  1. Not sure this can be called a storm but at 4.15 it went very black and clouds were boiling. Massive downdraft chucked all the garden furniture round - trees bending etc. Only lasted about 15 seconds but very scary (gust recorded at 47mph) Temperature dropped from 29 to 20 in the space of 3 minutes. Torrential rain and windy (25mph?) for about 10 minutes - garden totally flooded and about 3" in the road - then lighter rain for about half an hour. Faint rumble of thunder and no lightning. Beautifully fresh for a while but getting warmer now and sun coming out. What a waste of water it's all gone down the drains

  2. I've just had to tip a bucket of rain water down the drain, I need it to change the aquarium water. The 45gal water butt is full and the garden is leached out. Pity I can't sell it really.

That rain progged for Monday overnight Tuesday, is now reducing on the 12z gfs precip chart and shifting away from the south, more towards the middle and north. Then it intensifies in the North sea, after it's shot over us. post-4119-1152465264.png

Send your spare water over here mate!

  3. have a whip round, that would be helpful.

im a horticultural technition, (i cut grass) after a cold spring when i lost a whole 2 weeks work due to the late start, the last thing i want is a drought this summer... heat and storms please!!!

i see no useful rain until at least the breakdown of the next hot spell...

Can only sympathise - we have had absolutely no rain here (not even from a passing thunderstorm this week). The garden (which is huge) is dying on its feet! I've given up watering - on a water meter! Trees are beginning to turn gold. Was hoping for at least an hour or two last night but it wasn't to be. As for cutting the grass - what grass??

  4. Hey guys and gals eat yer hearts out. Just had a thunderstorm pop up out of nowhere. Thunder very loud for about 10 minutes - a clap every 30 seconds. Lightening, very gusty winds but no rain. Approached suddenly from the West - now back to blue skies but looks like another one on the way.

  5. While we all take a quick break and check things out ,anyone got an inkling as to what Phillipe is up to? This morning he was to dissipate, now he's looped himself heading WNW. East side US on alert next?

Yeh this is really weird. Phillipe seemed to be on course towards Ireland for Tuesday and it now seems to have turned round. I saw a comment somewhere on the NOAA site that it's doing its thing near Bermuda - or have I got this completely wrong. If Phillipe isn't coming our way what's the big depression off NW Scotland/Eire at the beginning of next week on the METO fax?

  6. Yup can confirm - got woken up at 4.00am - thunder, lightening, torrential rain 10 miles from King's Lynn. Very surprised - thought I was dreaming when I heard the thunder - kicked the other half - thought it was him snoring. Don't know where that came from - wasn't forecasted at all

  7. What a change!!!

The heavens have opened - driving rain and possibly hail. A rumble of thunder in the distance but now very light winds.

    Temp.  18.3C

    Wind.    4MPH - SE

    Day's Rain  6.5mm

    You don't say where :)

  8. hi folks

Thanks to those who have already 'had a go'. Hope fully more will join in. It could do two things.

    1) Make people more away of how good GFS is, and also problems it has after about T+120.

    2) Increase the understanding all of us have as we share comments about GFS.

My time with GFS is well documented at checks with GFS to T+168. Its showing signs, no more than that, at the moment, of getting more accurate beyond the T+120 mark.

One thing I thought of trying, but I need to wait for Paul to come back, is to have a forecast for, let's say T+168 hours, or beyond, for a particular spot in the UK? Somewhere with accurate weather observations to use as a check. Might be Edinboro', or Belfast, London etc??

    regards

    John

Good idea, I suggested something similar to Paul via the "new ideas" thread
