Any chance this next faze of weather could become mild?

Not really interested in cold anymore this Winter. Would love for a warm up to occur instead.

BBC weather showing consistent 10/11C next week. I'm fine with this cold weather. What a stark contrast to last February, and the one before where we had 21.2C in London! This time last year the daffodils were out in their prime

  2. -8C tonight here in south Essex - probably coldest since 2018. Very rare to get those sort of tempreatures down here outside of the most rural areas, especially today. Lots of snow still out. The size of some icicles! I was initally worried when this started late last week the snow wouldn't settle - as it hadn't that day until mid morning. Turned out to be much better and prolonged than I expected.

  3. Bit late, but...

Was initally d issapointed yesterday as it snowed throughout the night, but cos it had been so wet before it didn't start settling until late morning./early afternoon.

A day later, its still snowing and has settled, probably most signfiicant snow event since 2018 or 2019.

Not quite the "beast from the east" though.

And here is the week's forecast. Multiple ice days, first time probably since 2018. -5/-6C on Wednesday! Coldest in a very long time. This forecast could be for a Eastern European city like Minsk or Warsaw, not southern Essex

On the negative side it does countinue to show the effects GW is having, with the whole of winter 15/16, Feburary 2017, Jan 2018, Dec 18, Feb 19, Dec 19 and Feb 20 all being well above average months un the country.

Obviously climate is different to weather, but its always ironic how whenever the Met Office say "snow will become a thing of the past", there is heavy snowfall both in Britain and europe.

  5. Understandably there is dissapointment today that many forecasted snow for areas turned out to be heavy rain - places just a few miles from me within the London area had no snow at all! Personally, I'm happy with what we got here in southern Essex - first signfiicant snow event since 2019, and it's probably not significant by northern standards, buty consdiering the only snow we got last year was a morning of snow/sleet which did not settle, i'm quite happy to see an inch or two of snow on the ground, and that nice crunching sound you get wearing boots as you walk through it. Hopefully we get more snow - this winter IMO is the best we've had since 2018, quite a lot of snow - and for europe as a whole, some places are ridiculously cold. Lows in Minsk, Belarus of -24C - a whole SIXTEEN DEGREES below average. eastern europe pretty cold, central spain very cold and snowy - snow in paris today too. Makes up for the absolutely, abysmal "winter" we had last year where cities like Berlin failed to record a single day where tempreatures reached freezing, and Moscow had to bring in fake snow for December.

  6. I know there's a whole host of reasons why, but its honestly ridiculous how a country as far North as us struggles to get decent accumulations of snow, if any in winter, and yet a country like Spain seems to be absolutely fine. Even in normal winters, Madrid is pretty cold (probably owing to its elevation)

Looks like this is already happening. No sub-zero days (maxima) since March 2018.

No decent snow event since March 2018 and no decent snow event in winter since 2012/2013.
Far fewer thunderstorms each year - only managed 5 days this year and two of those were distant and the other three were weak.

Climate just seems to becoming more constant with little variety and almost complete lack of 'interesting' events while periods of Atlantic dross just seem to be getting longer and longer.

Current cold spell is a joke. At Guildford there was no snow, as usual, and I have yet to record the first air-frost of the season. Tonight is another example of missing the frost by a small margin as temperature has dropped to a steady 1 deg.C. since 6 pm and will probably drop very little rest of night.

We've had plenty of frost,. ground and air here in essex, and snow in the north of the county. High of just 3C tommorow. We had no significant snowfall for about two years where I was. Honestly, the UK has never had truly "snowy" winters, I think we are allowing a few harsh winters in the 20th century to cloud our judgement. The UK has never had the cold winters of continental europe. This BBC article really isn't news. I'd still be much more concerned about a lack of snow in places where there should be lots, like greenland, the arctic etc.

  8. Very cold day here, I'm guessing it was around 4C max, though for some reason the weather channel has this weird phenonemon where it increases the maxima throughout the day despite other places staying at around 4/5C, it reckoned today had a high of 6/7C which is bullsh*t. It also said snow in the morning but I didn't see any. No snowm but quite a lot in north essex. However, monday is looking EXTREMELY cold - BBC and weather channel suggesting highs of 3C, but other forecasters have it as low as ONE with tempreatures remaining at freezing for most of the day. This cold is very, very early! These sort of tempreatures are still quite unusual in the middle of january and february, never mind early December.

  9. So today for example, the maxima for my area was forecast as 4C, by the Met Office, BBC, And the weather channel. But by the end of the day, the weather channel believes it has gone as high as 7C! It usually starts this really weird change around midday. Then you see it revised down to about 2-3C lower, in the past weather. Today it felt nothing like 6 or 7C, even with a wind chill. Has anyone else had experience with this odd phenomenon, and what weather app is the beat, especially when it comes to viewing past weather?
