Not quite accurate, but they're fairly big lightning rods! (but not designed as such!)

Now a derecho is a real humdinger. But they need to travel 200 miles (am I correct?) to be classed as one.

Would the MO ever release a tornado warning if the conditions occurred?

Morning all, Can I call today Day 1 of EL APOCALYPTO? -
Storm and convective discussion 7th July Onwards

Just had a look at the jet forecast - don't think there's much shear available, so any tornadic potential in these storms look limited. Straight line winds only it seems. -

What is the current jet stream / wind shear forecast? Obviously that will have a big factor in the type and power of these storms. -
My apologies, however CAPE values in the 2000s+ are unlikely to materialise, especially in the areas predicted. That is not far from being "off the charts"; conditions that would spawn a severe thunderstorm outbreak and possibly strong tornadic activity. Having just been on the other side of the world (and "fortunate" enough to have had a tornado warning) in conditions are far more likely, its still extremely hard to pin down severity until about 24-48 hours before and even then there are downgrades. That said, values around half that would provide quite a lively light show anyway.

That is something I've never seen before. Not sure how they can predict something like that though. -

Well I've just lost my TV signal... something imminent? Within 5 seconds I get lightning! -

In comparison, the 'derecho' storm that hit the Midwest USA last week produced only 13,000 in a longer timescale, across a similar area. -
Convective/Storm Discussion for 06/0614 - 07-06-14
Dan the Man replied to A.J's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Dont think theres any tornadic potential with this? No shear just straight line (probably damaging) winds and large hail, caused by the jet. -
That same dangerous bow echo that started in Denver, has now travelled 1000 miles - now down in N Alabama. Incredible.
-
My area had a tornado warning about 3:30 today - quite a surreal situation, something I've never experienced before. The eventual funnel hit a school about 15 miles away.

1300 strikes of lightning so far in the severe t-storm warning area.

Just watching TWC's coverage - Omaha is totally hidden in a wall cloud.
-
Omaha NE is probably not a bad place to be. CAPE going off the charts, around 1500-3000. TORCON of a SEVEN. Wow. Seriously dangerous day ahead - stay safe folks.
-
"Significant" tornadic activity for the Midwest tomorrow
-
Looks like a severe outbreak to hit the Midwest around Sunday onwards - steadily moving eastwards across the early part of next week. Detail still a bit patchy however.
-
Tornado warning for SW of the Houston Metro area.

Dan the Man replied to Paul Sherman's topic in Storm Chase USA
Sunday-Monday onwards, looks to be the next 'severe' event after today.
