Winters 55/56, 85/86, 95/96 and 05/06 saw a lot of cold anticyclonic conditions notably Feb 56 and Feb 86 2 very cold dry months. Winter 05/06 didn't produce at any stage anything as cold but was consistently quite cool. Winter 95/96 produced plenty of cold easterlies. Winter 65/66 also produced some very cold easterly airstreams in Jan. The only winter not to appear is 75/76 which was mild, but I do believe also very dry.. so mmm a theme here.
Yes, February 1986: the lost and forgotton cold month. With a CET of minus 1.1C, it's actually more severe than December 2010 was. It also comes right off the back of November 1985, which was the coldest since 1919, with a CET of 4.1.
It's funny you should that now, as I'm currently getting statistics together to make one of my historic videos on those two months.

We could be in for quite a convective day tomorrow, as an incursion of pretty chilly Pm air is dragged across the UK behind Storm Abigail. There will be slight to moderate instability along coastal areas due to sea-based convection, as the cool Pm air moves over the relatively warm sea. There is also some very strong deep-layer wind shear from the jet stream running through the country and some very steep lapse rates too.
I'd expect western coastlines to be in for a pretty good chance of seeing some hefty thundery showers tomorrow afternoon.

Depending upon where you live, Jan 2013 and March 2013 were either rubbish or extremely snowy. We lived up on the moor back then and had some big snowfalls with a lot of drifting at times. The photo of the gritter you've put up could have been replicated further up the Lammermuirs from where I was, some of the drifts were massive.
Here are a few snaps, the first three from the Jan and the second three from the March:
IMBY, March 2013 was rubbish whatever your preferences are. Daytime maximas were almost constantly 3-5C and minimas were 0C and it was rediculously cloudy. There wasn't that much snow and it just consisted of cold rain and sleet with the occasional day of wet snow. Even the snowiest spell overnight 22-23 March only accumulated about 2cm. An awful month!
Not really snowy enough for the coldies, and far too cold and dull for the mildies...

I think February 2012 is a month that is often very hard done by and forgotten. The first half of that month was really quite cold with a notable snowy spell on 4-5 February and a smaller one on the 8 February.
I think it's just because the last ten or so days of that month were very mild, that's why it's often overlooked.

I suppose the most notable wintry spell for me was early January 2010, when I had continuous heavy snow from around 20:30 on Monday 4 January to about 10:30 on Tuesday 5 January. I remember it started snowing quite lightly at first, but just got heavier and heavier and by around minight it was almost a whiteout outside. That then continued on throughout the rest of the night.
The next day the entire street got together and built a massive snowman, that must have been a good 15-20ft tall:
Also quite interestingly, in my neck of the woods January 2010 actually recorded a lower temperature (the lowest I've ever recorded, in fact) and a deeper snow depth (the deepest also) than the entirety of December 2010, even though it was shorter-lived.

Got up 17°C this afternoon with some decent spells of sunshine. The minimum today also looks to be no lower than 15°C (assuming the temperature doesn't fall below that before midnight), so that will make today's daily mean 16°C, which is about 8°C above average!

15°C with increasing spells of sunshine today. It could get quite warm if the sun stays out.

15C and windy here. Very remarkable for so late 20:00 in the middle of November.

I'm going to try a daily break down of the 06z run, since it looks like we're in for a very topsy-turvy week...
Tuesday will see pretty much a continuation of what we have had so far this November. It will be very mild and cloudy, though maybe some eastern areas could see a bit of brightness later on. There will also be some rain for the far north west of Scotland too.
Wednesday will then be another wet and windy day, especially for the northern and western areas. It again will be very mild for time of year.
On Thursday we start to bring in some cooler air from a bit more of a westerly direction, so temperatures will be down a degree or so on Wednesday. They may still be slightly above average however. It will also be very breezy with some persistent rain over Scotland.
Friday should then see quite an interesting day, as a large incursion of Pm air moves of the UK. It again will be very blustery with some pretty heavy showers rattling through. These showers could also contain hail and thunder in northern and western parts of the country. The biggest detail however will be the temperatures, which will be significantly lower than what they have been (maybe even slightly below average).
By Saturday however, we bring the mild air back as quite an active warm front moves across the country. It will be a wet day, but temperatures could vary by quite a lot over different parts of the UK. Under a milder air mass, behind the warm font we could see temperatures reaching the mid teens in the south west, however they will be limited to only single digits in the north east, ahead of the front.

Wet and windy this morning, though nothing really out of the ordinary for November. The temperature is 12C.

I didn't get lower than 14°C last night! Brilliant for early November!

Gone very chilly here. Down to 5C.

Clouded over again. I can't really complain after yesterday, though.
EDIT: Brightened up again.

Fog starting to clear here and the sun is now peaking through! Hopefully another beautiful afternoon to come!

Dense fog this morning, with glimpses of blue sky above. 9°C.

Contrast with this side of Greater Manchester
Yep, quite a contrast!
1 November 2015 - exceptionally mild with a foggy morning, a sunny afternoon and a nice sunset!

Yep, 19C was today's maximum.
Even now, the sun is barely setting and I can already see signs of the fog reforming. I assume another very foggy morning is on the cards tomorrow morning...

18C where I am now! Unbelieveable for early November. I wonder if I can squeeze in a 19C?
