Wish work was cancelled today, I think I would have made a trip down to Brecon Beacons.

Red warning for you guys, wow. Enjoy - from a pathetically snowless Midlands.

Yes mate, remember we are slightly further north than you, we have probably had a bit more of the coverage and got a few direct hits from showers yesterday.
Yep, looking at the southern edge of that more intense band that is just covering you, it will be missing me in work (SE Lichfield) by about 1-2 miles, you couldn't make it up.

Ditto Staffordshire, not settling here for some reason despite mod snow, almost like its evaporating before it hits the ground.
Yep, I really do give up, we must be inside the only triangle in the UK not to get more than a dusting.

Very odd looking radar but the snow actually continues to just get heavier. 5CM's now easily, moderate snow falling. Where has this come from? It's like we have built a mini stationary low over us. Just goes to show, if winds had stayed due E all throughout the week, we would have seen far more convective snow.
You have 5cm!! Nothing more than a dusting here, the grass isn't even covered properly.

Could someone help me understand why the radar shows that ppn seems to be forming over land and not over the North Sea?

Pretty much - it's ironic that normally our best snow bringer is the 'slider' and even this weekends 'low' looks like missing us marginally, it's the kind of thing that makes you want to give up really isn't it?
You're right, but I'm hoping to get out more this summer to catch some storms.
i guess this is why it's good to also have other hobbies though!

At this point, I'd rather it was stranded in Scotland - I'd much sooner it be completely off the table than so agonisingly close that it's just a frustration.
Apart from, if you were in Scotland, you'd probably be under a foot of snow too.
i would love to see a complete accumulation chart for this week, I would imagine there is about a 30m high, 50mike wide rectangle over us that will end up snowless.
snow all across the east, snow from the polar low in the NW, plenty of snow in Ireland today and more over the next 2 days, and snow in the SE tomorrow.

This line of showers, is stuck about as 50% in the middle of your house and my house as possible.
It's literally within touching distance of me, but just won't build south or drop south enough and so again, somewhere 5 miles away is going to get a couple of inches from being under that, whilst it's cold and dry here. Snow cover will be gone by 8am when the sun is up.
Frustrating doesn't even cut tomorrow's event at all. It's going to stall 10-20 miles south and west of us, more like 30-40 for you.
That just about sums it up, it will be so frustratingly close, but no cigar, not even a drag of it.

That wash streamer looks to miss me to the North, reallllyyyyy not been my day hahaha, oh well, I've given up with this spell I think
-
Not at all convinced still, I think it's going to be a matter of 20 miles or so, much like Dec 11th (I think), the heavier stuff stayed south of about Aldridge, very painful.

Interesting hirlam.

Generally the weather systems (especially North America) are much larger in scale. They have gained energy and strength over the entire pacific ocean before hitting east coast america, which is why precipitation has no problem getting many hundreds of miles in land.
As for France, I guess the same story, just they are generally affected by bigger systems ?Ofcourse when it comes to snow, the rain has no issues getting into the midlands...
Why would the systems be any bigger in France though? That area of rain posted by weirpig actually looks quite small.

I have a question you or someone else may be able to help me with. Why does ppn struggle so much to maintain intensity over the British Isles? Look at that PPN inland in France, why does that not die off as soon as it comes inland? Same in the US/Canada, they can have frontal systems travelling over land that maintain intensity but they just seem to die off as soon as they come over land in the UK?

What sort of totals have you guys got thus far, before the red warning has came into play?

To be fair mate I work for Sids taxis around the area, quite strange how I get see quite a good covering in Newcastle sometimes and yet get home to Talke and it's clear. Although that pic just was from Home in Talke / Butt Lane. Kind of on the Staffs / Cheshire border, with Alsager 5 mins away.
@MattStoke hmm that could be why then, maybe out of town it has stuck better?
-
Hello all, just a request from some of us a bit snow starved down here in the w-mids... maybe some of you guys could create a time lapse of the snow for this evening/overnight?
Set up a camera which takes a photo every 10 minutes or so? It would be great to see the accumulation rates in the red area!

It's been cloudy all morning, it's way below 0, it's been snowing all morning, heavy at times and still it can't settle. May be the sun but it's funny that other areas having persistent snow and cloud cover don't seem to be the same.
Hmm that is very strange Matt. 'andypvfc' just posted a photo of snow which seem to have given a good covering in Stoke?

White out in the last half hour, all white over. Another shower following but it looks bleak on radar thereafter.
Yeah, I caught the very southerly tip of that which gave a covering but is melting away already...
-
Also, winds seem to be veering back E/NE'ly so that the clump of showers currently over East Anglia will miss us to the south.
It is actually unbelievable how bad our luck has been with the wind directions + showers the past couple of days.
-
Bone dry here, maybe a shower incoming in a bit (from Leicester) but it looks like it will miss me to the North.

Yep, a world away from what we have here. Thoroughly disappointing. Roll on spring I say!
