  1. Wet in Manchester, cooler than yesterday, but still nowhere near cold. Is that a wave developing on the front?
  2. It certainly is. It went absolutely wild in Manchester at about 13:15 for about 5 minutes. Torrential rain, being blown about so hard that the air was filled with spray, visibility terrible. Windows on all 4 sides of the office are soaked due to eddies and turbulence.
  3. I'm missing the dropdown navigator that used to appear at the bottom of each page, with all the forum folders listed in it. It was very useful for navigating without having to drill down from the top every time. Any chance of getting it back?
  4. 15C, windy and chucking it down. That should keep the looters inside tonight.
  5. Hail, heavy rain and a couple of flashes and bangs in Trafford Park, Manchester now.
  6. Have a look at the article here at Highly Allochthonous. It essentially notes that the areas where most damage and deaths occur are not the same as those with the most tornadoes. Where tornadoes are commonest, people do build to withstand them, or at least have a secure reinforced or underground shelter. Elsewhere, is it worth building something for a once in 40 year event? There are photos here of totally destroyed brick houses too. Andrew
  7. Light rain in Manchester now. Not much, but it's a start.
  8. Several fires in parts of Ireland that would normally be far too wet to burn: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2011/0501/breaking15.html while Lancashire is burning for the third day: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-13252340
  9. Miserable in Manchester, the temperature has steadily dropped all day under a thin blanket of freezing fog. Now -1 at Old Trafford. Andrew
  10. They're very localised, dry here. Andrew
  11. Well, after more than an inch of rain this week, the soil here is still quite dry, below the top layers. So another wet week would be useful, but can it stop then please, the kids are off school now! Andrew
  12. Most locations in south Manchester are at just 13mm for July so far. Yesterday gave 2 torrential cloudbursts that lasted about a minute each. We're in a very dry spot, we get the opposite of orographic lift, being in a basin, surrounded by hills to the NW, N, E, S and SW. The last few days have finally given rain that penetrates the soil, but we need a lot more before another dry spell comes along. As long as the hosepipe ban lasts (1995-96 lasted 14 months), we will always need the rain. Andrew
  13. Still waiting for real rain in low-lying south Manchester. Saturday's rain to the west never made it this far, and this morning's rain has almost missed, the heavy stuff has all passed to the east. Light rain all morning, but I doubt it's more than a couple of mm. The garden is parched, my allotment is dust, glad I bought a barrow bag to shift proper volumes in the wheel barrow. Andrew
  14. Woohoo! It's raining in Manchester. Enough to help the lawn, but not enough to fill the reservoirs. Andrew
  15. Sewers here in south Manchester are starting to stink, no rain running through to wash it all away. Andrew
  16. http://www.lccc.co.uk/weatherstation/ shows an increase in rainfall of 62% since Friday at Old Trafford. From 0.8 to 1.3mm. Andrew (The yearly figure of 18.5 mm is since the start of April.)
  17. Still a pile in the car park at Old Trafford: Photo taken on Monday, but it was stil there yesterday. Andrew
  18. Still a huge pile in the car[arks at Old Trafford football ground. All ploughed up to free up those valuable parking spaces - £10 a head. Must get a photo before it melts. Andrew
  19. Mmmm, I'm optimistic for later. The thin fog that rolled in this morning is keeping the temperature from rising. From a low of -3 it's still freezing now in Trafford Park. The only question is whether that band of precipitaion can keep goping this far, it's moving very slowly. Andrew
  20. It can't possibly beat the 5th though, can it?!!! Andrew
  21. Manchester Ship Canal has frozen right across from the Lowry to IWMN, it was open water yesterday with some ice at the margins. Andrew
  22. More snow please: -5 is quite cold enough. My boiler is dripping and cuts out occasionally! Andrew
  23. Wonderful conditions. For the first time in my 7 Manchester winters, I have 6 inches in Chorlton, Manchester. Stopped now. Started yesterday: just after midnight: This morning: At last! Andrew
  24. Sadly, that's just today's unexpired advisory. Andrew
