I'm not sure whether any of you have family or friends at the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea but, as a former leader, I have every sympathy with the Scouts there trying to cope with extreme heat and (I assume) humidity. I also applaud the decision of the leaders to jump ship and relocate the Scouts in hotels following numerous cases of heat exhaustion and sunstroke.

    Meanwhile in this country......

My son applied, but didn't get a place. Tbh, I'm quite relieved now!

Meanwhile, we finished packing the car in light rain at 7 this morning, and have driven South in constant rain, some heavy, now we're near Huntingdon and it's still raining. Heading for the Suffolk coast, expecting strong winds around 2. Storm forecast later for there too.

22.4 mm measured this morning for previous 24hrs.   July total currently 312.6 mm and another day to go.  This July is already the 7th wettest month since we started daily readings here for Met Office in 1968.     We've never had monthly totals over 300mm during April- August before,   So this is extraordinary.

Countryside and garden in an appalling mess.     Is anyone managing to grow and harvest any food crops?

I've had tons of blackberries and my raspberries are the best since I planted them in lockdown. They both love good moisture and aren't bothered by the temp. Early plums were ok but not very sweet. Victorias are just coming ripe. Most of my apples seem to be getting knocked off by the wind. Squirrels got my pears very early, I think they were looking for moisture when it was dry in May/June, remember that time?

Veg-wise courgettes are good this year, just pulled out a 2kg marrow I missed! Leeks are looking good, beans growing well but not fruiting yet.

Tomaties would like a bit more warmth I think but growing strongly.

Yeah, yet another day of bleak outlook. There’s just no end to it. All the forecasters have to do at the moment is copy and paste the following:

Showers interspersed by bright spells. Perhaps a rumble of thunder. Maximum temperature, 20C.

That’s it. It’s the same every day. Poor for July. I guess this is the first month of our 11 month autumn then. August is always poor, summer is over.

Not every day, the weekend looks very windy for July, especially Sunday. West Kirby:
