  1. Traffic cameras show settled snow at Blakey Ridge atop the N. York Moors overnight and sleety snow at Greenhow Hill in the Yorkshire Dales in the last few minutes. 2. MIA - I've posted a couple of Scandinavian Blizzard vids on twitter, etc. thread. They are quite something if you watch them through. It's unusual to see them struggle with snow and that's ingoring the local record low temperatures in the odd place.
  3. The isotherms are absolute. The figures in bubbles are a historical mean, I think. Remember that the Gulf of Bothnia is almost fresh water. Salinity only approaches typical deep sea levels as you leave the Danish Straights
  4. Sweden low is 2C off the rcord and there's a weather warning for snow and wind tomorrow Finland, Sweden set this winter's cold records as temperature plummets to over minus 40 Celsius WWW.CTVNEWS.CA Finland and Sweden recorded the coldest temperatures of the winter Tuesday as thermometers plummeted to minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 Fahrenheit) as a result of a cold spell prevailing in the...
  5. Just a heads-up that radar shows showers on the N.York Moors and Dales are starting to turn wintery. Anyone that has not yet seen snow, but wants to, might want to look outside every now and then to check the showers as the temperature drops.
  6. Scandy needs to warm up. It's over 20C below normal in the Swedish mountains which is part of the reason why Baltic ice is so high and the whole point of my last post. I see nothing wrong with forecasts a couple of days ahead but I really don't see the point of considering 10-day forecasts.
  7. Yep - probably because North America looks well behind. This is Hudson Bay, for instance. Started earlier than normal in October after Canada got blanketed in snow - then did next to nothing for 4 weeks and is only now starting to get moving again.
  8. Ice is about 6 weeks ahead of the 2007-2021 average in the Baltic Sea - @33k/km2. Temperatures in the central Swedish mountains look to have dropped even lower so that suggests it might continue? I dread to think how cold we will get in the UK if we get another northeasterly wind before Eastern Europe and Russia warm up. 9. Ok, they all are. I've often been unsure which were Met Office and which were not. Does anyone have a link to where Met Office station output is aggregated, please, whether live or not?
  10. Only snowed 20 minutes or so, though. Now light drizzle. Still only 0.4C. I could imagine a healthy snowfall on hills before the rain comes.
  11. Been snowing 10 minutes here in the Vale of York and starting to settle, at 25m. Currently 0.4C after high of 1.7C. Our third bout of settled snow already this winter! Radar says it's raining. Radar always used to be spot on but has sometimes reported wintery showers as rain in the last couple of years.

  14. Today's high was +0.8C in my bit of the Vale of York and we still have traces of Wednesday's snow left. How could it stay foggy all day in that bitter breeze!? It's eased now, though, and it is already colder tonight than last night's low so we could well be on track for an ice day tomorrow unless we get some wind that can actually shift the fog. I like a flash of snow to feel like we've had a winter like anyone else but it's been so grey and cold today that I think I might have had my fill already. UK current temperatures now already look similar to this mornings lows - and lower in some areas. There are several -7s and -8s already in England and Wales. How far can they drop? /Assets/Images/logo-global.png Met Office WOW - Home Page WOW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK The UK Met Office Weather Observation Website (WOW). 15. I think Candacraig's high of -3.1C is not really off topic if it sets us up for another possible new low tonight. It is already down to -6.7C. There are several independents in Cumbria that look to have not reached 0C today, even if Shap did. I suspect somewhere in Vale of York fog will not have reached 0C. My garden peaked at 0.8C and I still have tiny bits of snow survived in the shade. My own personal low is -2.6C last night but that might go again tonight since it is currently -1.0C. It's getting into worrying territory. I had a burst pipe last year when a cold week culminated in around -6C and a previous one during March 2018 when it was similar but for two weeks. No colder for Yorshire after tonight, please!
  16. I think the urban lows in Lancashire are worth a mention - some -5s in greater Manchester and -6s in Warrington. I wonder when they last saw similar. Looks like the independent low in Wales is Is- Y- Coed with -8.5C.
  17. Shap looks to be rising now so it will probably take England's new low with -9.4C. There is a -7.9C and -8.2C at independents in Wales that have not bottomed yet.
  18. That original -7.9C at Bristol had some others nearby only a few degrees off when it was a calm night so seemed possible. The -8.7C looked more anomalous. It's -6C now while they're around 0C and there is a breeze which should even things up so it looks odd. In the absence of more information, I think there is too much doubt about this station and will not mention it again.
  19. We had a couple of fleeting and sparse snow showers this morning, after a thin coat overnight, and then a thaw, though the garage roof is still white. There is a sizeable cluster of new showers coming over the N.York Moors again tonight. Odd ones are making it through to York and beyond so some might get a top-up for morning.
  20. The one south of Bristol that had -7.9C a couple of days ago had -8.7C this morning. I'm not sure I trust it. Nearby had -3.8C but if it's usually coldest for that area, then it's not impossible. /Assets/Images/logo-global.png Met Office WOW - WOW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK The UK Met Office Weather Observation Website (WOW).
