  1. I'm sorry you have to experience them where / when they're not welcome. It is perfectly sensible to fear them, after all, the associated hazards: flash flooding, large hail, strong winds, fires etc are potentially fatal. There was a time when I did not like thunderstorms, it was the unpredictability of a lightning strike that did it, intra cloud being my least favourite. But fear eventually turned into obsession, hopefully you'll hate them less one day
  2. Is there time for me to get my continental plume out and blow it in?
  3. That does get me thinking, in all honesty, the UK must be a great place to visit. If you are to put yourself in the shoes of someone that is not from here; someone that's accustomed to months of 35° C+ summers and / or -15°C- winters, the UK climate alone would seem idyllic. That's before we get on to the beautiful national parks, cute villages, history, the variety of dialects and accents, oh and London of course, one of the most important cities in the world. Northern Italy it is then XD
  4. Hey there. In the debt-free, savings possessed-future I do fancy the idea of emigrating. Spain, albeit a cliche, will be the perfect compromise as I'm learning the lingo and it's not too far from the folks. Plus, storms potential of course Any similar thoughts?
  5. Welcome gazbusa. I hope Staffordshire gets its owed share of storms this summer. I remember some absolute stonkers when I lived in Stoke, particularly the 90s
  6. I can see Aberdeen and the North Sea is getting a rush hour smattering at the moment. Oh I think I need to live in the North Sea
  7. Still here and hurting. I am prepared to drive if I have the free time. But trundling up to Rochdale for a handful of embedded spherics is not what I have in mind
  8. Very likely considering the rainfall that the radar is showing round there. I didn't hear it so must be quite east
  9. It's the tacograph. EU legislation, the cell has to take a break every ninety minutes. As for real answers, I've no idea sadly. Hopefully someone on here will have them, however my understanding is that lightning is a phenomenon nowhere near fully explained
  10. Well said Walsall wood snow. The radar seems to be the best indication of what will happen, the forecast is too vague. Tonight I think I got conned by the sky itself - twice. Turning rancid yellow with low scud, I thought ooh this time we're on. The photo was where I heard a distant rumble at about 8pm today. Light rain followed
  11. Meanwhile in Manchester I've given up and started to make my own lightning SVID_20170719_095428.mp4
  12. I'm going to sleep. But the window is open.... don't.let me down, ionised alarm clock
  13. The frequency of posts in this thread seems to be in tandem with the weather's electrical discharges
  14. It seems to be necessary on this unpredictable little island. I remember staying over in Bristol on Saturday 29th aug 2015 witnessing what I thought was the apocalypse only to get rain and gusts. The Midlands and the North got the lightning, precisely where I'd travelled from
  15. Plus there are actual vantage points in the Peak District unlike Manchester. I'll have to make do w... a midnight drive could be on the cards
  16. When I read posts, check the forecasts, and withstand the humidity I become disproportionately disappointed when a storm blows over (as in passes by 100 miles away) or doesn't even materialise at all in the British isles? The disappointment is lasting and very akin to how a football fanatic's evening feels when England are inevitably knocked out of a tournament. From reading the convective posts I get a sense a lot of people take it badly. Is there any science or research behind this? Is it simply the equivalent of a hobby or sport with a summer season?
  17. The url is wrong btw. It should be https://youtu.be/EWTFIcpPOCM
  18. Hey there. I grabbed a still from a YouTube video of a storm in Bournemouth and noticed some odd artifacts from the moment a close strike hits: Any ideas what these are? The original video is below and the screenshots were taken from 8:52. I'm sure the author won't mind me mentioning this here
  19. You know you'll watch the towers of hope being built by the West country only to have funnels and all sorts break out behind your back in the Midlands. It happened to me when I took an impulsive August trip to Bristol
  20. Nice bit of exploring supacell. I thought I was stubborn to throw in the convective towel but you kept on to the bitter end got rewarded
  21. I'm gonna put some money on no. Oh the lack of lightning has finally got to me!
