Looks like we could be in for our first cold snap of the winter. From Wednesday evening things are set to turn much colder up here with wintry showers turning to snow on Thursday. That combined with strong winds could make things quite interesting, particularly on Friday when it looks like the showers could be more persistent and heavier. Not that its unusual to get snow in Shetland in October. We've had lying snow last week in October for 3 of the past 4 years now. The good news is that although it will last just 2-3 days looking further ahead it looks as if its set for a reload shortly afterwards! As usual will be regularly updating my website and Facebook page with details and pictures. The webcam on the web site might be worth having a look at! Today the Facebook page for my weather website has hit the 900 "likes" mark! https://www.facebook.com/pages/gulberwickweathercouk/313323595729 Never did I think this would prove to be so popular! Initially I set the FB page to help drive traffic to the website: http://gulberwickweather.co.uk/index.html But seems like I stumbled upon a real local need for weather infromation. Our only other weather station is Fair Isle which is something like 60 miles further south so the weather can be somewhat different to here. It seems folks really like having a really "local" weather station and it seems to have become an important local resource. I really knew I had "made it" when I got a mention in the local paper a couple of weeks back when we had horrendous rain and flash floods! Initially I started by just pointing people to the website and updating the page with a few bits and pieces. That has now grown to where I now do my own local forecasts - today, tomorrow and a 2 day outlook and issuing local weather warnings as and when required. I also post weather-related matters such as disruption to ferries, flights etc. The page is also linked to the a Twitter feed which uploads the latest conditions every 4 hours. In the future I'm looking to upgrade the site and perhaps start earning some money from it by way of advertising etc so who knows where it will lead!

Cancel that! Some sort of problem with the temp sensor. Temp is falling during showers but not as much as thought although the showers are of hail and blustery. I suspect interference to the wirelss signal. Sorry folks, false alarm. Got all excited there lol.

Friday 26th September 2012 - Weather And Chat
GulberwickWeather replied to The PIT's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Thought it was too good to be true, weather station has had some kind of brain-storm! Temp is falling quickly in showers but not as low as reported earlier. Currently 10.5C. Still blustery hail showers though and chilly in the wind. I suspect possible interference to the wireless signal. Bit of egg on ones face doesn't do anybody any harm lol -
Well we've had wintry showers here today! Temp is currently just 3C & the dew point is 2C. Bearing in mind thats during daylight, in September and it's from a SW'ly direction!

It certainly has been a while since I wrote in here. The last year has been a very busy one for me and it's meant I haven't spent anywhere near as much time on here as I used to. Work-wise I have now become as highly qualified as it is possible for an Operational Coastguard to be, having gone down to the Coastguard School in May and passed my Search And Rescue Mission Co-Ordinator certification (SMC). This is a very intense 10 day course and given that we are responsible for the safety of life it's right that it is. It now means that I am qualified to assume command and control of Search And Rescue (SAR) missions anywhere in UK waters. For a Coastguard it is a major achievement and involves an enormous amount of hard work and study so I think I can allow myself a small measure of pride in my achievement. Weather-wise I have been very busy getting my website and associated Facebook page up and running (you can find the links in my sig or on my profile). They have exceeded all my initial expectations. I set them up really as a hobby and didn't expect so many people to be interested but the website attracts thousands of visits per month and the Facebook page now has almost 900 likes! It seems to have become an important community resource. Along the way I have learned an enormous amount to the extent that I now do my own weather forecasts which people have now come to appreciate and indeed rely on. Now that things have generally settled down I'm hoping to spend a bit more time on NW so hopefully see you around in the near future Bob

Aye not many trees up here due to the wind and poor soil. But yes parts of Shetland were once covered in trees, the northern isles like Unst in particular but the Vikings made short work of them for boats!

Ya there were several peat slides. One just up the road from here at a village called Quarff. Came down the hillside, split into two, almost took out several houses and stopped just short of the road. Another at a village called Sundibanks left huge boulders strewn all over the road and cut the village off! Trouble is the soil up here is mainly peat, but its not very deep in places with very slippery rock not far below the surface. As soon as we get major rain the whole lot can start moving. we had a similar problem a few years back when a sudden downpour caused several slides which nearly took out several houses and the local school at Sandwick and cut the main road in several places.

Where I live is approx 5 miles south of Lerwick and we got by far the worst of it here. At one point the main road to Sumburgh airport (about 1 mile from my house - the road I mean not Sumburgh Airport!) was under 3 feet of water and the Police well telling people not to drive anywhere! First thing this morning my garden was like a lake and the bend in the road at the bottom of the hill was under water. Just up the road there is a burn which runs under a culvert in the road just before the Kirk, that part of the road is on a slope and yet it was under a torrent of water crossing it where the burn had burst its banks. I've never seen so much rain in all my life! Incidentally its still raining and we're up to 87.8mm now!
