Looks like the.models that had it south were right on this occasion unfortunately.

Sigh, I did hope not but mended the wobbly fence 'just in case'. After '87 I never take chances if a gale is forecast. However.... plenty of time for it to move further NE yet. Early on I thought they had Ophelia's track wrong but it moved further north west fairly rapidly so could still happen this storm moves to where it was forecast too.

Please move Brian, you aren't wanted in Southern England! Seriously though, I hope it does move a little north-easterly soon as I still have apples and pears on my trees!

It wasn't un-technically a hurricane either. It was a European windstorm that underwent rapid cyclogenesis and got amplified somewhat by the presence of a sting jet.

This is, as you say, normal british weather - just in the upper range of it's possibilities is all.

Haha! So says someone who lives in the Midlands and didn't experience the event!

"normal british weather" I don't think so!!! I am undoubtedly far, far older than you and NEVER before was what I experienced that night in any way, shape or form, "normal british weather!" My mother was 60 years old at the time and she would also agree! Never before in LIVING MEMORY had ANYONE in Southern England  experienced winds like that! Maybe in the Highlands of Scotland but NEVER in Southern Britain!

115 mph is NOT normal Southern weather for sure!

The wonderful irony. The weather could not have timed in better!

Oh I so laughed at that! I remember the original 'there isn't' and although it wasn't technically a hurricane the hurricane force winds gusting to 115mph in my region could have fooled anyone. It did me!!! This time,..... oh the irony that it actually IS a hurricane on the way!

Sorry to anyone in the danger areas, it isn't funny at all for them and having been there, and got the postcard you have ALL my sympathy.

has the storm turned west a little ...looking like it on sat 24

It certainly looks like it one here! Wow, I am thankful for that but still feel very sorry for anyone in Ireland who may be seriously impacted from this! It looks like the computer models may have got it correct after all! Just me that is mistrusting of modern technology. Blame it on pensioner bias! LOL.

Hi coldfingers1 I live in Pembroke, At the most we will get 70+ mph wind gusts more so on the coast than in Pembroke Dock, Trees may come down and as I recall for the last time we had storms this intense we kept our power and were ok. By Tuesday we will at the most be "mopping up" I sympathise with your worry, I'm sure your folks will be fine and if they want to listen to whats going on to tune into Radio Pembrokeshire, it's brilliant for when a storm is coming in. It's going to get a bit blustery for a while tomorrow and the Cleddau Bridge will probably shut. I'm sure they will be safe. I certainly don't want to make light of the situation but I'm sure we'll all be ok, just inconvenienced. Me (the mad bugger that I am) am planning to go down Freshwest to see what the storm surge brings... Hugs to you x

Thank you for the reassurance. Problem is that since that dreadful night in '87 (I had to move my baby into our bedroom as the winds looked likely to blow the chimney down into the room where her cot was!) I have always be a little scared of severe storm warnings. Wow that baby is 31 now! Why I am scared of warnings I don't know as the last forecast I heard that day was 'light winds'. If I had heard a severe weather warning maybe I wouldn't have been so scared now. That night I lost total trust in forecasters and sadly it sticks!

Thanks Senlac Jack and BlessedWeather for your answers. I was woken in the night by some strong gusts and it is starting to gust more strongly now.

Pleased to have some sunshine this morning after all the rain yesterday which we sorely needed for the garden. So sick of watering it as it's a big garden! So I shall watch this webcam at 1:00pm today to catch high tide, not expecting too much excitement though. High is due at 1:23 and it is one of the bigger tides.

At least they haven't inflated the bouncy castle.

  8. It's been wet, wet, wet here all day and I had to stand at a graveside in the pouring rain this morning. Felt sorrier for the poor coffin bearers though as they had no hats and it seems nobody provided them with umbrellas or is that not allowed for funeral staff? Daft if not. Weather now sunny and warmish but I have been outside battening down the hatches for tomorrows wind as it seems that on the South Coast here we may have a bit of a storm. As for ones moaning about 25C, I was in Madrid in middle of July and the max temp was 42C! Now that is worth moaning about. But Hey, this is the Summer moans thread after all.
