  1. technically the 28th december 2000 was still the 20th century..the 21st century started on jan 1 2001....lol
  2. gotta say diddly since the turn of the century...all winters have been either mild or fairly non descript and very forgetable!
  3. im going for 5.5c..you know it makes sense!
  4. no way can you class march as a winter month....march has only managed to have a colder cet than feb once in the last 40 yrs..even taking into account we have had some very mild febs in the last twenty of those years...and there have been many occurances of 70f plus days being recorded with frequency in march too...the fact that the number of cold marchs has dimished quite markedly in the last two decades...confirming its position as a spring month!
  5. after a warm start im goin for an average spring and summer..and a more seasonal autmn...cet = 10.1c
  6. wouldnt the stats about the warmest winter in 30yrs be about north america..as our winter temps would have no bearing on ice formation in the western atlantic.
  7. just a note the daffs in my garden started to come through on the 29th december..which is the earliest i have seen by a good week to 10days...before.
  8. i think this winter is more akin to 1988-89...dosnt bare any resemblence to 1946-47 wotsoever!
  9. wasnt 1740..almost a degree colder than 1816 and the coldest year on record?
  10. all the cherry blossom is out in exeter right now!!
  11. The sudden thaw of early feb 1945...brought the red armies advance on berlin to a shuddering halt..and prolonged the war in europe by anotha 3 months..and thus strengthed the allied position in europe during the cold war and possible prevented a later world war 3 had the russians reached the rhine in 1945..dont you know!
  12. i was 11 and lived in exeter in feb 78...i remember b4 the snow came we had a few days of intermitent snow showers but nothin too serious...on the 15th i went 2 school in pouring rain..it rain all day..by home time it was still raing but by the time i had got home the rain was slowly turning to sleet and by 6 it was a heavy wet snow... i watched the bbc weather tht evening hoping a forcast of heavy snow etc...but they only forcast possibilty of sleet ova dartmoor...even though by now it was snowing heavily outside and beginning to settle....by bedtime there was a fair covering..and by the next morning it was clear sunny and cold with a deep lyer of snow. ove the next cpl days it snowed on 2 occasions as fronts tried and failed to break thru..by saturday they were forecasting blizzrds by lunchtime. this time they were spot on...and all afternoon evening and nite it blew a gale and snowed like i never seen snow b4 or since..by the following morning my dads cortina was completly buried and we couldnt open our back door...as was our back fence which was nearly 8ft high. somethin i always remember is walkin up our street in the teeth of the blizzard it stings u face like hell...like little needles...all good fun tho!!
  13. always a good read mr data....old weather events long forgotten r always fascinating....well done!!
  14. im goin 4 a miserable and dull 6.2c....a foretaste of the rest of winter in my opinion!
  15. amazing how many of us were at school in 78-79 i was 12...and like evryone else had many a day off school due 2 heavy snow and blizzards...i lived in exeter at the time and had been treated to the great blizzard of feb 1978...however for it to happen all ova again on 4 or 5 occasions the following winter was a wonder to behold..i never experienced a winter like it since..even when i was living in essex during the 80s and early nineties.....happy days!!
  16. sounds great if u can teleport someone from one place to anotha in an instant....bet i still be late 4 work though?
  17. no has mentioned the fact the the ground would have retained suffuiceint heat through the warm june and hot july to have moderated daytime and particularly night time temperatures through august.. iknow this does happen in autumns with hot summers in terms of frosts or lack of them with the right synoptics when frost would normally occur....so it is possible that residual warming omiited from the ground could have prevented a cooler august than we got.
  18. simply because no one else has pick it..im going 4 lonely old 13.4c
  19. im surprised it only 10 days shorter....feels like 3 months shorter 2 me!
  20. i remember getting soaked watching newcastle grab alate equaliser against spurs at white hart lane..ha ha..also tht day the might hammers turned ova man u 3-2 at old trafford!..bliss made up for getting drenched!
