  1.  LetItSnow! Yes, we're in unchartered territory atm.. warm records falling like flies. I've noticed this sudden change ever since September 2021, it's almost like we're in an endless wave of warmth that refuses to stop . Perhaps it's the warm SSTs, or solar maximum.  We've had cold spells since then, most notably December 2022. But an actual cooler period longer than a month of even average temperatures has been hard to come by. I'd say Dec 2020 - May 2021 was the last time we saw a protracted cold period, and before that in 2013. Maybe we'll have to wait even longer for another period of below average temperatures.

Still warm but sub 16C and similar to summers to summers like 1950, 1960 and 1970 (strange pattern).

You can throw Summer 1940 in the mix too, with CET's 16.4, 15.1, 15.6. Averaging 15.7C

As you say, quite an unusual pattern in the mid 20th century.

  3. This May definitely has June vibes to it, almost like someone flicked the switch from winter to summer. A few days before May started it was as cold as some days in winter. What fascinates me is the mild nights, something uncommon in early May. As @Scorcher eluded to, warmth in May is usually tempered with cooler nights. May 2018 and 2020 a good example. I guess this month is a warmer May 2022.

  4.  Derecho Honestly I'm not surprised, we've seen exceptional warmth in the last 18 months and this month certainly isn't holding back. In the last year we've had June, September and February come in record breaking status.. that's not to say the other months were cool, October, December and March were also very mild. This year is certainly looking like a record breaking one, unless the summer and autumn is cool which is quite unlikely. Just wondering when a shift to a cooler regime will take place, it has to break at some point.

  5. The warmth hasn't been too bad, actually quite enjoying a few days of unbroken sunshine. However, I'm not enjoying the mild nights. If the minima were in the mid to high single digits, it'd be much more palatable.

That said it's nothing compared to those exceptionally warm nights we saw in July 2022.. the year that made me invest in a portable AC.
