  3. Remember CET doesn't represent the whole of England, Dec 1995 was much colder in the North of England than last month. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  4. Nice images, looks good easy walking along the old railway track. Drive that way sometimes to Newcastle. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham

  6. Lowest temps for each year in UK for last 100 years or so. Did have a list for England in a book somewhere. link Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  7. Usually get somewhere in England has min below -10C most winters. Shap lowest at present with - 10.9C back in early December, I think. To get a min below -15C in England and Wales you need to go back to March 2001. This was last truely severe wintry spell to hit the UK, with severe blizzards and temps down to -20C in Highlands. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  8. There has been some interesting low maxima, but overall min temperatures have been nothing out of the ordinary for a cold spell in winter. The lack of any real low temps must be in part due to lack a decent covering of snow. If the condtions that prevailed last week over Scotland had occurred with a good covering of snow min would probably been significantly lower -15C/-20C. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  9. Very much doubt any location in the Pennines has seen a metre of snowfall in a month probably since Feb 96 at least. A metre of snow is very large amount, even over a month. Although upland areas do see heavier falls at times, with the element of severe drifting is very hard to gauge accurately snow depth. Estimate snowfall for enitire 1978-79 winter for the Pennines was 200mm rainfall water equialvent, with roughly the same amount in 1947. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  10. Been in the Lakes last few days it was cold but nothing of any real note in terms of ice. Unsure how you come to a 'accumulated' metre of snow in Dales in December, Copley on edge of N Pennines at 253m asl recorded 39cm of fresh falls of snow in December. Carn't see anywhere in Yorkshire getting much more than this. Dusting of snow on various parts of Lake and N Pennines deepest appears 1-3cm snow lying in Stainmore area down to around 350m from shrs on 2nd Dec. Drifts remaining from early snow on several mounatins. None of any great extent. Dont think its been a great year so far for upland snow in England anyway. Snowier start to Jan 2008 than this year, has 14cm on 3rd Jan. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  11. Very monochrome here as well temp -1.1C . Doesnt feel that cold because lack of wind. Only sun I 've seen in days was over in sunny Cumbria on Xmas day. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  12. Thanks TM for that. So Durham is the coldest city in England. The End. Thank god for that. Cue snowiest town/village again. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  13. Barnard Castle is like Harrogate to me now. Live near Middleton in Teesdale, that has a working mens club and a Co-Op whose orgins predate that of Rochdale let it be known. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  14. Little Asby is colder though . Over 1971-00 period I would imagine you average would be in considerably lower. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  15. Thanks TM, Durham would still be coldest city in England then due its lower min and similar max to Bradford then? Hope your post will lay things to rest. Until the next thread of snowiest town, village school, post office remerges again. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  16. Durham is probably just colder than Leeds on a yearly average biggest difference in summer of course. Leeds often appear to very well regarding temps during the summer, with the higher temperature rarely making much further North let alone in to Scotland. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/ne/maps/tmean_17.gif Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  17. Leeds Weather Centre http://www.tutiempo.net/en/Climate/LEEDS_W...R_CTR/33470.htm LBA http://www.tutiempo.net/en/Climate/Leeds_A...dford/33463.htm Linton on Ouse will be the best match for York been only a couple of miles away. http://www.tutiempo.net/en/Climate/Linton-On-Ouse/32660.htm Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  18. Snow shrs staring to develop here from system pushing South from N Sea. Wind picking up Temp 1.1C. Could be interesting afteroon for SE Scotland/NE England. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  19. Mean max 6.3C Max temp 10.3C (13th) Lowest max 0.4C (22nd) Mean min 1.8C Max Min 6.2C Lowest min -4.9C Mean temp 4.0C 8 Air frosts Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  20. Strong gusty N wind temp 0.6C mod snow shrs. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  21. Good luck with the book, how hard was it to publish? Prompts the question. What book would you write? Personally if would either a book on the 'Climate of Cumbria' or the 'The Winter of 1947' Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  22. Wouldn't mind a repeat of these days Jan 14 th 1987 Snow shrs with gust of 77mph at Warcop Range. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119870114.gif The ultimate for me has to be 14/15 Feb 1979 http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119790214.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119790215.gif Strength of the wind plus heavy snow and sub zero temps, perfection. Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
  23. The winter months CET for 1978-79 was 1.6C, compared to 2.9C for 1985-86. If you include March instead of November as part of the winter, 1978-79 is colder still Main problem with 1985-86 is lack real depth of snow, it score well and days snowfall and lying but depths were limited. Near here at Widdybank Fell remained below freezing all month in Feb 1986 Mark Teesdale,Co Durham
