winters is coming and If you are like me? I can't wait to see the first snow flake fall.
