  1. Jinkies! Heavy fine snow in Trafford Park. I didn't expect this. It's blowing about like crazy but there's plenty of it. Visibility's right down. 10p sized now. Sticking eveywhere but the roads.
  2. Interesting warning out now for the Pennines: I can't remember the last time I saw ice on power lines as a specific threat, if ever.
  3. It was just looking like a typical Manchester drizzly day here in Trafford Park - albeit frozen snowy drizzle - but it has just picked up and is snowing properly. Only sticking to raised surfaces though.
  4. They've just run out of places to grit but have promised overtime to all the drivers so they need somewhere to put it!
  5. Trafford Park right now: Hmm, looks heavier than it shows in the pics.
  6. Wow, if that's extreme caution I'd love to see you ramping! Personally I'm worried that there will be too much snow to get up from Manchester to go skiing in the Lakes.
  7. I've noticed that no-one's location is showing on their posts at the moment. Have I turned that feature off or is it broken or disabled for some reason? It's very useful, especially when trying to interpret people's hopecasting in situations like these!
  8. Cold front coming through here now, very heavy burst of rain.
  9. Lucky you. It was frosty and brightish first thing in south Manc, but has steadily fogged up since then. Temp wobbled up from -1 to 2ish, now back down to 1C. Visibility below 250m in Trafford Park. Looks like a similar story at the airport.
  10. There's a very timely hurricane-themed XKCD today, with snippets from the NHC advisories on Epsilon and Zeta in 2005: http://xkcd.com/1126/
  11. Pretty much the same. Use less sugar as they're inherently sweet, and I read a recommendation to only let them soak for about a month, then drain and let it mature for a couple more months or it can be rather woody. Made some 2 years ago and it was lovely, got some more on the go now. Anyone used "Polish Spirit" instead of gin/vodka? It's available at 75/90% alcohol - do not drink neat! - so the end product is much stronger.
  12. Yeah, patchy rain in Manchester, nothing special so far, but completely overcast and 21C, that is unusual.
  13. Hmmm, looks good/interesting in the north west. Think I might refasten the tarp that's keeping the rain out of my garage!
  14. Not many to be seen in Manchester, but I travelled down to Somerset over the weekend and there were plenty there, including the first Peacock I've seen for a while. Stopped en route in Gloucestershire somewhere and there were lots there too. Earwigs now, we have plenty of those. Never seen so many. Lifted a rock in the garden and thought I'd disturbed an ants' nest.
  15. Here comes the rain again... 7mm in an hour of what looked like heavy drizzle at Chorlton. That station was offline this morning when we got another 3mm that barely registered on the radar, but shows up at Salford. Is this the start of the frontal wave? Another 24 hours of this and we'll be swimming.
  16. Rain stopped in Trafford Park, looks like the sun will be out soon...
  17. Patience. There's a pronounced westerly to northerly breeze across much of England right now. Until it goes easterly later in the week it will remain merely much nicer than last week. Here in Manchester it looks to be blowing quite strongly.
  18. Remarkable hail in Trafford Park 10 mins ago. Pea size, and beautifully lit by the sun breaking out as the shower moved away: millions of little white spots all over the sky. Should be over MAN airport by now, I think they'll pause take-offs until that's cleared.

  20. Another hopeless rainfall forecast from the GFS again today. Totals of 15-20mm were showing in the last couple of days. Total at Old Trafford cricket ground? 3.3mm since midnight. The local forecast right now, based on the 1200 run, shows 4mm in each 3 hour period. It just has no handle on the fact that south Manchester is low-lying, surrounded by hills, and we get the opposite of orographic lift: the rain just fizzles to drizzle as the airflow descends the hills. One day I'll learn and not rely on it...
  21. Thunder heard in very heavy rain/sleet shower in Manchester.
  22. Let's face it, we're not going to see a Mini looking like that here this winter!
