  1. We're in an absolute drought as of today, our last rain was two weeks ago. Only 8mm so far this month, after several dry months. From my closest reliable wunderground station

Weather Underground provides local & long-range weather forecasts, weather reports, maps & tropical weather conditions for locations worldwide.

    Jan 59mm

    Feb 193mm

    Mar 27mm

    Apr 39mm

    May 89mm

    Jun 45mm

    Jul 8mm

I would normall say we flip equally between dry and wet periods, but in terms of duration, the dry periods look like they outlast the wet ones. A soggy month like February  is fine for filling up the reservoirs, but not so good for long-term soil moisture.

I can see the results in my garden, where the undergrowth is now filled with bon-dry dead leaves and everything crackles underfoot. Seeing the horrific scenes from Wennington yesterday made me well aware how a similar fire would rip through in this area too.

Sad sight in local Tesco this morning with all fridges empty and notices saying that they had given up working in the heat. Presumably many food items thrown away as a result. I assume this is not an isolated incident.

No it isn't. I've also heard of Tesco fridge failures in Stretford, Bar Hill (near Cambridge) and Banbury. Sounds like they went for a cheap contract that has now blown up in their faces.

A bit of a surprise to be woken up by the sound of pretty heavy rain during the night and the sight of two soaked through garden chairs when I opened the blinds.

I think I need to study the detail of the forecasts a bit more.

anyway it looks like it’s cleared through now so I suppose this is where the heatwave actually starts.

Interestingly, the rain wasn't forecast quite as far south as it came, I wonder what other details the models are going to get wrong?

  4. At the bottom of this IT article about the forthcoming heatwave is a discussion about how the official record from 1887 is probbaly bogus anyway.

Ireland could see hottest day since records began on Monday with 34 degrees forecast

The highest reliable temperature is the 32.5 degrees recorded on June 29th 1976 at Boora, Co Offaly.

The paper abstract is here (stll under review).

  5. I'm torn between going in to the office on Mon/Tues, where there is A/C, and staying home. The cycle in should be OK in the morning, but coming home could be a wee bit sweaty!

Just trying to remember how it felt the last time I experienced mid-30s on holiday, it was July 2009 in southern France when a big pulse of hot air blew in from Africa. Right on the coast it was 36C for a day. With a strong wond blowing it was like standing on front ofa  hair-dryer all day. In the holiday photos the kids all look shiny with sweat, but it evaporated straightaway so it was never dripping off us. It's definitely going to be weird having those conditions at home.

  6. I don't buy it! 850 shows a huge outlier spike:

    and the 2m temp follows:

while the pressure shows a huge sudden drop:

but there's next to no rain in the top two charts. I would expect a big rain spike too in that case, it looks like a low-pressure sucking up warm moist air from the south which would normally indicate big storms.

Anyway they're all in the chaotic region of the ensembles so I would give them no credence until the pack starts to agree and it all tightens up. And even then, in winter I've seen far off outlier cold signals become close up consensus cold predictions, then fade back to average as zero-hour arrives. Don't be disappointed if the same happens here.
