Does anyone else find anticyclonic gloom the most depressing type of weather? Just bleak, still, grey nothingness feels so dystopian and gloomy. At least next week looks a bit sunnier (we’ll see).

It’s not the most pleasant weather type, bad enough in winter, foul in summer. ‘Usable’ though, compared to the usual wind and lashing rain.

Gloomy here in Czechia too, we’ve lost the lovely sunshine, unfortunately and air quality has deteriorated. At least the wind has calmed but everything is still frozen so I can’t do any work in the garden.

Absolutely. And let's not forget the November we had prior to that...

If i recall, wasn't it the wettest November on record for certain parts of the UK? Or at least, one of the wettest

Yes. The Thames and many other rivers have burst their banks in a number of places, threatening homes and businesses with flooding and the soil is saturated in much of Britain. No more wind and rain for a while, please 🙏

The anomaly maps from met office for the whole of 2023, I don’t feel like they show quite how trying 2023 was weather wise, im

I’m surirised as many areas had average sunshine for starters.

Shows how wet 2023 was, and early 2024 keeping that going. Average annual sunshine isn’t anything great in the UK, when as a country average, 65% of available daylight is cloudy. It’s why I’ll always hope for above average sunshine here.

Meanwhile, a Baltic -7°C here in Czechia at the moment 🥶

  4. Actually sunny here today! Did some gardening yesterday while the weather is mild but of course, as soon as I got stuck in, the heavens opened. So bored of rain. Looks like a significant change to much colder weather from Sunday, but only limited potential for snow. -4°C maximum on Monday, will certainly feel like winter

  5. Interesting weather here, started snowing on Friday evening, despite forecasts of 9°C. There was a covering all day yesterday but very slushy, slippery and unpleasant and as the day wore on, it turned to rain. Still raining this morning with no snow but the mountains have loads. 10°C forecast for today and 11°C tomorrow, so not the best Christmas, weather-wise. Still waiting for a sunny, cold high pressure to be able to enjoy walks, etc.

  6. Dramatic weather here last night with a nasty thunderstorm passing through, some of the lightning was very bright and I saw some big cg’s. One knocked out power in the whole town for 3 hours, we had no running water, either. Torrential rain and severe wind gusts. This all after the terrible shooting in Prague, it all felt quite scary to be honest.
Today is starting off with some blue sky but the wind is ramping up again

I saw that! Although I did have to laugh at the "cloud spotters". What a hobby! Couldn't be me...but they're in the perfect country for it eh, seeing as it's cloudy for about 325 days a year. 😂

There are so many different types of cloud, it’s very interesting. Thundery weather often brings some beautiful cloudscapes. I see a lot more in Czechia as the vile grey sheet that pervades the UK climate isn’t quite so prevalent there

I don't recall anyone complaining about too much sunshine. I do hear complaints of not enough rain when we have six months of below average rainfall followed by a three week long spell of 25+C and not a drop of rain which is a very different thing. I suggest that anyone who doesn't get the complaints of persistent dry weather in spring and summer should try growing their own food instead of paying someone else to do it for them.

As a double allotment holder for some years, I very much remember how challenging it was at times. Our site had mains water taps so we were lucky in that regard. Am not talking about rain though, more sunshine levels which in the UK are generally rather poor

I know right,  we’re probably the second cloudest country in the world after Iceland. Will take as much sun as is on offer at any time of the year. Even the brightest sunniest years on record here notably dull globally.

Indeed. Winter in southern Britain is especially challenging, a real slog to get through. Vitamin D supplements do help but you can’t beat natural light

Yes, It's the sort of forecast that we hope for - and often fail to get - in our Summer months...in December!

And seems like you're not far off! I did a little google and found a website showing average monthly sunshine hours - bar graphs below for Malaga and London respectively. May in London tops Malaga in December for sunshine, but only barely lol, and that's no doubt mostly just because of how much extra daylight hours we have to play with in May in the UK.

Worth noting too...London isn't even necessarily the best metric to go by as a point of comparison, because its sunnier than most cities in the UK. I tend to use it as a default because A) its where I mostly am, and B) its easy to get stats on it. But we can bump down 10, 20, or 30 hours of sunshine a month on this graph if we're instead using, say, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow etc. Or anywhere that isn't the South Coast, actually.

Always beggars belief on here when some people moan about ‘too much sunshine’ 😆 in the UK. Really. As an average for the country as a whole, over 65% of annual daylight is cloudy. Pretty grim.

What's wrong with that, unless you’re driving obviously, makes for some nice pictures, and is quite relaxing I find.

There’s been a lack of fog here this autumn and winter (so far) which has been quite disappointing, as I do like cold, foggy spells in winter.
The snow has nearly all melted here, was fun while it lasted. Forecast of 10°C and sunny for today which I’m not going to complain about

Loving the output this morning, a much needed drier spell on the way and hopefully not too chilly. Sunshine would be a bonus but rather dreary skies I suspect with that flow around the top of the high. A Green Christmas also looking increasingly likely, by way of a change. 😅

No doubt many will welcome a drier spell with over 200 flood warnings currently in place. Hopefully something seasonal though, a cold and sunny high with overnight frost and fog would be enjoyable (for me), as can go out and enjoy walks, exercise, etc. Not keen on a mild, gloomy high
