I'm glad 1976 is gone, it's longevity was astonishing but has no match for the pure potency of today's style heatwaves. At least it opens up the competition.

Surely you would've seen something in February-March 2018?
A dusting, looked like a hard frost.

I Knew the Southeast has missed out over recent years but didn't realise It had been that bad.
We have been very lucky with battleground snow events, obviously 50 mile or so south of here will have had rain/sleet.
I haven't seem more than a sugar coating since March 2013, I'm aware though that my location doesn't help.

I don't think that's what he meant. As I understand it he was stating that it was correct that the current outlook was as such, not that this was locked in by any means
Oh right, fair play.
A blustery sunshine and showers type day here, nice cloudscape around and 11c

Correct.
I really hope we get the sunshine, would appreciate the Apricity.
Not correct, you have no idea what's going to happen in a week, and neither do the models.

Definitely have to be lucky with them, fizzled to a fart up here when it went over. To get lightning is definitely a plus as winter squalls usually aren’t conducive.
Autumn and early winter Squalls are quite good here sometimes as the sea temps are still relatively warm, good for convection on the coast.

Just been through it and come out the other side.
Have know better Squalls to be honest. Rain spike for a minute and a few gusty howling moments and that was it. Radar looks far more impressive
Best squall of the year here, haven't seen white out rain and hail like that for a few years with the added bonus of thunder and lightning. All depends on if you hit the sweet spot or if you find yourself in a gap I suppose.

Quite a wild evening here, in the end. More rain than expected, with more to come. May as well top up the yearly total before it resets in 25 hours.
Wild and exciting weather action!

I'm not sure whether I had a single good thunderstorm in the UK throughout 2023. I had one or two abroad, but in the UK I think it was just the occasional rumble of thunder in a shower.
Wonder if another symptom of UK climate change is less cold uppers, hence less thunder?
I don't know, I usually only get thunderstorms from warm uppers being Spanish plumes.

Thought i'd also do a top 10 countdown of the most interesting weather days this year from my pov:
10) 9th March - 7cm of snow on roofs
9) 2nd December - freezing fog then 2-3cm of snow falling in half an hour early morning.
8. 29th November - very low atmospheric fog / inversion during morning starting right at my doorstep.
7) 9th July - thunderstorm in Telford with decent structure and was not chasing storms specifically.
6) 9th September - impressive convection in Lincolnshire and night time lightning.
5) 18th June - well formed shelf cloud on my birthday near Melton Mowbray.
4) 18th September - strong thunderstorm, closest to CG lightning but couldn't catch / see visible CG.
3) 12th June - incredible CG lightning display, and also cloud structure.
2) 9th May - second closest i've been to CG lightning, amazing cloud structure.
1) 11th June - One of the strongest thunderstorms i've seen since 2020 or even 2018, picture perfect updrafts, before entering storm with constant thunder and prolific lightning.
The top 7 are all thunderstorm related, with the bottom 3 snow / cold related.
A special mention to February 6th which gave the best sunset of the year with an amazing afterglow of cirrocumulus clouds.
Sounds like you had quite the year for storms, think I only had one storm here this year early in the morning around 6am some time in June.

Actually quite a nice day down here, blue skies, some clouds 12c but windy.

The never-ending monotonous, grey, dismal, wet, boring, stale weather pattern just keeps on keeping on! I find it so weird that the only places that can scrape a few sunny days are the same places all month! South West Ireland and the high up Eastern areas of UK like Northumberland, Aberdeen & East Yorkshire. Absolutely no change to this pattern all month. Today was another day where the sun was meant to come out but the satellite suggests otherwise! South West Ireland looks like clearing out again as usual though lol. Boooooooring.
I suppose it makes sense if you think about it, these places you mentioned being sunnier or 'less cloudy' are in the Lee of mountains like the Pennines and the Highlands in predominately W/SW winds. Down here we have nothing to block SW moisture laden winds

I was talking about the 1991-2020 average which is surely more relevant, but that's a milestone as well of course. Although I'm pretty sure every month will have had 10-11 months above the 1969-1990 average since around 2014.
Oh right, fair enough.

We must surely be above 8.1°C by now, even factoring in the brief cold spell.
I believe December 2022 was the only month of the year that was colder than average, with every single month apart from it above. This year I think April and July were below average, with the rest aside from August and November above. Those two were right around average. So that's overall eight above average, two average and two below average. And yet many will consider 2023 a mild year! Likely because of the timing of the two below average and average months.
According to the cet, every month this year has been above average, its looking like the first year ever to have all 12 months above the 69-90 averages.

Second warmest is Dec 1934 with a CET of 8.1C.. goes to show how insane the Dec 2015 was.
I think we'll make it at least in the top 15... the contrasts of this month to last year.
Along with Dec 1974 also at 8.1c I think.

Yeah. When I was a kid I loved cold and snow but as I have got older the more I dislike it! Back in the day it didn't matter. Now it just gets in the way of everything and just causes disruption. Having said all that I can't deny it does look stunning if a decent snowfall overnight followed by a Sunny blue sky morning . It's just when it starts to thaw and the grit and everything.
Fair enough, never thought I'd see you say it! I haven't seen a good snowfall since 2013 so it seems I'm getting slightly impatient, where as I know summer warmth is a given down here! I'll be getting an early spring in Morocco on the 8th of January so I'm happy!

This is not a moan. More of a celebration. By Sunday 7th Jan we already have an extra 18 minutes of day light in the evening. A sure sign of things going in the right direction as we once again tilt closer to the sun. The darkness of November/December fading away.
As much as I love cold weather in winter, this year I seem to find myself yearning for early spring.

Today was warmer than the 5th August this year.. let that sink in for a bit.
Not here it wasn't, nowhere near!

Must feel weird the areas further north and in the Lee of mountains getting above 15c at this time of year, in my location we hit a ceiling at around 12-13c and seem to never go higher no matter how warm the airmass is. Must be the sea air.
