Little bit of rain here in Leicester (central) temp was at 6c around noon, now dropping off, currently at 5.5c @ 13:08
Not sure we'll see any white stuff though....

So, is that it now for 2016 plumes? Chances of another one before the weather turns totally Autumnal?
Don't know, opinions please?

Yes, I have just ran it frame by frame, hoping to spot A stepper, but amazing to see the strike hit, and then decay to a string of pearls, screen grabbed several, the light generated from both the strike on the hill in the distance, and the point blank strike only 250 yards away, light the whole area up to a mid summer's day at noon!!! Incredible power......
Horses didn't seem to bat an eyelid, but I bet they got a good fright, just not seen in the short clip!!
Didn't spot A steppa, either.......

When I played the storm on radar it's following the M4 exactly (moving west), very weird!
Somebody with a weather background said years ago that thunderstorms could align with motorways, due to the additional heat generated by vehicles, and the reflected heat from the road surface, and he had thunderstorm paths plotted running up the M1, M6 and a couple of other big wide roads... This was back in the very early 1990s, and it looked pretty convincing, and I suppose there could be some truth in it, what do you wise people of Netweather think....?

The short lived electrical activity around the west Midlands (Nuneaton/Cov/Brum) last evening, looked initially promising, but died out virtually straight away.....
What/how does the atmosphere recover its cap so quickly? or were other forces to blame? (I'm talking about the ones that sprang up around 18:00-18:15)
Thanks in advance

The cloud photos I posted earlier, I asked if this was early erosion of the "cap" if it was, and the resulting "popcorn" storm developed rapidly, spat out a few strikes, and the died!! Is this a case of the "cap" 're-asserting itself? Bit like an elastic band twanging back after being stretched?

the warnings for Friday I think are not really for storms they indicate some locally very heavy and thundery rain which refers to intensity , Lightning is not even mentioned the forecast tomorrow is different but since this area is warned now unlike today and yesterday I wouldn't be surprised if that was the day to be dry
Gordon;
The bird on BBC East Midlands 7pm Weather said "Thursday overnight into Friday morning a line of torrential thunderstorms will cross the country from west to east" "The morning commute could be really messy!"

Got some fantastic short videos of this evenings storms from Barnsley, that my sister took, never seen lightning like it....!
In fact I have, it reminded me of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.. You know, when the big thunderheads form with all the lightning embedded in the heads... Going to try and upload when I have a spare mo later on........

Thunder now heard. Strange sound though. Not rumbles, just short sharp bangs even at a distance!
I heard that sort of thunder as a kid, I was about 10 yrs old, I have never heard anything like it since, but I remember it was a very severe storm (I'm 52 now)!!!
But I remember that sound like it was yesterday.....!!!

Cloud-ground strokes will always hit an object/ground, hence the name. Ones that don't make it down to the ground will be crawlers and intracloud lightning. The evidence left behind will be down to how powerful the bolt of lightning was. Positive CG's are rarer, but carry a lot more power, negative CG's in a storm are more common, and will hit plenty of objects without leaving any visible evidence.
Thanks Mapantz, how's it looking out there now....?

Do you think little old Leicesters Lightning Shield will be switched on tonight? Looks likely to slip east of, so flashing out to sea near Ipswich, maybe Kings Lynn....?
