  1. Favourite Snow events for each month: January: I can't choose one particular event but my favourites occured around late nineties and early naughties and 2010 February: I remember an exceptional snow event in 2001. Feb 2009 was also decent March: Without a doubt 2006. My largest snowfall April: Snow showers in 2007 May: Snow showers in 2010 November: The great snowfall of 2010 December: December 2010 and 2009 had brilliant snowfalls though I have good memories of cold and good snowfall in 1999/2000 and 2001.
  2. I'm not sure why he is going. I think it's to do with the Met Office. I quite liked his forecasts during cold spells (I guess he likes the cold weather). Sky Weather has replaced most of their forecasters with an incompanent lady who seems to have been taken off the street to do forecast.
  3. I assume Scotland should have a half decent CET. If we can get a good cold spell in February, Scotland's Overall Winter CET should be pretty good.
  4. It will be interesting to see how many members will be way below the final CET.
  5. How low a CET to more or less confirm this winter is colder than the last.

  7. What ever you do, don't say the winter is over. We have got more than two months of winter and I think we have had the biggest freeze of the winter as the rock landed in the pond (atlantic) sending waves of cold to our shores and throughout the winter ripples of cold weather will come to our shore. The models are suggesting the idea of high pressure which would keep temperatures on the cool side and some charts and synoptics are indicating either an easterly or for the high pressure to move westwards to allow nothern blocking and cold air to flood down from the Artirc. This winter ain't over. Even the great winters of the past have had mild spells. Besides, we have had a great winter already.
  8. Okay here is the picture before 9am. Lying Snow at 6am: Lerwick - 16cm Kirkwall - 15cm Aberdeen - 15cm Dunkeswell Aerodr - 14cm Wick - 13cm Castlederg - 12cm Redesdale Camp - 12cm Cottesmore - 12cm Sennybridge - 11cm Bridlington - 11cm Lough Fea - 10cm Loftus Samos - 10cm Belfast Aldergrove - 9cm Eskdalemuir - 9cm Boulmer - 9cm Hereford - 7cm Andrewsfield - 7cm Edinburgh - 7cm Bingley - 6cm Skye - 6cm Glasgow - 6cm Benson - 5cm Filton - 5cm Stornoway - 5cm Ronaldsway - 5cm St Athan - 5cm Wittering - 5cm Coleshill - 4cm Prestwick - 4cm Middle Wallop - 3cm Yeovilton - 3cm Leeming - 3cm Lyneham - 3cm Spadeadam - 3cm Herstmonceux - 2cm Marham - 2cm Odiham - 2cm Wattisham - 2cm London - 1cm 39 weather stations at least with snow (remember Aviemore and co have lying snow). Falling Snow so Far: Aviemore Tulloch Bridge Wick Aberdeen Kinloss Glasgow Tiree (Sleet) Edinburgh Eskdalemuir Castlederg Trawsgoed Pershore
  9. I think later in the day, the met office will publish something. Anyway, it has definatley snowed in Glasgow and Edinburgh and I would not be surprised to see it reach nothern England. It looks like snow has been reported in Castlederg and Trawsgeod.
  10. Just had a look outside and I found a fresh covering of snow on my car. With lying snow and falling snow it's another white christmas.
  11. Well it was only a few days ago and it looked increasingly unlikely for a white christmas and here we are on Christmas Eve with a further 10 cm of snow expected for Western Scotland on the Big Day before spreading south eastwards (maybe reaching the north of England). You can post if it has been snowing in your location or the troubles lying snow has caused. It looks like many areas will see lying snow on Xmas morning but that would not count as a white christmas (personally I believe lying snow and/or falling snow is a white christmas). Merry Christmas.
  12. That's very low. For that to happen you would need a very potent cold spell. If that were to happen we would have a classic winter on the cards.
  13. Just thought I would start this. I've heard over in the Weather Outlook that Nothern Blocking could happen again in January. I'm going for a cold month but nothing spectacular. 2.7c
  14. I think Positive Weather Solutions are insane for saying a White Christmas is certain. I bet it won't happen and instead everywhere in the UK has a green christmas, gale force winds, pouring with rain and 8c temperatures. By the looks of things, the Atlantic will arrive on the 23rd. Unless high pressure holds on or a Scandi high develops, I see this being a disaster for PWS. Also, the gullible newspapers think this blast will cover the whole UK. They also are more excited about this one than the last blast. I only think remote, exposed areas of the UK will get any lying snow on Christmas Day. I doubt it that it will be a Widespread event and even here in Glasgow I feel I might miss out on this one. Perhaps we might get more snow when the Atlantic arrives and melts it all again.
  15. I think there is a good chance of a white christmas. The models underestimate cold, so I expect the cold to last past christmas.
  16. It looks like today, the Big Freeze has come to an end across the United Kingdom. With more than two weeks of excitement with watching radar and lamposts and checking temperatures nationwide, this snow/severe winter event has certainly been memroable. For snowfall and even temperature for my location, this cold snap has probably beaten last years, however having lying snow with the clear skies during the Christmas and New Year period was perfect. The first snowfall which fell in my area came on Friday the 26th November and what a snowfall it was. It brought 5-10cm of lying snow, however it was one of the best blizzards I have ever seen (almost on the same level as those in the early 00s and late 90s). Easterlies consistently brought snowfall right up to Wednesday/Thursday the 1st/2nd of December. A totall of 15 days of lying snow and 11 days of falling snowfall. Maximum snow depth was 25cm between Monday 6th December and Thursday the 8th. Lowest minimum was about -14/-15c on Tuesday and Wednesday night. So in terms of snowfall, how has the period been for you and where does it rank. For me, I have many favourite snow event; some short lived, some not, however this year's big freeze and December and January last year would top the table. March 2006 was the deepest snow event. Temperature wise, this was colder than all of last winter.
  17. Hi all and I'd like to know what caused White Christmases in past years and how did it reflect on the winter. i.e what caused the White Christmas of 2004 and 2000 and did the snow cover last long?
  18. Looking at one chart, it looks like the mild weather will return for christmas
  19. So overall, is a white christmas still likely.
  20. From http://ukweather.wordpress.com/christmas-2010/ Christmas Forecast Issue 3 (04th December Update) Current indications suggest an increased chance of snowfall this Christmas. Northern Blocking looks likely to take hold from Mid-Month onwards and this suggests bitterly cold air will flood across the United Kingdom. The Northern Blocking looks increasingly likely to last through Christmas and perhaps beyond, bringing very cold temperatures for the Christmas period and some snowfall, particularly across Northern and Eastern Scotland. North – 65% West – 35% East – 65% South – 35%
  21. Met Office still going for cold december and netweather xmas forecast is looking good.
  22. How about 3.1c I am predicting a cold - very cold start to the month. Around the 4th I expect slightly less cold conditions. From around 8th -16th or something - I expect wet and milder conditions Christmas Time - Colder and possibly very cold New Year Time - Getting colder.
  23. Hi there. It would be great if everyone could post their snow depths here on this page, with the location and time (ie. 20cm, Dyce near Aberdeen, North East Scotland at 11.30). Here it's around 17cm, Torrance, north of Glasgow, Central Scotland, 10.00.
  24. Looks like some funny weather is on its way. The Big Freeze will end next Weekend and there will be battles between Cold air and the Atlantic from about the 6th-18th or so in December. I think there is a good chance of snow on Christmas and perhaps another Big Freeze.
