  1. Cracking photos of last night’s Aurora everyone, sadly I missed it as the alarms didn’t go off on my phone. Doubt I’ll see anything here tonight but if alarms go off, I’m heading out west to Braemar in the hope of getting photos. Gie chilly under the Aberdeenshire Permagloom tho, weather station died at start of month so no idea what it’s feeling like out there.
  2. Happy New Year Kilties! It’s been a beautiful day here on Deeside, I suspect the skiers at Glenshee & Lecht will have revelled in it. No idea of maximum or minimum but the house has felt chilly. Sunset was gorgeous, especially when looking to the east.
  3. Sadly, my internet died earlier this week so my weather station isn’t transmitting. DD saw flakes of snow falling around an hour ago and tbh I was sceptical but sure enough, the ground and the cars were white. Let the dogs out just now and another light shower was falling so I guess that’s me on lamppost watch until the wee hours.
  4. Icy today on Deeside, finding out the hard way when I came crashing down to earth whilst leaving the house this morning. No time to nurse my bruised pride as I was meeting a friend for coffee but I wasn’t the only one to experience a slip and slide by all accounts. Currently -0.8c, DP -2.0c, not entirely sure what the daytime high was due to issues with my broadband but it felt very raw outdoors with something that felt like freezing rain falling late morning. Banchory is right on the edge of the weather warning so not holding out much hope of seeing anything from this particular event but will keep my fingers crossed.
  5. Merry Christmas to you all. It was a rather mild day on Deeside and a decent amount of sunshine too. The Christmas Eve overnight low was 7c, daytime high was 8.7c, then dropped through the dark hours to -2.1c before beginning to climb again to -0.8c currently. Not a single snowflake in sight here sadly but as the sun shone then I guess I'll forgive the weather gods.
  6. Overnight high of 5.6c, now down to 4.4c. The snow has got a fair scare on Deeside but still plenty of it around for now, it’ll be a different story by the time I get home from work this evening I expect. House is like an oven this morning which was unexpected, given I didn’t turn the heating settings up last week except for the odd boost as I was out most evenings at meetings. A return to typical cold December weather would be appreciated I’m watching everything posted here closely!
  7. Currently -5.4 in Banchory and dropping which will likely make for another interesting commute in the morning. Daughter travelling home for Christmas later today, planning to leave Bathgate between 3 and 4, what’s her chances of having a wet drive north rather than a snowy one? Looking at the charts you lot have already posted, am I right in thinking that by the time she hits Dundee she should have a pretty clear drive the rest of way north on A90?
  8. It feels much colder outdoors tonight than it’s done on any of the previous nights since this serious cold spell began. Currently -0.3°C, DP -1.5°C. Journeys both to and from work weren’t the nicest of experiences due to a fair bit of snow in the morning then drifting in the evening and a fair bit of rutted ice added in for good measure. Think I’m ready to stop for holidays now tbh so I can stay indoors and just watch the snow fall with a glass of mulled wine to warm me up
  9. Car took 30 minutes to defrost on the inside this morning before I could drive on account (I think) of me forgetting to put the wet windscreen cover on the car last night meaning there was too much moisture on the inside which then froze solid. The journey became quite interesting with drips landing on the dash or me every time I went over a pothole. Temperature started at -7 at the house then surprisingly lifted to -4 at the top of the Slug before steadily dropping as I went down the other side of the hill. PWS reports that my back garden rose to the heady heights of -3.6c for around an hour before dropping steadily to its current -7.5c. Looking forward to hearing what the overnight lows bottom out at.
  10. You really can't beat Deeside in her winter clothing on a blue sky day, I love where I live! My PWS currently reporting -4.7c with DP -5.5c. Side roads and pavements in Banchory are horrendous however, you can hear every car coming into or going out of my street thanks to the frozen slush. Upset the father of one of my neighbours this morning when he parked his car half across my drive and I asked him to move as I couldn't guarantee being able to avoid him with the ice. He wasn't amused but I no longer care as he's done it once to often now. Christmas has arrived in Banchory with the annual fire & rescue charity visit round the streets. The guys are out every night this week and I admire their bravery considering the forecast temperatures while raising money for the firemen's benevolent fund.
  11. Mix today of rain, sleet & snow, currently sleeting, 1.8C and DP 1.3C. Pavements were death traps when I was out earlier today, dreading what they'll be like in the morning.
  12. Survived the journey to work - chose the Slug road over the AWPR on account of every man and his dog seemingly stuck on it. It was a relatively easy journey even though there was a lot of lying snow. What snow there was this morning in Stonehaven has turned to mush with sleety stuff falling but am hopeful that the journey home after 5 will bring more snowy roads, especially on my side of the hill. Photo for effect from this morning.
  13. Took the dogs in from the garden at 6:45, ground had a covering and sky laden with snow but nothing falling. Went upstairs, looked out spare room window and it was dinging doon! Long may that continue. Currently 0.5°C up from overnight low of -1.2°C, DP currently -0.3°C. Heading away to get ready for work, may go AWPR rather than Slug road but will check Webcams first to see which option likely to be worst.
  14. Just had a search through the group posts as I hadn’t see one of my favourite contributors posting since I came back here after taking some time away over the fairer months and am saddened to read the news about @Puffy MacCloud from earlier this year. RIP David, I suspect your good humour will be missed in here for a long time to come.
  15. I know there’s been regular slow moving convoys heading north from Inverurie each evening Bein notified on Northsound’s travel reports. Not sure if that would be linked or not?
  16. Looking forward to seeing some flakes of the white stuff this week if the forecasts hold good.
  17. Evening all, the air was noticeably colder at lunchtime when I nipped across to the shop to pick up my lunch. Edited because I pushed post too early Looking forward to the colder weather that’s forecast even tho it means I’ll need to use my inhaler more (legacy of that damn virus). My weather station temperature graph looks worse than a Tour de France mountain stage altitude graph today.
  18. Beautiful, crisp start to the day on Deeside - PWS recorded -2.4c minimum around 8.10am this morning making our 5th negative overnight temperature since mid-October. Frost only just beginning to lift now although sensor still only showing 0c but clouds slowly working their way NE so it'll rise a bit quicker now, I expect.
  19. Apparently it’s moving again, one of my colleagues lives opposite the service station so been watching the goings on. Fire engine arrived around 11.30 to start pumping water away
  20. Hope everyone is staying safe and dry. Luckily I’m on a day off today as I was getting underfloor insulation sprayed but I have a friend who had to get into Aberdeen for a radiotherapy appointment who said A93 is bad. The only place I’m going this afternoon is Tesco to get groceries then it’s back to sit in my cozy house and ignore the rain battering off the front windows. Stats from my PSW say 51.05mm of rain fallen since midnight on top of at least 43.94mm yesterday but thanks to a blockage in early hours of yesterday which I didn’t notice until lunchtime, I don’t have the true rainfall figure for yesterday.
  21. Beautiful day on Deeside with wall to wall blue sky after waking to the lightest of sprinklings of snow showing on the cleared paths from yesterday. Overnight low of -0.8c, currently 4.9c. Local council installed solar panels on their remaining housing stock last year and the local Facebook group is reporting complaints of a new sort - folk leaving their houses and the closing of the door is enough to tempt the snow off their roof, narrowly missing them but apparently taking out tv aerials and satellite dishes on the way down. Now making calls for the council to install snow boards on their roofs. Some folk are never happy!
  22. What a cracking day of sna! I definitely picked the right day to be off work (booked it last November) except that the washing machine repair mannie, who was coming from Alford, called off due to getting stuck somewhere. Thankfully, I have enough woolly pullies to last me until the rescheduled visit on Monday Unlike others of the NE contingent, Banchory/Stonehaven has had next to no sna of any value this winter but I have had a fair few windscreen scrapes to contend with on my daily commute over the hill. That makes today’s weather even more enjoyable to me. Photos taken this morning at 9am, 10.30am and 12 noon for context and I can confirm that the dogs loved it. Daughter wasn’t impressed that Leith had missed out on this snowfall as if she’d been at her own flat near Bathgate, she’d have had plenty of it. @Ravelin I used to work in the community wing at your school but been away for 10 years now.
  23. Pishy sleety stuff here in Stonehaven since about 9.30 this morning, but was a dryish journey to the office, the roads on Banchory side of the hill being driest. According to the weather station closest to my office, it’s currently 3.2c and considerably more wet stuff has fallen than in my back garden at home.
  24. ‘Twas a nice start to the day but cloud is thickening and it’s beginning to look like we’ll have showers of something this afternoon. Currently 3.3c and much less windy than it was last night. On the up side, I’ll get back to my office desk tomorrow as DS got a negative result on his pcr and my lateral flow was also negative this morning. Life is much easier when you have instant access to printers, scanners etc. No doubt it’ll be an interesting drive over the Slug road in the morning however.
