  1. CryoraptorA303 May 2018 was a wet month with thunderstorms but also very sunny. At this point I'd take a sunny and wetter than average month like May 2018 over May 2022. Only the first half of June in 2019 was bad. 2nd half, July and August were pretty decent. July had average sunshine and August was drier and sunnier than average, and the summer avoided the annoying cooling winds that you get in the really poor summers like 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012 etc.
  2. CryoraptorA303 May 2022 was exceptionally dull here, failing to even reach 150 hours. If we had a repeat of that month, then we would be at risk of recording a duller year than 2021 (Heathrows dullest year). Why have warm, dryish and dull when you can have warm, dry and sunny? That would help with sunshine and drying out the ground.
  3. Scorcher June 2023 was only the 2nd warmest here, behind 1976. I've noticed that January has the lowest positive anomaly of any month, only being about 2.2c warmer than average. February 2024 was 3.2c warmer than average here, yet December 2015 was almost 5c warmer. August should also have a record on par with July, rather than being almost a degree cooler.
  4. Frigid If anything, that shows that May and November seem to be 'underperforming' relative to the months either side. Almost 20c in April yet only 21c for May, when June is above 25c. I'd have though May would be capable of 22+ and Nov 14-15c.
  5. CryoraptorA303 Most plants would probably be killed. The warmest months by mean... Jan: 2007 (10.5/5.1c) Feb: 2024 (12.2/6.0c) Mar: 2017 (14.1/6.6c) Apr: 2011 (19.7/8.6c) May: 1992 (21.0/10.2c) Jun: 1976 (25.5/13.7c) Jul: 2006 (28.2/16.7c) Aug: 2022 (27.0/15.9c) Sep: 2023 (24.4/14.7c) Oct: 2005 (17.8/11.3c) Nov: 1994 (13.6/8.4c) Dec: 2015 (13.7/8.9c)
  6. CryoraptorA303 It was recording during the 1960s, March 2013 was colder than March 1962 by average max. 6.9c in 2013 vs 7.4c in 1962. March 1962 apparently was colder by mean though, 3.4c vs 4.1c. Heathrow's coldest months on record are... Jan: 1963 (0.8/-4.6c) Feb: 1986 (1.7/-2.7c) Mar: 1962 (7.4/-0.6c) Apr: 1986 (10.9/3.2c) May: 1996 (15.1/5.9c) Jun: 1972 (17.5/9.0c) Jul: 1954 (19.2/11.7c) Aug: 1956 (18.8c/10.9c) Sep: 1952 (16.4/7.6c) Oct: 1974 (11.0/5.0c) Nov: 1952 (7.5/1.6c) Dec: 2010 (3.9/-1.5c) A year with those months would be catastrophic. I imagine most plant life would be absolutely obliterated, and many would probably leave the country.
  7. danm I feel that May will be duller than average, though it can't be worse than this April.
  8. Summer8906 If it was muggy and cloudy then the minimum would be considerably warmer than 9c. 21c/9c in May sounds like it would be fairly clear.
  9. danm I'd rather the late April sunshine was saved for May. This April has been catastrophic for sunshine and doesn't deserve any more. Any amount that would count towards May's total is needed to finally get an average or sunny month.
  10. danm March 2013 was Heathrow's coldest March on record. Average max of 6.9c was 4.8c below average. That's December 2010 (-4.9c), April 2011 (+4.7c), July 2018 (+4.4c) and December 2015 (+4.9c) territory.
  11. danm Yes, but tomorrow is a one off. We have to wait a while still for it to be stable 6-8 hours of sun a day with average or above temps.
  12. Don From the 7th it'll be the first time in a long time that we will be getting normal levels of sunshine.
  13. According to this forecast, the long awaited arrival of typical springlike sky conditions won't arrive until 7th May.
  14. Weather-history London averaged just above 18c in May in the mid to late 1800s, and Cambridge probably not too different. I can't imagine anyone would have considered 21c oppressive, even then.
  15. Weather-history How can a 21c high with a 9c low be considered oppressively warm all day, in May?
  16. damianslaw Average rainfall and sunshine for spring at Heathrow: Rainfall: 127mm Rain days: 25 days Sunshine: 508 hours Compared with Mar-Apr 2024 so far... Rainfall: 154mm Rain days: 24 days Sunshine: 216 hours For May to make up for spring so far, it will need to have pretty much zero rainfall and around 290 hours of sun, and that is just to scrape the seasonal average.
  17. 2014 is the wettest year on record at Heathrow with 860mm, though there is a high chance that this year will overtake it. An astonishing 305mm already, with 8 months of the year still to go. Those 8 months include the 1st, 2nd and 4th wettest months of the year on average.

  19. SunnyG Soon it'll be late May, then mid June. Then maybe July...
  20. I wonder if we will get a 3rd 200% rainfall month in a row, in the last few days of April? Now up to 69.0mm for the month, ridiculous. 2024 will finish far wetter than average, calling it now. There is no realistic way we will only get another 300mm all year.
  21. If it now didn't rain at all for the next 10 weeks, we would still be above the YTD rainfall average for 2024. Ridiculous.
  22. Feb-Apr rainfall percentage vs average here: Feb: 223% Mar: 219% Apr so far: 162% Already seen 305mm in 2024, so half of our annual average not even 4 months into the year.
  23. WYorksWeather If we had 120% from May to Sep, we would be on the following vs (average). So it would get us back above the running average, but such a summer would be one of the sunniest on record and is highly unlikely. We also need all of those months to be significantly drier than average as well. Jan: 77 (61) Feb: 52 (79) Mar: 103 (125) Apr: 120? (177) May: 250 (208) Jun: 250 (208) Jul: 262 (218) Aug: 242 (202) Sep: 188 (157) Jan-Sep: 1544 (1435)
  24. baddie We would need something sunnier than May 2020 to balance out March and Aprils lack of sunshine, and that isnt going to happen. Assuming a dullish May with 170ish hours of sun, we would need a repeat of summer 2022 and then comfortably the sunniest September on record just to get back to average for the year. April is now above 50mm at Heathrow, the 11th consecutive month. When are we going to see some sub 20mm months?
  25. Wade People don't expect hot and tropical summers, they expect normal summers with highs of 22-26c most days, most days dry and a decent amount of sunshine. This April has been exceptionally poor for sunshine, and we are well short of the running annual average already, by almost 150 hours in just 4 months.
