Yes, certainly a bit chilly!
Temperature -4.0, dew point -5.4.
Colder than any night in winter 2006-07 or 2007-08. And the coldest it's been in the past six years without there being snow on the ground.
And from the other perspective - of someone who really likes following the vicissitudes of our weather, but is hardly an expert - this is one of my favourite threads too. Many thanks for all the hard work and sharing your discoveries.
After fairly light rain this morning, more intense rain for the past 15 minutes. In fact, many people would say it's a foul afternoon. Only 10.8 degrees too.
Really odd and fascinating pattern of statistics - as if there were a trough between the latter part of the 19th century and the early 21st century. Not of course, that two observations make a trend - but nevertheless...
I suppose the tantalising question - probably never to be definitively answered - is how rainfall stats would have looked before the mid-18th century and if there is any evidence of very long waves.
Come now, there are still two summer months remaining.
And when has Britain ever had a reputation for fine, warm summers?
Having said that, the weather today is horrible.
I feel that if I had wanted to experience the 'summer' experience of the Outer Hebrides, I would have moved there long ago...
But I have to admit that the awfulness of this month is bizarrely fascinating.
Now down to 11.3C under persistent steady rain. Almost made it to 15C earlier...
When was the last time we had such a run of cold weather in a summer month?
Down in this part of London it rained heavily from about 9 pm yesterday evening on through much of the night. Now drizzle and 11.3. At the moment, not a breath of wind.
I cannot help but have memories of April 1981, when after a mild/warm spell the north/northeasterlies established themselves after mid-month, culminating in 4 inches of lying snow in Cheltenham on the 26th and nearly an ice day.
I certainly should - it's falling at a moderate rate now and all is now covered white, but not quite enough for snowballs yet. Here's hoping! Have fun in the meantime.
PS Amazing how your being two or three miles to the east can make such a difference. That's why I love the weather so much etc.
