  1. Nice to see the snow falling here during the night. Still hanging around here at the moment but expect it will melt later before turning to ice. MAD thread has the usual idiots saying 'winters over' , blah blah. Will they never learn? Or even speak English as they seem to have their own code half the time which I find infantile lol.

Looking forward to the next snowy spell anyhow as I'm sure it won't be too long. Hopefully around the Xmas period.

I’ve been a member on this weather forum for 10 years plus...then a couple of others before that. I can honestly say, and no offence to anyone, but the ability to accurate predict weather more than a week out as not really improved at all. Teleconnections as seen as a step forward but I think for our small country in the location it is in I doubt wether anyone could ever foresee our weather as it’s so difficult. If our experts were tasked to predict weather in larger land masses like the US I think the success would be much higher. Stick your head out the window is the way forward for us unfortunately

I completely agree and model watching provides very, very little information apart from wind and rain which is, unfortunately, our main weather.

There is some truth in that (sort of). There’s an 18th century Welsh proverb ‘Eira mân, eira mawr‘ which loosely translates as ‘little snow, big snow’....

When you have big snowflakes it means conditions are much more marginal and it’s much more likely to turn to rain or melt as there’s probably milder air trying to mix in...Smaller flakes usually means that the cold air is much more entrenched and the snow would last for longer like with the beast from the east in 2018 when we had fine powdery snow but it accumulated significantly

My mate is still a knob though.

  4. Well I still think Thursday and Friday could be exciting.

On a similar subject. As today has been snowing very finely, almost dust like, I remember an old friend once told me that 'small snow means big snow'. I.e small flakes equals more lying snow'. At first I never believed him. But after years of following the weather I've come to realise that's he's a complete knob.
