  1. I think you’re right, it’s the breathability (although the rating is the same - 5000mm). Tried it again yesterday, rain was lighter but persistent & it was inside that was dampest. It’s a down coat which I think is just too warm (). I am going to put it through the wash though with some waterproofing stuff, but not til I get the heating fixed. Thanks for the advice
  2. Well I’m not sure about whole years but for a winter my best memory is of 1979. I’m basing my dating on my Mum’s anecdotal evidence only. I just remember lots of thick snow to play in. Maybe not the most extreme winter but when you only have to stay off school & play in it, it was all good. I’m not so keen on subsequent winters (e.g. 2010) which had heavy snow, as an adult, when I had to get to work….not so fun. The snow of 1979 led to us building an igloo in the garden - I was very proud of it! Me & my sis Feb/March 1979 (I could stand corrected if need be…) For a summer it has to be this year, 2022. Absolutely loved the dry heat & high temperatures
  3. Wet & wild out there today. At 7c it belies the coldness of that wind, which is severe on the exposed hills - my face hurts! The full face balaclava I bought a few years ago is looking decidedly more attractive Oh, on a side note, came face to face with a stoat yesterday which is very rare! Knew something was there when one of the dogs tried sniffing it out and pouncing about in the grass (he never catches anything), then the stoat jumped out of the grass & up the hawthorn hedge, leaving a right stench scent, presumably to scare us off. My god, it was worse than fox scent!
  4. These houses look like a model/toy town, so surreal! Fortunately no fatalities from this scenario. Watched ‘A Day After Tomorrow’ film last night (yes, again) - & we thought it was fictional! Can’t see a credit for who took the drone footage in the article & it doesn’t appear on Nates Dronography page so not sure….. Canada: drone footage shows row of lakefront houses frozen over – video | World news | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Parts of Canada have declared a state of emergency as record temperatures freeze over entire houses
  5. Well I mis-timed my dog walk this morning as the rain arrived an hour earlier than expected. Still, not to be deterred I donned my new waterproof winter coat I got for Christmas . A lovely walk around the fields with deer crossing my path, buzzards low flying as they branch hop each time I get closer & a woodcock seen too. Rain was moderately heavy, a muddy walk but enjoyable. HOWEVER, was I dry on my return in my waterproof coat? Was I hell . Something says waterproof to 5000mm means it should withstand moderate rain. I was only out for an hour. If you buy from a supposedly ‘specialist’ company you should expect better. Ok Mountain Warehouse isn’t top end but with the word ‘mountain’ in the name I should be able to buy something I can go up a mountain in extreme weather & stay warm & dry. I’m only walking up a chalk mound (I.e. wolds) in mild (6.6c) & moderate conditions! What is wrong with the design world nowadays? Can no one do a job right anymore? Anyway, good morning/afternoon everyone
  6. I’d just like to amend my definition of this morning’s frost……’moderate’ frost is more appropriate! Once I got out to the car, which was quite frozen, driven up the hill with the abs kicking off a couple of times (some black ice spots) & then walked along the farm track through the iced up puddles resembling slush puppies I think ‘light’ frost just didn’t cover it . Did anyone else always want a Mr Frosty slush machine for Christmas & never get one? ️
  7. We didn’t appear to get any of that band of rain/sleet/snow potential of last night. Skies were incredibly clear here and looks like it was all spent on the moors before it could reach us (Dad will be happy this morning ). We do have a light frost on the grass, low of 1c overnight & currently 1.1c. Skies still clear as a bell. Happy Boxing Day everyone .
  8. Think I’ve just been one of those people you’re moaning about!!! Too rough to help with anything, hair of the dog just hasn’t done it today ….however I managed to get my Dad to take us all home when I told him of the risk of snow overnight….he absolutely hates driving in snow & he was keen as mustard to get going (any potential snow is hours away from down here & we’re only a 10 min drive from home…he likes to make it in good time). (not that I really expect it to snow but it’s a fab excuse to leave the family to their own devices)
  9. The Yorkshire Wolds at their best this morning, gently rolling hills & big clear skies (almost). It’s a lovely Christmas Eve so far at 6c, very still and plenty of sun.
  10. Standing on my kitchen step with a cup of tea, watching the sky ablaze…..is there anything better on this winter’s morn? However, on the other side of reality…..I’m watching the unicorns at Stonehenge! I swear I’m awake, I think
  11. On a positive note….Happy Winter Solstice everyone, just watching the sunrise after the longest night….feeling hopeful for the return of the sun and a new year

  13. After 11 days of snow & ice it’s a real relief for it to be gone. As others have said, it’s tiring travelling & living with snow, clearing paths/drives, salting, building fires, cleaning fires, restocking fuel, extra time for driving, trudging thro snow for dog walking, trying to defrost the garden pond (absolutely impossible, I suspect the frogs may be dead ), the list goes on….. Good to have a rest from it all for a while
  14. Wow, 10.5c this morning and woken to a scenery of green once more. Last night was still a whiteout but 99% of the snow & ice has gone overnight! After 11 days of ice it’s a genuine relief! The garden pond is still frozen solid….
  15. Reflection of the day….. This year I believe we’ve seen more spectacular (red) sunrises and sunsets than ever before. Discuss…. Is it because I’m taking more notice since being on the weather forum? I think not. Our skies seem to be clearer first thing and last thing of the day. Certainly in summer, when we had poor days/rain the evenings always cleared and how many times have we said ‘best part of the day’ of an evening?? Is there an atmospheric reason for this do we think? Have we had generally lower cloud cover (in this area) overall?? And still they continue throughout winter….(not my pic - shared by friend)
  16. Been down to North Lincs today, virtually nothing! In fact from Driffield onwards there’s hardly any ground snow left & as you say @MIKE LEVITTnothing on the west side of Hull. Although we’ve had quite a thaw on my return home it’s still winter wonderland up on the hills as far as the eye can see. Sorry, I just can’t help myself….
  17. The hardened snow is no fun to walk on! On the thicker stuff in the fields there’s a second delay when you put your foot down & then crunch through the ice crust…..it’s like falling through ice with every step! Certainly no snow clouds on the horizon today….. A glimpse of some iridescence in the sky tho….
