  1. There will be skiing up there this year easily until May Cheggers........lots of people there skiing and snowboarding. Unfortunately the Funicular railway was closed because it is covered in snow.
  2. I was up at the Cairngorm Ski resort today. Amazing amount of snow..........this was the snow bank cut through by the ploughs on the access road.
  3. Met Office has just updated its info for Coldest UK winter for over 30 years 1 March 2010 Provisional figures from the Met Office show that the UK winter has been the coldest since 1978/79. The mean UK temperature was 1.5 °C, the lowest since 1978/79 when it was 1.2 °C. Since mid-December cold weather has often dominated much of the country, with spells of snow and very low temperatures. From southern England to northern Scotland, heavy snow caused travel disruption at times through the season. Overnight temperatures fell to -22.3 °C at Altnaharra, Highland – the lowest UK minimum since 1995. Long–term average winter temperature (1971-2000) Provisional mean temperature (1 December to 24 February) 2009/10 Coldest winter since (mean winter temperature) Coldest winter (since 1914) UK 3.7 °C 1.51 °C 1978/79 (1.17 °C) 1962/63 (-0.18 °C) England 4.1 °C 2.12 °C 1978/79 (1.43 °C) 1962/63 (-0.56 °C) Northern Ireland 4.3 °C 2.05 °C 1962/63 (1.51°C) 1962/63 (1.51 °C) Scotland 2.7 °C 0.24 °C 1962/63 (0.16 °C) 1962/63 (0.16 °C) Wales 4.2 °C 2.09 °C 1978/79 (1.64 °C) 1962/63 (-0.33 °C)
  4. Had a poke around the Met Office site . No surprises for January just wondering now how February fared by comparison. January 2010 The averaging period used for the following assessment was 1971-2000. Scotland diary of highlights The month saw mainly unsettled weather. The first half was very cold with frequent snowfalls and some sharp frosts. It then turned less cold until the last few days, when wintry showers returned to the north. Overall it was a cold month, with mean temperatures typically 2.5 °C below the 1971-2000 normal but closer to 1.5 °C below across the Western and Northern Isles. Provisionally, it was the coldest January since 1979 and the eighth coldest in a series from 1914. The number of days with air frost was the highest for January since 1985. Rainfall was generally well below average, particularly across the west where less than 50% of normal was recorded. Sunshine totals varied from somewhat below normal in the north-east to well above normal across western Scotland, where provisionally it was the third sunniest January in a series from 1929. UK overview The month was mostly unsettled, the first half being very cold with widespread snowfalls and some sharp frosts. After mid-month, temperatures rose to around normal before a return to colder conditions at month end. Overall, it was a very cold month with mean temperatures 2.5 to 3.0 °C below the 1971-2000 normal over England and Wales, 2.5 °C below over most of Scotland and 2.0 to 2.5 °C below over Northern Ireland. Provisionally, it was the coldest January over the UK since 1987 and equal eighth coldest in a series from 1914. Rainfall was well below normal over many western areas, especially west Scotland and Cumbria, and close to normal elsewhere.
  5. Good morning PC and welcome. Many of us on here are interested amateurs and there are one or two who are much better informed. I would agree January has certainly felt much colder with consistant colder temps particularly during the first couple of weeks. Hopefully someone will give you the info you want in due course.
  6. Morning All, -5C......beautiful sunny morning. Dry week on the whole with frosty nights but the risk of the odd shower cant be ruled out. Looks like the weekend could be the turning point for temps to start increasing a little. But too far out to be sure just yet.
  7. 1C and avery slow thaw continues. Still plenty of lying snow. Potential for more showers later this week...... Read Blizzardo's post and checked the ensembles for this area. FI during the rest of March looks bitter with -15C's. Wonder if it will come off?
  8. I know its well into FI but agree with your comments Catch and LS. I would put money on it staying much as now with the odd very cold night thrown in for good measure over the next couple of weeks! 0C and grey this morning. Edinburgh area still getting snow and looks heavier this morning!
  9. Brilliant link Mondy.........I would not like to dig that lot out with a wee shovel!!! Watched Soapbox Racing that is something else!!!
  10. oooooooooh my back has gone just looking at that!!
  11. Third day of almost continuous snow. Temp 0C and still snowing. People are not getting out to go to work this morning. Winter of 2009/2010 will go certainly down in history as a snowy one. I have seen more snow this year than for many years!
  12. I did look marginal and still does by sea level. We have almost 10 inces of snow.......with drifting. Still snowing. Were you planning up from Glasgow tonight? Maybe wiser to wait until tomorrow before attempting the trip! Roads are closed and railways blocked according to TV.
  13. 0C and still snowing. Will it or wont it turn to sleet? We shall see.
  14. Blizzard conditions now.......snow has become a lot heavier in the last hour
  15. -1C Snowed all night and still snowing. Quantities not huge around 6inches in total and blowing in wind. Set for the day.......and night. Hmmmmm maybe not.........just had a look and the dam figure goes up - maybe turn to sleet mid afternoon
  16. Thats two days away!!! I am talking about today and tomorrow. Agreed it could be marginal right on the coast though they often have temps couple of degrees higher I also appreciate what you say about the hazards for those who have to be out and about. I prefer to see a couple of days proper snow then nice and steadily thaw and disappear. I hate when is hangs around a freezes as slush!
  17. Agreed........another virutal slap from me
  18. Took the table pic 30 minutes ago and the second pic taken 5 minutes ago!!! No sign of let up!! Agreed the Glen Affric and Glen Strathfarrar are beautiful areas and will look stunning to day. Finally a "Be prepared" warning from Met Office Heavy Snow 1100 Wed 24 2359 Wed 24 Snow showers turning to more general outbreaks of snow today will be heavy at times giving accumulations 10 to 15cm in places especially over higher ground. The public are advised to take extra care and refer to Traffic Scotland for further advice on road conditions. Issued at: 0837 Wed 24 Feb
  19. Agreed Stormy, no sign of any warning at all from the Meto. I would say we have nearer 5 inches snow with heavy very fine snow now coming down. I was under the impression we may get a dusting this afternoon but most of the precipitation was for the central belt. Just been looking at the ensembles for this area and they are showing heavy snow again for the 26th!!
  20. Much as I love snow, it is horrible having to drive in it and see so many accidents. Just hope there are no serious injuries!
  21. Hooray, I cant believe it......... temps currently -5C and snowing heavily on a frozen surface!! :yahoo:Already have about 4cms
  22. :cray::wallbash::wallbash:its no fair!!! Most of it misses us AGAIN!
  23. A wee ramp would not go amiss and a dumping of the white stuff would go down a treat.......:excl: I'm almost afraid to hope - especially as the models have been most unreliable over the last three weeks even as far as 48hours out!!
  24. Morning folks........another cold one -9C at 9am. I have been suffering with Netweather withdrawal symptoms. No Broadband over the weekend so rang and ended talking to a young man in India who obviously hadn't a clue what was wrong!!! Told that a visit from a BT engineer would happen first thing this morning.........but at 8.30am I am back on line and no visit from BT. Obviously a problem at the exchange and nobody on duty to rectify or check where the problem was on the line! I am so dependent on the internet and hated it. Would rather do without TV. (can get internet TV anyway..lol) Anyway back to the weather, there looks like there is a possibility for some snow wednesday/thursday this week in northern areas, but again nothing set in stone!
  25. Agreed the climate in Scotland is as varied as it is between North of England, Kent and Cornwall. Scotland would need to be divided into preferably four sectors for forecasting. A few beefy showers around our coastlines Some approaching Moray now.
