  1. Something seems to be building out of the shower over me in Chorley, skies gone dark but just light rain so far. Can see it approaching. Maybe a few rumbles to come as it seemed to just develop out of nothing moving north
  2. Well guys, WHAT A NIGHT!! In my 21 years I don't think i've seen an evening like it. I had almost written today off until I was in Southport around 9:30pm as the first cell just exploded out of nothing. that passed and began to move out of range so decided to head back towards Leyland way, and en route found a lay-by which had a total 360* perfectly flat view over the fields and what a show it was. There were the two main cells to the East over Bolton and south Manchester we had a perfect view of - Frequent CC lightning at first as they were still developing but then we began getting more CG's which looked absolutely stunning, accompanied by the constant rumbling in the distance which I've only ever heard of from videos and people in America. We began to see some very clear CGs from behind our position, due South and these began to get more frequent until she arrived with multiple CGs striking within 100m or so of our location, I've never heard sound like it! It seemed to become increasingly hot and humid in the clear skies behind and the temps have stayed at the 17-18*C mark (Only moving car temps, not very accurate I know). What are the chances of more explosive development over this region of Lancashire overnight? Or have we had our lot for now? I'm very new to all the scientific side of this and don't know what to look for on the charts etc! Regards, Jordan
  3. Explosive development I'm watching from near Leyland, frequent lightning, beautiful!
  4. Hi guys, I'm up north in Lancashire and have got Tues and Weds off this week as its the first signs of summer kicking in and I want to make the most of it. I'm wanting to go away somewhere for a couple of days where its a nice area to spend a couple of days, with also a likely chance of seeing some storms on the Wednesday. Nice roads like lake district would be an added bonus as i'm quite the petrol head and love my drives in the sun. I don't want to go hours and hours like essex/kent etc as its too far, but where do people predict the best temps and best storms are going to kick off? Regards, Jordan
  5. No problem, I thought it would be something out of your control. Cheers for the update
  6. Hey guys, not one for posting stuff like these but i was following a storm approaching on my PC and was planning on going out chasing as it was local, but the radar hasn't updated since and that was 40 minutes or so ago and subsequently the storm passed not far away but I couldn't track its position. Is there an issue with the radar currently? Cheers, Jordan
  7. That's brilliant, I didn't know that feature existed!! Happy days!
  8. I went chasing the second small cell after missing the first due to my tea being cooked ( :-( ) but I made a good guess and followed the core of the second cell from the M6 over to Bolton, about 10+ miles or so. Torrential rain and lightning right overhead, both CC and CG with some very nice thunder rumbles. Gutted I missed the first cell, seemed like the best one around all day, but after missing every single storm thats passed over the North West/Lancashire in the past few days, I wasn't going to miss the opportunity; So glad I got an intercept into the last cell of development for what's probably going to be a disappointing rest of the year. On a side note, I could hear the constant rumbles and see occasional lightning even from my house about 15 miles away near Chorley on that first "mega-cell"!
  9. Evening chaps, Ive been interested in weather for a long time, but I'm quite new to the storm tracking on the weather radars etc. The best storm I can remember (being only 20) was about 3 or 4 years ago when we had a long-lived storm for 2 or 3 hours but I wasn't aware of weather radars etc at the time. I'd love to be able to look back and understand what the setup and how the system developed from the south. Im not sure on the dates as I type this, but I will be able to find out as we had relatives over for a special occasion on the same evening, so i'd be able to look back. But I thought i'd ask if its even possible first!! Thanks for your time, Jordan
  10. Couple of small cells moving north east near liverpool, Can't see them gaining much strength as the 3PM storm to our west dropped the temp by 7 or 8 degrees thus not giving these new cells much power. Heard a distant rumble but looks like its dying off again before passing to the west of me again. Dammit!
  11. Big lively storm passing over Preston, just missed me in Euxton to the west by about 5 miles. Only light rain and distant rumbles, but frequent lightning and very agressive looking wall cloud. Pretty looking thing! Just waiting for one more to pop up to the east of where that developed so we get a direct hit!!
  12. Anyone know where to get a tally of how many strikes over northern mainland Europe? Like netweather can get 24 hours, shows you the path and how many strikes. I saw a post somewhere earlier that had a tally over 100,000 strikes for the german cell earlier today, wonder what the total would be if you add all the other storms into the mix!?
  13. It is a great shame to see so much devastation R.I.P to those who lost their lives and those who have encountered property damage etc. I amm amazed this storm caused so much damage! One of my friends showed me this the other day, Its probably not to everyones tastes as it can seem quite harsh but it is pretty funny. THIS IS NOT MY PAGE I accept no responsibilty for what is said and if anyone finds offensive, I am just trying to lighten up the mood slightly. https://twitter.com/realsandycane I'v heard that it is unlikely to affect much of the weather in the UK whch I am both glad and gutted about. Glad it will not cause any more damage, but I am bored of it just being cold, cloudy with the occasional outburst or light rain around here at the moment! Keep safe everyone!
  14. looks like one hell of a cell down south! Newbury and Basingstoke need to batten down the hatches!!
  15. I agree it is unusual to be this warm with overcast skies, but it doesn't feel very energised, just a bit muggy, although the breeze is pretty fresh!
  16. A bit of heavy rain now on us in southern Lancashire, but nothing us northern folk are unfamiliar with... its just feels like a warmer November rainy day! Would be nice if we got a nice storm, but I feel it is unlikely for the NW... just doesn't seem like the right conditions here...
  17. What's the outlook for north-west england? Preston area? Been extremely quiet this year (apart from the large storm in the Irish sea and over Southport & Blackpool a couple of days ago) Im fancying a decent day of exitement!
  18. Just had a gander at that BBC footage... It says the tornado in Sleaford was a couple of weeks prior to this major supercell? I thought it was to do with the same storm system on the sae day! Or am I getting confused here? I didn't hear of any other major storms capable of putting a twister on the ground that size in weeks before the 28th! Any ideas?
  19. Great idea, lets hope we get a set up like Thursday some time soon! Lancashires a bit dry in the UK storm region so looks like i'm going to have to use some petrol when anything kicks off!
  20. This 'cylindrical object' people are seeing... Could this not simply be a commercial airliner at cruise altitude or climbing? I know weather conditions havent been right for contrails the last few days so they just look like silver dots when you catch a glympse of one. You might be able to find it at http://www.flightradar24.com using the 'playback' feature (can choose time and date) Wish I heard something, nothing ever seems to happen in NW england or Lancashire to be more precise!
