We're going to get a covering here which is the last thing I expected when it started raining this afternoon. It's so heavy even the wet ground won't stop it.
It just has done! Huge bolt of lightning and a proper downpour within the last 20 mins, but fizzled out alarmingly quickly. Still, that's three thunderstorms in October, putting this month in second place behind July.
I can back this up - the 1415BST display only shows about 3 or 4 strikes within six/seven miles of here while to my knowledge there had been at least 10 by then.
EDIT - All of them now popped up on the 1430 run.
Quite a bit of activity here, must be on 15 claps of thunder from this latest cell already. Building up to the north after what looked like an end to the storms an hour ago with sharp blue sky to the west.
Surprised not to have anyone else reporting from the Manchester area by the way.
Lightning within half a mile (2 second wait for the thunder) and pelting down, has been for 15 minutes. Make that two strikes now. Rain easing off in the last minute.
Can't believe I gave up on this earlier when it turned sleety. This is the best since Dec 2010 here and shows no sign of stopping either. It deserves better than to be washed away tomorrow night.
It's making that rattling sound you get when snow falls in heavy showers on a NW wind.
Just noticed the purple area on the radar east of Chester coming this way!
Looks like it's starting to get lighter around here, flakes not as big as earlier, and melting off some roofs. At least there was a bit of a cover (only 4 or 5 mm though).
Tiny flurries on and off here for the last ten minutes or so.
However the Met Office 5 day has downgraded Manchester's snow to tomorrow evening only, dying out by midnight...
