  1. The dry stratospheric air in that animation confirms the sting jet just as it approached Denmark.
  2. This is staggering! The 1500Z synop report from Kegnaes, Denmark (16 m) yesterday. Maximum sustained winds reported as 75 knots, with a gust of 104 knots (120 mph/194 kmph!). AAXX 28154 06119 27558 52459 10120 20087 39793 49815 52008 71086 333 60067 81/22 83/39 85/50 91071 91199 00104 91275= 52459 - 5 okta cloud cover. Current sustained wind 240 degrees at 59 knots. From the 333 line: 91071 - Gust of 71 knots in the 10-minute period preceding the report 91199 00104 - Maximum gust in the preceding hour 104 knots (the 00104 group is required because the 91199 gust group is off the scale!) 91275 - Maximum sustained wind in the preceding hour 75 knots
  3. To convert from knots to mph just add 15%. A quick way is add 10%, and then add another half of that 10%.
  4. Wow...Kegnaes in Denmark (16 m amsl)...73 gust 96 knots at 1400 Z! That was its last report, I assume the mast is somewhere in Latvia by now! 201310281400 AAXX 28144 06119 47418 72373 10122 20099 39748 49770 57059 76186 333 81/19 83/27 85/36 87/50 91096 91196=
  5. Pressure rose 5 hPa in 30 minutes at Tirstrup Airport in Denmark as the low passed just to the north. METAR/SPECI from EKAH, Tirstrup (Denmark). 6. It looks like that sustained hurricane-force wind at Westerland Airport in northern Germany could be a sting jet. It was only briefly at sustained 64 knots, then back down to 39 knots 30 mins later. 7. Westerland now sustained hurricane-force at 64 knots. METAR EDXW 281350Z 25064G76KT 2700 ////// 11/09 Q0974 AD CLSD=
  8. I think TAF of the week goes to the Westerland/Lyst airport in far northern Germany. At just 16 m amsl it's still on for gusts of 85 knots (99 mph) later. TAF EDXW 281100Z 2812/2819 19025G50KT 9999 BKN020 TEMPO 2812/2814 20035G65KT TEMPO 2814/2818 20050G85KT=
  9. There is no hurricane, except off the coast of Mexico. There were hurricane-force gusts, but mean speeds were well below hurricane-force. A hurricane is a totally different type of storm, totally unrelated to this one.

  11. But not at standard height. 82 mph was the highest representative speed reported.
  12. Latest TAFs for Denmark. Skrydstrup leading the way with gusts to 68 knots, Esbjerg on 65 kts, and various others on 60 kts. http://www.ogimet.com/ultimos_tafs2.php?lang=en&estado=Den&fmt=html&iord=yes&Send=Send

  14. Disregarding Needles, which is a non-standard exposure and therefore not comparable to other stations, the highest gust, according to the Met Office, was Langdon Bay, 82 mph.
  15. Don't let a fact like that get in the way of a good news story!
  16. Hoorn Helipad off the Dutch coast reporting 59 gust 69 kts, however it is at a height of 41 m above the surface. That leads to around a 15% higher speed than the standard 10 m. The same goes for ship reports. Some have anemometers located tens of metres above the surface so excercise caution when analysing them. Here's how anemometer-height affects reported wind speeds. 10 m Standard 15 m +5% 20 m +8% 25 m +11% 30 m +13% 35 m +14% 40 m +15% 60 m +21% METAR EHQE 280855Z AUTO 21059G69KT 5000 FEW010/// SCT017/// BKN022/// 16/11 Q////=
  17. Look at this for a TAF...De Kooy, Netherlands, 40 gust 55 kt, with a chance of 50 gust 80 kt! EHKD 280550Z 2806/2818 20028G38KT 9999 SCT020 BKN030 BECMG 2807/2809 22040G55KT PROB40 TEMPO 2809/2811 22050G80KT FEW012 FEW018CB BECMG 2812/2814 23030G45KT BECMG 2814/2816 25025G40KT
  18. No, between 1-4 am it will become 30 gust 50 kts, with a chance that between 3-6 am it will be 35 gust 55 kts. It will then abate from between 7-10 am to 16 gust 28 kts.BECMG 2801/2804 23030G50KT 9999 NSW PROB30 TEMPO 2803/2806 27035G55KT BECMG 2807/2810 27016G28KT
  19. The Heathrow TAF was updated at 0034 but says nothing of the nonsense that Sky News are reporting. They really haven't a clue what they're talking about and are an embarassement. Max winds 35 gust 55 knots (40 gust 63 mph) from 0300-0600 EGLL 280034Z 2800/2906 20018G30KT 6000 RA SCT008 SCT015 TEMPO 2800/2803 4000 +RA PROB40 TEMPO 2800/2804 BKN008 BECMG 2801/2804 23030G50KT 9999 NSW PROB30 TEMPO 2803/2806 27035G55KT BECMG 2807/2810 27016G28KT TEMPO 2808/2819 7000 SHRA PROB30 TEMPO 2811/2816 4000 +SHRA BKN014CB BECMG 2819/282
  20. Sky News: "Hurricane-force winds for the whole day..." How do they get away with it? I'm going to bed.
  21. Tonight's TAFs a further downgrade on earlier. Heathrow and Gatwick both max 35 gust 55 knots, down from 60 and 63. Southend does have 38 gust 60 knots though.
  22. As I pointed out earlier the 19Z meteocentre analysis lacks the synop and ship reports of the 18Z, hence the lower accuracy. The next proper analysis will be at 2100Z
