We had a great storm, lots of little rumbles, then big rumbles, enough time to get everything under cover, loads of rain, one gigantic flash and bang that scared the willies out of us all, everyone unplug devices, then watch bonkers hailstones pounding the garden. I keep hoping for more, but the air outside is much colder now, am I unlikely to see another storm arrive?

Once again i make the soul destroying journey into the gates of hell and inferno.....Central London in english, today is going to be even hotter!!!!
Good luck, cities are bad in heat waves.

As long as we do NOT have any ridiculous plumes in September. My moan: trying to conduct an interesting, productive and creative science lesson for 30 teenagers with mild heatstroke in which everyone shows progress and learns, in a poorly designed classroom with inadequate ventilation. My wish for September is either fresh and bright sunshine with a breeze, or cool windy storms. Anything but a heatwave. In a job where you are free to move your place of work if the weather is extreme, heatwaves could be fine, but if you are stuck in an overheated box with kids who can't concentrate because of the heat, it is pretty grim.

Could the amount of methane in the atmosphere cause disruption to the QBO and change the period?

Persistent wet followed by sudden and strong rise in temperature sounds like a recipe for blight on my allotment :-(

No data, sorry.
perfect summer day.

No idea if this is on of the reasons, but it seems interesting:

The problem is the jetstream, cold polar air coming near to us and meeting warm air either right over us or just south of us, so we either get wet and windy, or cold. Or warm/damp. Every few days might be a bit of change between the cold, and the wet and windy. Or just persistently one or the other.

My friend on FB posted something about coming to see her stand at the Norfolk show (not likely as I live miles away) and my first thought was, "What a strange thing, why are they having the Norfolk Show at THIS time of year, I'm sure they used to have it in summer...?" And then I remembered it is summer.

Anyone else near Oxford today? I was out without my phone when the biggest thunderclap happened, no pics but the whole day was awesome, storm after storm came by, so much energy. And near my parents in Norfolk absolute monsoon season with people canoeing down the road :-)

Getting some lovely flashes to my NW now from that Wantage cell. Looks like they're getting a soaking just a few miles away. Dry as a bone here
Time to check outside, I have been glued to laptop for too long.....

Being under them is truly spectacular
I sat and watched ours literally puffing up from the inside, extremely weird.

Ridiculous, cells have started building again as they have started heading south rather than north towards me, not even a drop of rain today, i know i wasn't really forecast much, but the way the ppn has avoided me today really has been spectacular.
Tomorrow may be a better chance, heat building where you are and rain forecast....hope it is thundery

Back home now from chasing that storm. I first met it just near to Ampthill where there was a gorgeous wall cloud with bright flashes of lightning and bolts. I finally managed to stop south of Bedford and film the storm for a good 20-30 minutes as the heaviest rain avoided me but the lightning was immense. I have hours of footage to edit and at one point was holding a camcorder pointing at the storm and also filming the opposite direction with my GoPro. There were bolts firing all around me and bright flashes all around so it is possible I have caught some bolts I didn't even see as I was watching the storm. I don't remember witnessing a storm with such powerful lightning with such frequency.
I then chased the storm into Bedford but then got stuck in rush hour traffic. No problem though as I was still able to film the bright flashes and bolts raining onto the city as I was sitting in my car (using a GoPro dash cam, not holding a camcorder whilst driving). When I eventually got through I chased the storm towards Kettering, then Northampton and eventually left it behind as I headed home up the M1. By the time I got to Kettering it had lost a lot of its power but even then was still more powerful than 75% of the storms I see in this country.
I am so happy I decided to target MK/Bedford, it looks like I got myself in the right place at the right time.
Back in Derby it is bone dry, 22c and stiflingly humid. There are still cells out there and every chance more could fire up as these storms are not giving up for a few hours yet. I don't mind if I see a storm or not, but I wouldn't say no if one was offered.
Wow! can't wait to see your film, sounds fun :-)

12 miles down the road and we got diddly squat!
My friend in Wallingford also got nothing, it kept fading on the radar as it got closer, we saw it growing upwind from us over Eynsham, then it just came and hit us. Perfect show!

Funnily enough, the most similar years to 2016 when assuming a La Nina by the summer don't indicate much at all for Jul-Aug temperatures. Alas, I'm not allowed to tell you the exact numbers as it's for professional interests. Precipitation is more interesting and agrees with a deterioration in some parts of the UK - but I can't tell you where!
You do get the generally better start to the season being indicated, though.
How tantalizing - please tell us when nearer to the time what you meant , I will try and guess in the mean time.

At least three dead in that storm in Germany, one of them trapped in an underground car park. Horribly scary.

Haha, got to see round two approaching. I told the kids it was going to be like the wizard of oz, we saw so many swirls buffing into each other, if they had coordinated into a proper tornado that would have been very nice. As it was, lots of hot up drafts and swirls over our heads and a few more top cracks of thunder and lightning. Yippee!
