  1. Thanks SS. Greyish tornado shaped cloud formed from the trailing end of cloud. Looked like a tornado - very dark but well defined cloud base. Only visible for about 2 or 3 mins then my view was lost behind a sheet of rain. We are not located in an area where there are frequent storms although there have been some confirmed tornados in the last 5 years.
  2. Hi Everyone, Spotted what looked like a funnel cloud decending from a CB base in my area today at 15:25. Unfortunately didnt have my digital camera. Location between Alton Towers and Waterhouses - A53 between Leek and Ashbourne. Is there any way I can find out if this was an FC?
  3. Sorry about another late post for 3 march. Light snow showers and snow pellets throughout the day here. Still some snow patches but now less than 15% snow cover - continuing slow thaw under sunny spells 4 March. 2cm of fresh snow overnight and light snow falling at 6am. Turned to heavy rain at 7.30am with a rise of temp to 2c by 8am - and then a rapid thaw. Obs at 10am - temp is 4c still some snow laying and we have had 3 fairly sharp hail showers in the last 15 mins. Wind NW at 12 kts mostly
  4. Another 2cm of snow overnight and some light snow falling on and off. Sky is fairly clear and the laying snow is already beginning to melt. Northerly wind at 8-12kts making it feel really bitter
  5. Heavy snow here this morning between 7am and 9.30am gave 2cm of fresh snow. This followed snow and hail showers during yesterday evening (28 Feb)which resulted in a dusting but not on road surfaces. Since 10.30am today the sun has been to work and finally has melted all but the largest snowdrifts from last week. Some convective cloud to the north and north east suggest maybe some sleet and snow showers later - very lttle wind and slow cloud drift down from the north. Temp is currently 3c
  6. Sorry about the late post. Reports for 25 feb- snow on and off throughout the day still 4cm of thawing snow laying 26 feb - more light snow flurries during the day, snow still laying but now not total cover. 27 feb - thaw continued and only snow patches left - just two light snow flurries 28 Feb - light snow overnight left a dusting temp at 9am was minus 3c minimum overnight down to minus 6c - the lowest we have recorded during this winter. Total cloud cover of stratocumulus so perhaps some more light flurries to come.
  7. At 17:15 Temp is 0.0c Wind NE about 15kts Total cloud cover Nimbostratus Continuous snow all day - mostly light for the last hour Snow has continued to thaw - and is very wet but still about 7cm on the grass. Roads around Ashbourne are clear and the snow is now too wet to drift - expcept much higher up - check out the reports by Terminal Moriane
  8. Roads are all clear in southern parts of peak district - staffordshire moorlands etc - only minor roads are affected - mostly where a plough has taken off the snow layer to about 1cm and it has frozen. Wind is picking up here so watch out for some drifting snow off the fields especially gateways and breaks in the stone walling along the roadsides. Hope this is of some use
  9. Overnight we have had 7cm of fresh snow. Added to 3cm remaining from yesterday. In the last hour the temp has risen to 0.1c - although we have continuous light snow - there is some evidence that snow on the trees etc is now starting to melt as the wind speed increases from East North East at 10 to 15kts. Some of my kit is down at present but it looks like the humidity is high and as a result a thaw is setting in.
  10. Obs at 17.00 today Temp minus 1.5c Wind East 12 kts. Total cloud cover with heavy snow showers. Accumulated snowfall is now 7cm from heavy snow showers throughout the day. Some drifting of powder snow is starting, although roads here mostly clear.
  11. First snow shower here since 9 am this morning. Light NE wind and increasing low cloud. Temp is 1c Snow showers overnight gave 2cm of lying snow most is still around but thawing whenever the sun appears.
  12. Sorry about the delay in posting these reports. 19 Feb - overnight snow pellets left a dusting early in the morning - melted away by 10.00am 21 Feb - 14.29 - quite heavy snow showers at present temp is 2c - giving temporary coverings until the sun melts it during breaks between the showers There is a steady increase in the shower cloud cover and cloud depth - showers have become increasingly heavy during the last 2 hours. Wind is light and variable between North and North East.
  13. Overnight down to minus 5c here and there was a dusting of snow grains sometime during the night. Clear blue sky since dawn, virtually no wind temp is 1c
  14. Snow showers - light mostly here today. Slight covering on the grass early this morning. Sleet and hail showers yesterday afternoon 12th Feb Now just cold and windy
  15. Sorry the posting is late. I can confirm we had 3 light snow showers between 1.30 and 3pm on 26 jan. Late afternoon there was further light sleet which gradually turned to drizzle during the evening.
  16. Good morning Light snow showers with a light dusting on the ground Wind Northerly 5kts Press: 1028mb Mostly cloudy with stratocumulus - so not much chance of heavier snow at present. Temp is minus 1.2c
  17. Good morning and what a night's weather here in the southern peak district. Temp is 8c and has been since 8am. Infrequent drizzle showers. Broken cloud and a severe westely gale. I have no accurate speeds as my kit is damaged. I would estimate from looking at damage around the village that last hight we experienced wind gusts of around 60kts or above and still around 45 -50kts. Apart from the usual casualties of roof tiles, greenhouses, fences and gates; we have one road blocked by a fallen tree with approx 2 foot diameter trunk. I have counted at least 6 other trees down or partly uprooted. All the trees were perfectly healthy and not dead or rotted. Talking to some local villagers - they tell me it is the worst gale in the last 10 years - not many have had an unbroken nights sleep.
  18. Obs at 11.25am Wind south west gusting at 20 kts Sky mostly obscured by falling snow. Second shower today - with a dusting on the ground already. and looks darker to the west. temp is 1.1c Ground is dry and partly frozen form last nights frost and light cover of snow so any more should settle quickly if enough falls.
  19. Good morning all, Weather obs - Bright 50% cloud cover - cumulus and cumulonimbus Wet snow and hail shower passed through at 10.10am with west wind gusting at about 40 kts. Temp is 3.7c at 11:00 Press 1000mb steady Visibility over 20kms Strong gales overnight but not much damage - mostly branches down and one cottage with roof slate dislodged. We are near TM and as such experience winter gales often - anything susceptible is damaged - trees etc - so it always appears a bit of a non event.
  20. Wintry showers finally faded yesterday. Sleet and wet snow gradually truned to sleet and hail then rain and sleet - last shower yesterday at 5pm. Much milder today so that looks like it for a while. Great to see the snow lying from 25 Dec to early yesterday (28 Dec). This morning the final bits of ice sheet on our stream and pond have melted.
  21. At 9.50am Hail and wet snow at about 6am this morning has left a layer of slush on roofs and grass. Ice on roads and pavements. Temp is 1.5c Lots of low cumulus driven on West wind about 5kts Wintry shower to the south of here at present
  22. Good morning Sky clear Pressure 996mb rising Wind variable 1-3kts Minimum last night was minus 5.0c Temp at 11:53 minus 0.5c We have 4cm of lying snow from 3 hours of snow showers yesterday evening, Yipee - but not quite enough for sledging!
  23. Merry Christmas to everyone Temp is minus 1c Light snow shower at 9.00am from very thin clouds!! Lasted 5 mins and gave a dusting. Loads of cumulus and cumulonimbus to the west and north - Cheshire, North Staffordshire so maybe some more to come
  24. Overcast and becoming increasingly dark too. Moderate rain falling - started about 30mins ago. Wind W 12kts Pressure 988mb falling fast Temp is 4.8c
  25. Looks like thats all the snow fall for here. Temp is minus 0.5c Wind is west 3-8kts Total cloud cover 3cm of lying snow - not thawing at present (So much for my earlier prediction of sleet rather than snow - I will need more practice at this game!)
