Storms and Convective discussion - September 2023
Colin_P replied to Supacell's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
I'm a little South of Chesterfield and have been watching the lightning that is currently over or near to Thorn / Crowle / Belton and skirting Scunthorpe. Just under 40 miles away according to Google Earth. Amazing. @ChezWeather -

I know nothing but have just watched the 6 o'clock BBC1 national forecast. They showed a strong convergence line, and highlighted it spanning a lot of England with potential heavy rain and thunder storms. They also mentioned that the odd funnel cloud might be seen. Calling out to the boffins on here... Any truth to this? (The BBC website forecast as of now 18:50 is 2hrs old and doesn't mention this) -

Where are you sat? I'm not far away from Chez in North Wingfield. I've been watching it roll in for about forty minutes out Matlock direction and South over Derby direction. I'm not sure that we will score a direct overpass, but the light show is fantastic along with the distant rumbles and booming. -

Indeed, I seem to be right in line. It has gone very dark and I am waiting for the heavens to open. Looks like it could be a proper weather event (in this day and age where nothing seems to happen) -
The heat continues and I continue to hate it !

Feels a bit cooler in here. Absolutely disgustingly stinking hot elsewhere.

Just down the hill from you. This is the storm that just keeps on giving, lightning is far less frequent than round 1 though. Round 2 here but I'd say rather than overhead it is probably 1/2 way between Maidenhead and Wycombe. -

Your wording was fine. I could have taken some footage but being new to the site don't know to post it. -

No, too late now, but would ask (new to this site) if you have to use an image / video hosting site or can you directly upload here? -

Maidenhead here, I've never known anything like it. Multiple flashes, sometimes 3+ per second. Constant and I mean constant thunder now for about 30 minutes. -

Maidenhead, now. Proper proper storm overhead, insane rain, lovely and cool ! -

That came over the top of us here in Maidenhead about an hour ago. Moderate thunder which oddly didn't show up on blitzorg. But it did deliver a gutter overwhelming quantity of rain, it was lovely. Sadly looks like it is fading now. -

Farnborough / Camberly area now on the radar. Looking South from here it is certainly bubbling up. -

Hello all, I'm brand new here and had no idea where to post my first post, so I chose this thread! Thank you for letting me join. I have a lot to learn about the science but have always been an avid observer of the weather and this recent spell has led me here and compelled me to join. I am located in Maidenhead in the Thames Valley, which is about 12 miles West of Heathrow and I swear if there was an official weather station here it would up there! It has been obscenely hot here for the last week or so with no respite, hardly any cloud, little to no rain and certainly no thunder. An important question; The 'cone of silence' and the triangle (or something, something of something) where no storms happen, where are they and what areas do they cover? I don't think I'm located in it/them as I've heard some thunder this year. I've currently only got a basic digital max/min (shaded) thermometer so will be reading up on possibly getting some better kit. The very basic weather stats for me so far this year are: Max 38.8c Min -1.2c And sat here now typing this 29.9c (at 10:19am on 11/08/20) Probably a bit of a micro climate thing going on in the garden! When will the furnace be switched off.......
