  1. Yes im still hopefull of some snow later. I woke up to a cm or so on the ground up here but since then it has been very light drizzle only.

To me it looks like quite a bit of the front has gone past us north east, so with it expected to pivot and then pull south that lot should come back accross as snow once the temps have dropped later and the colder air is being pulled in :)

  2. So what time is the heaviest ppn going to be tomorrow then? does anyone know lol? there have been that many changes to the forecasts and the front its hard to tell now

From reading above it sounds like the colder uppers wont start coming in until evening tomorrow and overnight into Monday but by then the BBC showed the front to have petered out. Does this mean the colder air will be too late?

    Lets hope not ey!!

  3. been a brilliant day in Sheffield today! Pure blizzard conditions this morning, best snow in ages, even better than the stuff we got 2 weeks ago!

Only down side is i was 3 hours late into work lol cuz of the jams :\

Paul Hudson said were in less cold air now so thats why its raining, shame though as it has dented the snow quite a lot

He showed more wintry showers over night though so it must only be a temporary change to rain, heres hoping anyway!

  4. I think many parts of the region may wake up to a covering of snow on Tuesday morning, particularly (though not exclusively) high ground, and particularly the western half of the region. A fair number of showers are likely to fire in off the Irish Sea on Monday evening and much of Tuesday and there will probably be a good 12-18 hour window when the showers will be of snow and hail at all levels. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible in the west of the region.

I think late on Tuesday afternoon and into the evening the heavy squally snow and hail showers will be replaced by lighter and more persistent sleet/rain as the warmer pool of air sinks southwards accompanied by weak fronts. This will generally wash away the snow cover below about 200-300m, but I think the tops of the North York Moors and Pennines will continue to see accumulations of snow.

From Wednesday lunchtime through to Friday, I expect showers generally to fall as snow, although with daytime maxima of 3-5C the snow will tend to thaw in the daytime sunshine except in areas that pick up a lot of heavy showers. The nearer the east coast you are, the more likely you are to see the snow showers. Inland, a lot will depend on the wind direction, but there is evidence that at times the showers may penetrate to the west of the North York Moors, especially late on Wednesday.

Excellent! I was just reading the BBC forecast for tomorrow and it does state that showers will turn increasingly to snow tomorrow, as you say especialy in the evening and overnight. I can see Sheffield doing well out of this kind of NW set up, lets hope so anyway!

The meto have a yellow warning for snow now and the boundary nearly clips the west of the region so im sure we'll see a few flakes tomorrow :)

  5. the funny radar images are very annoying arent they! ive never known it do that before (im using the met office website) so many straight or sharp lines around, its hard to make out whats happening, why is it doing that?

Its difficult to judge how much more there is to come, plenty of blues still out to the west heading our way, but with the strange echos and seemingly miss-matches in colour and intensity its frustrating haha!

  6. It's going to be hard to call- the milder air is already overhead (850hPa temps of -2 or -3) but it will only penetrate towards the surface as the polar maritime airmass approaches from the west and we get some mixing of the layers. I have a feeling that over much of Yorkshire, if the mild air does get in before the precipitation clears, it will only be the back edge, but of course that could make the difference between 5-10cm of snow and 2-5cm of slush/ice for some of us. Tonight's GFS 18Z run seems to be suggesting that significantly milder air may not arrive until tomorrow night with maxes of just 2 or 3C tomorrow.

I must admit that until recently I had largely written off this particular snow event but it's mainly because in my experience similar events have generally failed to deliver other than to limited slices of the British Isles- mainly because the west gets the milder air quickly and the east gets only light precipitation. Tonight's event is proving quite unusual for how much heavy precipitation is getting into central and eastern areas, but to be fair the GFS has been suggesting that for a while.

Hi. Thanks for the reply :) im in it for the long haul tonight anyway, sat here in the dark lol watching intently, so lets hope it keeps as snow so we get a final hurrah!

  7. Hello everyone, my first post on the forum smile.png

As you can tell from my name im a winter fan hehe, and I picked tonight to say hello as its a massive blizzard outside on the western hills of Sheffield smile.png

Looking at the met office radar, all those lovely reds and pinks are heading our way, so the forecast for 10cm+ tonight may be accurate for once!

Lets hope so ey, and I hope everyone in Yorkshire and Lincs gets the good stuff!
