Update: Another day into the inferno... Honestly speaking, today isn't as bad as yesterday. The humidity yesterday was unbearable. Especially during the night... There was no breeze.
Today is similar with a very light breeze making it less unbearable. The temperature in places is much warmer though. So... I guess we will see what tomorrow brings. I just hope tonight is cold.

[Edit:] As the day progresses forwards... I'm starting to think that it's warmer than I thought. The breeze is not great. Yesterday was worse but today is just similar... ugh....

Yesterday's humidity gave me a headache and nausea, today is a little less humid but the breeze has died since earlier so even that relief has gone.  Only comfort is the time of year being what it is it's bound to cool down sooner or later.

  2. Well it's certainly a big 180 from the GFS for next weekend.  Although next Friday still looks very warm the weekend is much cooler, with the heat staying away into the week after.  I've got a feeling we're not totally out of the woods yet but if the latest GFS run is anywhere near verifying we should survive the rest of August.

Completely agree with you! It's amazing the amount of sh**posting that we're having to put up with right now, I guess it must be the frustration of the heat-lovers who are peeved because they haven't had endless days of +30c.

And the thing is I know there's a Poor Summer Haters' thread on the forum, and I haven't even visited it once.  I'm not going to go and tell them they're wrong for hating cooler weather in summer, I'm not going to try and demonstrate to them the virtues of drizzle or the benefits of rain in summer so why can't heat lovers show us the same courtesy?  It's baffling.

Time to either open your windows, buy a decent fan, or invest in air conditioning. Seeing as you complain a lot about hot weather, which of these things are you doing? Have you taken cool/cold showers? Sat with your feet in cold water? Slept under just a sheet or on top of the bed? Plenty of things you could do to mitigate a warm home.

Not really the same is it?  Unless you have aircon none of the other steps you mentioned reduce the air temperature.  It's not like in winter where you can turn the heat up if it's too cold is it?

  5. Well, look on the bright side - it's August, which means shorter days, and the Sun won't be as high in the sky so it might not feel quite as bad in direct sunlight as earlier in the summer.  But it's not ideal whichever way you look at it.

Fingers crossed it's only a brief heatwave.

  6. It's still humid out there even though temps aren't especially high.  This summer is turning out to be really draining, since even when the temperature isn't high the feel is still a muggy one.  I'm not sure if that's because of the higher than average SSTs in the North Atlantic or me becoming even more sensitive to the heat than before, but it's still unpleasant.  I can't wait for autumn!

  7. Welcome as this weather is (for us at least) what we need to realise is this is normal British summer weather, and that includes the upcoming plume and following thundery breakdown.  What has happened in recent summers is the aberration, not what we're having at the moment.  Heat-lovers have been spoiled in recent summers.

Thing is though in the UK we don’t get 30C overcast days.

However today is a nothing summers day.  100% overcast, cool with max temps comfortably below 20C making too cold for the beach or generally sitting around outside, Too many days like this in the rest of the year.

I remember 30C days that were overcast.  One day sticks out, it was in August 1997 I think, with a very muggy 30C with cloudy skies and even a few spots of drizzle/light rain.  I rmemeber that month very well as an almost tropical feeling one, in sharp contrast to August 1995.

    So far it's:

    I WOULD RATHER HAVE 25C THAN 17C = 100%

    I WOULD RATHER HAVE 17C THAN 25C = 0%

Not that there is any bias or anything.

I must be one of that 0% then...

FWIW this has been a great spell of weather.  Useable, good for sleeping, dry at times but with a bit of rain too.  I just wish it could be like this for the next few weeks!

Yes, I can't believe people are giving up on summer already when we just had the warmest June on record and we still have July, August and the first half of September (which is often an extension of summer these days) to go yet. There is so much pessimism in this thread.

Some of us are enjoying this less warm weather and appreciate the lower temperatures and more comfortbale feel.

Another good set of runs this morning for those of us who don't like it hot 🙂

Our luck's going to run out eventually but I'm determined to make the most of this weather while it lasts.  I'll do some weeding in the back garden later and probabl give the front lawn a trim too.  Get some work done while the weather's useable.

  12. The media's coverage of the weather in this country is atrocious at times.  The Met Office have been trying their best to counter hysterical reports of "five more heatwaves this summer" across various outlets but they seem to be a lone voice of reason in a sea of hype.

Met Office moves swiftly to debunk reports of 'five more UK heatwaves' this summer

    Some of the worst culprits:

Met Office predicts scorching 40C heatwave for July

EXCLUSIVE: 14-day heatwave to hit Britain as dates temperatures to soar over 40C revealed

Scorching two-week heatwave to hit UK as temperatures 'set to soar to 40C'

No doubt they're all trying to out-do the mad thread for summer weather hype.
