  1. TJS1998Tom We had light rain this morning which has downgraded to light drizzle this afternoon as well. Looking at the radar we are just underneath the rear edge of a frontal system which initially came in this morning from France but is now moving over Brussels/the Netherlands. Seems to have sucked all the energy out of the air but hopefully as it moves off tonight the air will clear ready to generate more energy for the next event.
  2. Still buzzing from Wednesdays storms. I went into the garden Wednesday about midday - it was overcast and had that "calm before the storm feeling" (my favourite time of a storm) - there was absolutely no breeze, no birds were singing, nothing - it was absolutely silent. I thought right then that we could be in with a good chance of something special, and thankfully we didn't have to suffer the disgusting heat we usually get with these kind of events. I really hope this has kicked of the season around here and we get some decent night time storms this year now. Still waiting to see a night time fork since the London supercell of 2018. Now that was a special night - first the supercell in the north west distance with constant blue strobe lightning for hours (but no sound) and then incredible French imports at 1.30am approaching with green lightning from the south before transition to horizonal purple forks right across the sky over my back garden. Incredible night and one I'll always remember fondly.
  3. Saturday has SE potential according to gfs at the moment... Sunday and Monday too in different areas. Definitely will be keeping an eye on developments...
  4. Eagle Eye That was most of my experience last night as well. Mostly silent storm!
  5. Woken up at 2am with a bang. Looked out the window and saw the rooftops/trees lighting up reflecting lightning but couldn't see the actual lightning although it was incredibly frequent, like every few seconds but curiously there weren't many rumbles after that and the ones that I did hear were not that loud and I could hear it moving away slowly after that getting quieter. No rain either. Then about 5am we had some more but again the same kind of distant lightning that you can't see the source. My guess was that the storms just skimmed us and looking on the radar images indeed that was the case. Still, nice to get off the ground properly with a night time storm - especially so early in the season. I just hope the next one comes a bit closer! Incredible night for some looking in the thread though. Now, when's the next event?
  6. It COULD be our first major storm event of 2024 but as always take the "could" with a large pinch of salt as these things are always subject to change (often at the last minute). Still, the signs are looking good so far for tomorrow night and I can't help but feel a little excited at the possibility of a decent night time storm (been years since we've had one here).
  7. A Face like Thunder Yeah, I read about that in the netweather forecast for yesterday (read it today). keeping an eye on that, as generally round these parts the last few years our best chance of a night time storm is an import rather than anything home grown which usually has no trigger round here anymore for some reason. Friday looks like it may have a bit of potential as well but will need to keep an eye on things nearer the time.
  8. Quick update from last week from me as couldn't post at the time. Last thursday was a total bust apart from some nice cells which came over and dumped a load of rain. However, when I finished work on friday the skies to my north were absolutely black and I saw the most incredible shelf cloud I've ever seen. I tried so hard to get some pictures but the thing was so massive I couldn't find a clear spot without buildings in the way to picture it. I managed to get home quickly before it arrived and started to drop rice grain sized hail. Had a couple of rumbles from it too so my first storm on 2024. Just sorry I couldn't get any pics for the thread.
  9. Well, this year has been really poor from a storms point of view for my area. I've had about 6 VERY weakly electrified storms maybe 1 or two rumbles, and any flashes all IC, no forks at all. This is despite massive cells coming right over and dumping loads of water, but there just seems to have been hardly any triggering mechanism this year for us. Hoping for better things next storm season. Now...saying that, I do hope we get some Thundersnow this winter! I've been incredibly lucky to have experienced it twice in my life. It's so unreal feeling, having lightning right overhead/nearby but no sound (the snow has a natural sound dampening effect). A truly beautiful sight to behold. Wishing everyone a great winter.
  10. Had one rumble last evening about 6.30pm when it got incredibly dark early from a passing cell blocking out the light. It absolutely poured down for about 10 minutes. My mother said she saw a flash at about the same time as the rumble.
  11. Warm and sunny now. 24c. Still, nice weather for going out this late in September.
  12. Yeah, clouding over a bit here but nothing substantial/stormy looking at all. Tbh I expected as much. All the action seems to be out west/north west (as usual).
  13. Incredible. I would've loved to have been there to see that. Usual bright and sunny here. However, forecast was for potential late morning/early afternoon so will see if anything develops.
  14. French imports are the best! They are often mcs in nature and quite powerful if they make it here. Yeah, it was weird having hardly any wind while other people have had really strong wind. Every storm is different though, that's what makes them so special. I haven't had a night time storm for two years so really appreciated the one we had early yesterday morning.
  15. Incredible storm at 12.30am this morning. Lasted for ages and flashes every few seconds. Proper Usa style stuff. Didn't come right over, most of the flashes were quite far away and all ic but was great to finally get something and something at night as well. What was weird was there was hardly any wind whatsoever. Just constant flashes and booms (not very loud). Still haven't seen a single fork this year and guessing this will probably be my last chance but what a way to finish off what has for me been an incredibly disappointing season up until last night when things turned around. Good grief!
  16. Had nothing during the "breakdown". A couple of drops this morning on the windscreen as I was going to work but that's about it. Hottest place in the country for the longest - no storms. Always the same. At this point I'll take a shower, anything! Looking black from the West at the moment. I see some small cells are around on radar but not sure if they'll peter out before getting here... As others have said Sunday looks the most promising for my area but I'll wait and see if it changes as it's still a way off yet.
  17. Yeah, something like that. I have a friend who lives just south west of Sevenoaks - not too far way, and he has had storm after storm all summer.
  18. Yep, certainly is weird looking at those sunshine total maps but I'm telling you, at least here it's been sunny almost every single day since April. Storms forecast for pretty much everywhere in the next few days...except here! I think I'm gonna write this season off and look forward to next year! Still, you never know, maybe the forecast will change slightly with storms from the west moving more eastwards and storms from the east moving more westward. One can only hope.
  19. Not here. We have had nothing but sunshine non stop since early spring with only a few cloudy/showery days as the exception. We've had a couple of short heatwaves at the beginning of the summer but thankfully it's been nothing compared to previous years. I was hoping we'd largely gotton away with it this year, then I saw the forecast last week.
  20. I was hoping we'd escaped the worst of the usual Summer Heatwaves this year but here we go again. Not sure why people claim "We haven't had much of a Summer". It's been sunny here almost every single day since April, with hardly any convective activity this year whatsoever. I haven't seen a storm since the beginning of May I think and anything I have seen has been barely extremely rare and barely active. Any remote chance after this disgusting heat finally buggers off we'll be in for a thundery breakdown? Desperate for something substantial this year. Haven't seen a single fork for over a year.
  21. Haven't been around for a while as absolutely nothing to report. Been a dismal summer storm wise here with the only consistent theme being sunny and warm (but not convective) . Even when things looked promising on storm forecasts nothings materialised or missed us completely. Only a few weeks to go until the end of storm season. I feel this summer has been a huge missed opportunity for us.
