  1. Historic California storm closes Interstate 5 at the Grapevine WWW.LATIMES.COM Already dumping snow in Northern California, the storm is set to intensify as it moves to Southern California, bringing blizzard warnings to the mountains.
  2. DMI seem to be missing some of the Baltic ice. I've followed them for years and they usually concur more or less: Ice conditions - Finnish Meteorological Institute EN.ILMATIETEENLAITOS.FI The Baltic Sea ice charts of today, report of daily sea ice conditions in Finland and the ice extent.
  3. We had our coldest evening of this winter yesterday (though not quite our coldest temperature). The central heating was struggling with the cold before we went to bed but it did better this morning. We hit a low of -5.5C at around midnight but then started to warm up, rising about 2C in the next hour. We were closing in on positive temperatures shortly after dawn. There were several places in Yorkshire at -6C or -7C at midnight. Coldest I've found since was -8.2C near Harrogate. They were all much warmer by dawn. So, numerous Yorkshire stations recorded colder temperatures late yesterday evening then they did yesterday morning but morning saw positive temperatures at dawn or not long after. Further South and East in the UK, it continued to cool until dawn and was generally colder than the morning before. There is even the possibility that tonight will be colder than either of the previous two in a few limited spots of the East/Southeast where the cold air persists. There's already been a -8.0C hit but whether it keeps going or not down remains to be seen as warmer air slowly finishes moving across the country. /Assets/Images/logo-global.png Met Office WOW - WOW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK The UK Met Office Weather Observation Website (WOW). 4. Topcliffe -9.8C yesterday morning. A balmy -5.8C this morning.
  5. The snowsports thread seems to think it's already a lot better this week after recent snows that have taken runs open to over 50%. More is expected for Europe this week. It should see most Alpine runs open next week along with more widespread settled snow across Europe - not that all models are perfect! 6. We woke to a very light dusting of settled snow with -0.4C last night and we are just under 100 feet elevation in the Vale of York.
  7. We were surprised to wake up to a dusting of snow after -0.4C overnight. Did the snow happen on the 25th or 26th? Currently 1.7C and mostly cloudy but fairly bright..
  8. We've got an aunt of Mrs A visiting for lunch. She says her car indicated -17C two weeks ago when visiting her daughter up in the hills west of Edinburgh, where there was about 6 inches of snow, and that somebody up there had their car indicate -25C on their travels in the snowfields near Banff. Both are rather colder than the prevailing station reports but urban heat island effects were very pronounced at the time so I would not dismiss them as being unrealistic. Of course, you'd expect cars to report lower temperatures than stations at times so this does not mean it's been any colder than say, 2010, but it's still worth a comment, I think.
  9. There was a -10.4C near Chelmsford so its possible some in the Southeast only had their coldest night last night. We only just missed it here. Meanwhile rivers that have frozen are still freezing up further: Watch incredible footage of the frozen River Mawddach | cambrian-news.co.uk WWW.CAMBRIAN-NEWS.CO.UK https://www.itv.com/news/wales/2022-12-16/plummeting-temperatures-sees-rivers-and-lakes-freeze-over
  10. Manage now and there was a -12.4C at Linton, Cambridgeshire. There seems to be a big urban heat island differential everywhere. Rural temps look 5C+ lower than urban ones in lots of places so I suppose his car dropping from -8C to -14C as he drove into the countryside does not seem unreasonable. /Assets/Images/logo-global.png Met Office WOW - WOW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK The UK Met Office Weather Observation Website (WOW). 11. An acquaintance on social media said home was -8C but his car dropped to -14C on his travels so that's another very cold spot in Cambridgeshire somewhere. I can't get WOW to load at the moment. It must be busy.
  12. For Wales, I've seen -12.7C at Lampeter /Assets/Images/logo-global.png Met Office WOW - WOW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK The UK Met Office Weather Observation Website (WOW). WOW allows anyone to submit their own weather data, anywhere in the world.
  13. -14.5C in Gloucestershire and maybe a little more to come? /Assets/Images/logo-global.png Met Office WOW - WOW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK The UK Met Office Weather Observation Website (WOW). WOW allows anyone to submit their own weather data, anywhere in the world.
  14. Coldest I saw on WOW was -15.8C at Stobo in Peebles (el. 234m). The Grampians/Deeside, which had been coldest previously, had warmed up a good few degrees. I think there were several at -8C to -10C in Lakes, Lancashire, S.Wales, Gloucestershire but I can't suggest which was lowest in England. /Assets/Images/logo-global.png Met Office WOW - WOW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK The UK Met Office Weather Observation Website (WOW). 16. Crikey! Last night's low was -15.9C at 4am at Candacraig, nr Ballater (elevation 250m). Today's high was -11.9C at 2 pm. And already back to -14.9C just after 5pm. What's tonight going to drop to? /Assets/Images/logo-global.png Met Office WOW - WOW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK The UK Met Office Weather Observation Website (WOW). 18. Hudson Bay increased, as per MIA's comment, but it's notable that it increased in the North while the bit hugging southern coasts surprisingly early has melted away. I suggested the water looked too warm for the snow to overcome in the south and so it seems. It now probably means that Hudson is now back to about average after looking ahead of normal a couple of days ago.
  19. Thixendale in the Yorkshire Wolds is already down to +0.3C. I'm not a million miles away and skies are still completely cloud free so lower looks likely.
  20. And November starting okay. Both NE tributaries of Anchorage Bay are now showing ice. That seems a bit early? It's worth remembering, though, that recent years have seen N.Hemiphere snows start earlier AND FINISH EARLIER than previous decades. This year has not made its mind up yet, with extent already nearly half way to its peak.
  21. It's probably temporary but the low complex has pulled eastward leaving northerlies dragging down cold and snow from northern Greenland and the Canadian Archipelago. Western Hudson temperatures are a bit below normal - again, probably temporarily - but it means ice is advancing a few days early along the full length of the western Hudson Bay coast. More snow looks likely in coming days as another low crosses the Great Lakes, pulling up moister Gulf air to meet the current cold without necessarily displacing it. Polar Bears that frequent there will be happy with a potentially early start to hunting season but it's questionable if the spell of cold weather will continue.
  22. First signs of more sustained advances into Foxe Basin/North Hudson and even first signs of something along more southern Hudson. It seems a few days early and I don't think the latter will sustain as water seemed too warm before the snows. The appearance of large areas of 0-10% ice looks to be down to significant snow again as a complex multiple low system went though, dragging down cold from northern Greenland which is likely to be temporary.
  23. After a bit of a pause, North American areas are moving again. The recent snows look to have set up Northern Hudson Bay for good advances as the sea surface temperature has dipped to near zero or lower across much of the north and some slushy stuff looks to be starting to show. Big snows are modelled for this week right down to the Mexican border again. The last lot not did not stick much but Hudson now looks well-primed and it looks cold enough that most of Canada might be white when next week is done. North America seems to be doing much better this year on the whole, though it's only back to average after some poorer years and weather systems dropping lots of early snow don't necessarily correlate with sustained snows and cold through the season. This is more weather than climate. (Snows seem to be starting and finishing earlier in recent years - why?) Bering is seeing coastal see ice stick now.
  24. To get back on topic: There's lots of new snow and ice after a bit of a pause. The main pack has linked to Alaska/Yukon and the low that brought those northerlies has driven widespread snow down the western USA, almost to the Mexican border. There's a bonus the latest system bringing some westward expansion to Russia. Meanwhile, Laptev is filling in.
