I make last night's storm the 17th "Thunder day" this year in Twickenham!
-
First cell just about passed, next hot on its heels to the SSW look thoroughly evil!

-
Biblical rain now so can't hear thunder!
-
Multiple lightning strikes to my south!
-
Mix of rain, soft hail and perhaps a hint of sleet here in S.W London.
-
All too brief but at its peak reminded me me of being in Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan...
-
Can't tell if it's thunder or just the planes to heathrow. But lightning lit up sky towards twickenham area.
Yes had 3 big flashes here in Twick now.

I lightning strike that I saw here in Twickehnam. That's the 5th thunder day here in January. Must be some sort of record?
-
Not sure I trust their updates - eg for here they say we received 30 cm on 25/26 - when we actually got nearer 45cm at 1200m (hand measured at various intervals during the day!) and a lot more higher up the mountain!
That is quite a margin of error.
I have my concerns too but to be fair, given the huge number of resorts they cover, it's a pretty good info service for your average skier. Snowfall totals are an inexact science at the best of times, but the way they are published in Europe (as compared to N.America) is particularly haphazard. Over there, at least it is fairly clear what time frame you are looking at - new snow in 24hrs, new snow in last 7 days. Here, many resorts just give you a rough estimate from the last storm which may mean one day or, if it suits, may mean 2 or more. This is the sort of info the Ski Club have to rely on as there is no culture of consistency and official bodies like Meteo France, SLF a) don't cover all ski resorts and b) don't easily give up their information. One of the few public sources of properly measured snowfall is on the Swiss SLF site but it takes experience (and geekiness!) to read between the lines - i.e work out exactly which figure relates to what resort (if any) and at what altitude etc!

Yep, encouraging start to the Alpine season, though not quite as outstanding as some sectors of the ski press would have you believe! Very difficult to gauge intensity and distribution of snow this week but beginning in western Italian Alps tonight & tomorrow then other areas coming into play as the week progresses.

I'll be doing an update on my site shortly but as expected there has been a lot of snow at altitude across the Alps overnight. Milder today with the rain/snow limit around 2300m in the western Alps, still 1500m (roughly) in the eastern Alps but rising.
-
As other have said some snowfall across the Alps above 1800m or so.
At the current designated resort, Alpe D'Heux moderate snowfalls as shown on today's webcam.
It will be interesting to see how much of this week snow lasts given the forecast rise in temps, certainly the snowline will retreat up the mountians, but some of the snow is likely to stay.
Hi, yes, lots of snow falling across the Alps again tonight, particularly in the north but with warmer air edging in the rain/snow limit (currently between 1100-1400m) will rise to 2000 or higher by Wednesday morning. More snow is likely at the weekend but any falls to lower levels will again be temporary. Whatever the case, an impressive base is starting to form at high altitude particularly in the west.

Hi Everyone, as things are starting to get interesting in the Alps I am now updating daily on www.weathertoski.co.uk and hope to contribute more to this thread this season. Back soon!
-
Snowing very lightly here still
-
A few tiny flakes in the air here.
-
Snow suddenly turned heavier after hours of snizzle!
-
Moderate snow here but now settling on cars, grass etc.
-
Moderate snow in Twickenham. Not settling yet.
-
Mixture of rain and small ice pellets starting here!
-
Just had a nice hail shower
-
Just had our first snow shower here - mostly pellets.
-
Some straw clutching for snowless W. London. The cloud sheet has finally moved away and already the sky to the north is littered with small cumulus. Some convectional showers later perhaps?
-
Sorry, off topic, but 50cm of snow in parts of northern France according to BBC!!!
