Did someone get the timing wrong? We're getting ours now! Been lobbing it down for the last two hours, approx; and there's a bit of a blow goin' on! When I saw the comments up to now, I thought 'Storm? What storm?' Sorta 'get it' now!

The forecasts always suggested that you was going to get it last, I'm in the Essex / Greater London region about 50 to 80 miles south of you and it peaked here around about 6 to 8am so it makes sense that it has moved north-east as forecast and is now peaking across East Anglia, it'll swing out into the North-Sea in the next hour or 2 then winds for you should begin to abate.

Just when I thought things might be dying down a bit, we've just had a 65mph gust here in Mid Suffolk. The wind over the living room chimney is howling and the power lines at the front of the house are shrieking.

Strongest winds here for several years - I'm amazed we still have power.

Maybe a freak squall line, the general winds seem to have eased off here in the last hour or so still blustery though. I think Norfolk will be experiencing the worst of it now as the storm passes out into the North-Sea.

Well I have lived through 87 90 and the period of 13/14 winter, Katie for me beats all the rest bar the 87 & 90. The intensity of the wind over a constant period was amazing. The fact that I am 500 plus ft above see level. At my mums in sanderstead. It was ferocious and constant had me window twitching. This was a proper storm which has caused power outages ok not a great deal of damage which is most important part no loss of life as well, power outages in spring from a proper south westerly storm. Awesome. A request now can we have a period of calm and warm weather please like Friday.... I remember my dad telling the story of a heatwave on good Friday and snow by Monday it was snowing. Rather like this year really

Still not as bad as the October 2000 or 02 storms in my opinion which are by some distant the most violent storms I can recall with 80-90mph gusts inland, as I was less then a year old when the 87 storm struck and still only 3 or 4 when the 1990 storm hit I can't remember them, but about 4am to 8 this morning was certainly on a par with the peak of the St' Jude storm but much longer lasting. If this had been when trees where still in leaf the damage would have been significantly worse.

Lots of power outages over the south this morning:

I'm sure I saw a bright flash in the sky at about 6am this morning but heard no thunder so it wasn't lightning which makes me think it could have been a power cable short circuiting!  Wind has been ferocious in the last 3 or 4 hours, easily 60mph gusts possibly more at times. Still going strong but think it's dropped to about 40mph in the last hour!

  5. Well what a night/early morning it's been, absolutely vicious gusts of wind here which rudely woke me up several times during the night I wanted to have a lye-in this morning but no such joy. Also torrential rain in the last couple of hours which has been going sideways in the wind, interesting to hear of reports of snow in some places too I'm surprised about that no snow to speak of here but that's the last thing we need at the moment what with everything else going on outside. It's been absolute chaos, must have had a few gusts in the 60mph+ region I'd say!  I get the impression it has eased off a tad in the last half an hour or so though.......touchwood!  :bomb::help:

I'm surprised there are not more here on this thread. Are there any other forums tracking Katie right now?

The local regional forums will probably be the most busy places discussing the approaching storm, especially the South-East / East Anglia forum as that is where the brunt of Katie is due to hit!

  7. Had a couple of really torrential showers pass through here today with hail and gusty squally winds. Been waiting for our garden fence to go already so I'll be surprised if it survives tonight/tomorrow!

Met Office now upgrading their warnings to Amber for the far South-East, I can easily see 55-60mph even in the London region and 65-75mph in coastal regions possibly slightly higher locally.

  8. Certainly had some quite squally gusts here early yesterday evening as the rain band moved through easily 35-40mph will be interesting to see if we get any potent squalls today's if any heavy / thundery showers pass overhead. Regarding tonight and tomorrow, looks like Katie will have cleared out into the North-Sea by the early afternoon tomorrow. Heavy rain and strengthening winds in the south-west from this evening then overnight the strongest of the winds will push up the channel and effect south facing coasts 60-70mph locally perhaps a tad more then the core of strongest winds will run up over South-Eastern areas tomorrow morning probably peaking around breakfast time with inland gusts 50-60mph locally more so definitely worth keeping an eye on things over the next 12 hours or so for any changes in track and intensity.

GFS 00z gone out on its own and pushes the low further south, I think the 06z will correct it a touch further north

The low is deepening over us which is not something we have seen all winter as the lows through winter had already gone through the deepening stage before hitting us

60-70mph over land looks plausible with prehaps 80-90mph in exposure on the coast

Still time for change with tomorrow's runs the ones firming up on detail

With the system Monday it looks as though it will all happen before we wake up with the strongest winds during the early hours of Monday (that's a good thing)

Rainfall will also be an issue with maybe 1-2" of rain for some

Before that we have today's wind and rain to contend with 50mph gusts for a short time this afternoon as a pretty active front moves through

Tomorrow sees a mixture ofsunshine and the chance of a few potent showers with the odd rumble and hail

Deepening over land you say, would this suggest a potential Sting Jet?  The prospect of 70mph inland gusts and 90mph on the coast is certainly pretty grim, would certainly put it on a par with the St 'Jude storm at the very least.

surprised there has been no mention of weather warnings on saturday for wind that the MetO issued yesterday..

Yes looks quite bad for tomorrow, widespread Gales locally severe on coasts. 40-50mph inland perhaps 60+ in exposure but it's Monday that is looking a lot more concerning, pressure charts suggest a potentially very disruptive storm coming up from the south-west so I wouldn't be surprised if this gets named Katie which I believe was the next name on the list.

Wind still howling here.. Anyone near me getting these big gusts ?

Yep although not quite as frequently as about an hour or 2 back, people saying this has been a non-event and nothing more then what our region has experienced already this winter haven't been experiencing some of the gusts I have today clearly, probably people snuggled up indoors, stick your heads out your front door then tell me that. I was almost getting blown clean off my feet earlier and there's been reports of London Bridge station having it's roof blown off and there's been trees down in Brentwood just a couple of miles from me!

Why my comment earlier I said "I dont understand"

Mate I'm in Essex about 40 miles east of you and a little bit further north too and at times it's been absolutely crazy here, and I imagine it is even crazier the further south and west you go!
